hockeygrl
I recently got this message from a member of the Sioux Hockey group on Yahoo! I thought someone on this board would be able to help considering that you are all avid Sioux hockey followers and probably know a lot more about the history of the team than I do. Sadly, I have only been an avid fan for a little more than six years. The gentleman writes.... "I'm an avid genealogist and discovering a distant relative who played for UND briefly, a goalie out of Grand Forks. His parents were Joseph Borovsky and Martha Nienas (I'm related by marriage to the Nienas) Bill was 20 when he was killed in a car crash Oct 2, 1956. Reading the newspaper articles about it it sounds like it was alcohol related, the truck driver hit Bill while he was stopped at a train crossing and pushed him into the train, and they said the cab of the truck was full of beer bottles. What a waste, a young man like that. And back in those days, I doubt there was ever any criminal charges against this killer. Anyway, I have picture of JJ and Martha but would love to have a picture of Bill, especially if there's one in his hockey gear for the Sioux." Anyone have any ideas on where I could locate old photos? Maybe the Grand Forks Public Library? Your help would be much appreciated. Thank You! ~Lisa~
SiouxMD
The public library is a good place to start. You might also consider contacting the UND Alumni Association - (Contact Information). Found this on google... Golden Feather Club The main responsibility of the Golden Feather Club was selecting the University's cheerleading squads, but the club also performed many other activities, including: buying new cheerleading uniforms, presenting a $150 baseball scholarship, awarding the Bill Borovsky Memorial Trophy to the most valuable goalie in the Western Intercollegiate Hockey League (now the WCHA), organizing pep rallies, and routinely traveling to Fargo for basketball games and Minnesota for hockey games. In 1956 the Feathers split the cheerleading squads into freshmen and varsity teams. The club is also credited with creating the "Sammy the Sioux" mascot. The Feathers also organized the King Kold Karnival in 1968.
siouxfan499
Another idea would be to contact either Sandy Slater or Curt Hanson at the Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special Collections at the Chester Fritz Library on the UND campus. Maybe they could dig something up for ya! Hopefully they can. Good Luck!
