Newberry seeks tribal approval

Newberry College, formerly the Indians, is exploring tribal approval for a possible name change to "Newberry Cherokee Indians" (following the route trailblazed by former Catawba College Indians who, with tribal approval, became "Catawba College Catawba Indians"). See link to press release below. I have not found any progress report.

FWLIW, I love this solution, and I loved it long before you got into that agreement.

IMHO (and I'm no lawyer) it is one way

of the agreement while staying within its terms. Get one tribe to say "sure, go ahead and call yourselves "xxxx Sioux" and we'll sign on for five or ten years". With that, you've changed your nickname; something can be worked out on a "new" logo and viola! Everybody who is
