star2city
The following quotes, from the Aberdeen News-American, on the cablecast of UND sports over the Mid-Continent Cable system are quite enlightening, especially considering the South Dakota interview source and the candid answers of the MidContinent executive. Why UND? Why are University of North Dakota sporting events carried over Midcontinent cable channel 23? "UND has the longest-running (NCAA) Division I sports program in our region," Simmons said. When the Ralph Englestad Arena was built in Grand Forks, representatives of the arena "came to us and offered us an opportunity to distribute that sports programming across our network," Simmons said. The arrangement is a partnership between the arena, UND, Grand Forks TV station WDAZ and Midcontinent, Simmons said. No money changes hands in the agreement, he said. As a result of the arrangement, UND gains exposure for its athletic programs and Midcontinent acquired a "very tasty piece of sports programming," Simmons said. UND sports, particularly hockey, is "a greatly desired piece of programming, especially in North Dakota. And we've had really good comments from our subscribers in South Dakota as well," Simmons said.
