I don’t want to hijack this thread so would it be alright Old School Guy for me to message you a question on a possible scenario?

I won’t debate or argue I would just be interested in your take on it.

Sure thing...message me and I'll answer. I'm bouncing back and forth doing yard work and sneaking a peak at basketball on TV.. I'll respond without argument or debate.

In my opinion, the most overlooked benefits are the experiences and lesson learned.

Your statement is on point! I agree with the vast majority of your post and your on target on many points, but this statement is what being a college student/and or athlete is all about. Being a college athlete has an expiration date. But the outcomes of decisions, experiences, lessons learned last a lifetime. Choosing where to attend school is one the most important decision a young man or young lady will make in their life at age 17 or 18. Its huge. So I don't have an issue with a kid transferring in or out to maximize their college experience.

Are there Any changes in the current transfer rules you would like to see

I think the rules have to be tightened up some but don’t have any specifics

    thanks

I don't personally like a kid that transfers has to sit out or transfer down in class. I think players should be able to transfer without penalty, if coaches can do the same. I just take issue with people complaining of kids transferring out, but we don't complain if a kid wants to transfer in. I will say, a kid should not be permitted to transfer within the same conference.

Not sure where you got the idea that schools can’t lower a scholarship based on performance. Schools can give scholarships to walk-ons, raise scholarships, lower scholarships, or remove scholarships all based on how well the athlete has or hasn’t performed. Schools should not cut scholarships for athletes because of career ending injuries. ( when I signed my NLI I was told that but I made sure by adding it to the NLI before I signed it).

Injuries and performance are generally treated the same, but that is why I said suppose to. If a coach wants to reduce your scholarship, they will use other reasons like conduct or academics to justify it. If you are stater and slip to #2 or #3 on the depth chart because the next guy outplays you and is bumped up, that is not grounds for scholarship reduction. A coach can decide not to renew your scholarship for performance the following year.

One possibility for entering the portal is lack of a player’s scholarship amount not progressing as initially thought or part of your scholarship being taken away.

I understand this can happen for disciplinary reasons or the student athlete has not progressed as originally thought but can’t it also happen if money is needed secure a specific athlete ?

The answer to your question is yes. Yes and yes. Happens all the time. However, a school is not suppose to lower the scholarship amount solely based on field performance.

Imagine if Tom Brady had left Michigan because his coach was platooning him with the golden boy Drew Henson. At the end of the day quitters quit.

Transferring to another school that gives a kid a chance to continue playing ball in a program that may give him a chance to play or play more is not the same as quitting. A kid that rides the bench or doesn't get to see the field at one school that finds a different opportunity is not a quitter. IMO if they are still playing and pursuing their goals in the the game of football they are just taking their talent and goals elsewhere. Happens in corporate America everyday. UND has actively asked kids to transfer in recent years or told them they would not see much time so they should look at transferring. That's a fact. Are those kids also quitters?  Jalen Hurts left Bama, went to OU. Now he's in the NFL. Is he a quitter?

My new normal is not giving a crap anymore.  College football is being ruined right in front of us.  Paying players, transfer portals, social justice crap, Covid protocols, can't hit anyone hard.  It's a tragedy of piss poor leadership.

I'm sorry you feel this way. All the things mentioned, are intended to recognize the student athletes as young men who are being empowered to make critical life decisions, while building leadership skills on an off the filed while embracing the whole person concept that is both aware of self and community responsibility. Recognizing the need for community and player safety is a good thing. A player transferring creates an opportunity for someone that wants to be in Grand Forks. If we get kids with all the attributes mentioned and he helps win games. Its a win-win.

The new uniforms are ugly.  The very best college football program period, wears the same uniforms they have been wearing for decades.

Oklahoma and Ohio State have multiple combos. The are top tier programs.

  9. I'm not saying a recruit goes home and makes his final decision on uniforms but kids want to look good and cool. Which is subjective. Old school and throwback uniforms are nice too. Alternate colors and uniforms is part of the game. Oklahoma does it too.

They don't. Not at this level.  It means nothing. Nobody is choosing UXD or XDSU because of uniform combos.

So with all of NDSU football successes in recent memory, why do they trot out multiple uniform combos? I agree some schools don't have to do it like Bama and Ohio State. But UND is not in that category.

    Uniforms are ok

    Fumbles are not ok

Multiple uniform combos help marketing and recruiting. It shows that money is being pumped into the program and there is progressive attitude in coaching philosophy. Today's young athletes like that. It also signals a new era being prominent in the Missouri Valley Conference. All are positives.

  12. The coaches need to emphasize to the DBs:  be physical with receivers and don't let them step on your toes and get to your body. Swing down on the wrist of the guy trying to block you by grabbing breast plate of your shoulder pads. There is no muscle on top of your wrists and a closed fist to that area is painful. The person holding you will let go immediately. Bottom line is to be physical before they get physical with you. I think our guys will run roughshod over Drake and get back in the win column

Gotta force him back inside where there is help

If our guy had outside leverage. Yes. Use the sideline as an extra defender and force him out of bounds or make him cut inside where the help is. We neither got outside leverage or attacked him at the sideline.  #13 said bye.  race me to the goal line.  Lesson learned.

Watching that one long TD again in slow motion tonight, the blocking wide receiver definitely had a big time hold of Siegal and totally pulled him back inside. The first screenshot attached Siegal is set to break out towards out of bounds hashmark to make the tackle, but the defender totally pulls him back inside. In the second screen shot you can see the defender is all of the sudden on the outside, there is no way he could get back to that outside angle without grabbing Siegal and pulling him back in. It looks like Coley takes a super dumb angle to cut up inside. But I can see why he did that because in his mind Siegal was about to break out towards the out of bounds area to make the tackle so Coley cut under in case the WR cut under. However the blocking WR totally held up Siegal and left the sideline completely open. Our guys were in the right spot and that would have been a 5 yard gain without the severe holding

Yes, there was holding on that play...there is holding on just about every play in a football. Game #10 goes about 6' 6" and he smothered our DB, which means the unblocked defender has to make that play. He didn't. Gotta tip your hat to #13...kid has wheels and knows how to use them.

  15. One more note: if you take away the FBS top-10, the talent gap between FBS and FCS is shrinking fast. The difference is depth and belief. Once FCS teams get more depth and start believing they are supposed to win...its game on. Ask Jacksonville State.

  16. I was impressed with UND football against Utah State. The offense was imaginative and the defense was active. I think the altitude played a key role late in the game. If UND plays like that the rest of the way, I see a national top-4 finish for sure.

Latest update on Hunter from his mom.

Day seven, Jan. 3, 2019 update:

“I can’t wait to get back to work,” Hunter said today. He sat in his wheelchair and rolled it down the hallway with the PT and OT staff. It wore him out but the progress we’ve seen in the past few days in miraculous and we’re praying for more miracles.

This is the new normal. We won’t sugarcoat it. It’s painful, grueling and we celebrate each day’s “wins.” We also need to understand the “rules” of the new game we’re playing. Hunter is an athlete and a competitor. When we were told yesterday Hunter’s spinal cord injury is the most severe as measured by the ASIA (American Spinal Injury Assn.) test we also learned the percentage of people who walk again with a complete or total spinal cord injury is two percent. Hunter said “Wow! That’s so much better than I thought it would be. I’ve been in the two percent category before.” He went on to explain going to be a Division I athlete when coming from a class of 18 students, playing Class B nine-man football and other life experiences that built his character.

In the category of little wins, today Hunter was given a bigger and longer hospital bed which for his large frame was much awaited and “is so awesome.” We are surrounded by an incredible medical staff and I will share more about them soon but we know this is where Hunter was meant to be cared for at this time.

In the category of big wins, late this afternoon we were verbally told we have insurance APPROVAL and medical clearance to transport Hunter to Craig Hospital in the Denver area early next week to begin his rehabilitation. From where we were a week ago, this is a BIG praise.

This has been the most grueling week of our lives and yet the most hope-filled. One week ago today, Hunter’s life and the lives of all who are connected to him changed as a result of a skiing accident. Hunter did not lose consciousness. He clearly remembers the accident on “an easy blue run” as he says and we look at the dent on his ski helmet every day with thankfulness.

For anyone who has experienced trauma, tragedy, and adversity, you know the survival mode you enter to get through each and every moment. We’ve been carried by your immense prayers, care, and love. We can only explain this outreach as a greater purpose and calling. God's got this. Hunter is alive. He does not have a brain injury. He has his mind, voice, use of his arms and hands and will work hard to accomplish new goals he has set for himself.

Hunter’s path is not one we could see or know. He’s shared last year the UND Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) theme was “Why me? Why not me.” We believe he has been prepared for this journey as best he can. Is there a lot of emotion? Severe pain, adversity, and unknowns? Yes. God is building a greater story from this experience, not only for Hunter but for thousands joining us in prayer. As a dear friend shared very early on last weekend with us, "more people will go to heaven from this experience." Hunter is absolutely more faithful in his outlook right now than Nathan or I am. His complete trust has strengthened our faith just in the past week.

Keep praying please, anytime, anywhere. God listens and comforts. Prayers are needed as it’s a lot to process and persevere through and continues to be a traumatic situation. We also see many around us in this hospital in need of prayers. You have those same types of people hurting and broken around you. Let's love on them, pray for them and fill them with hope as we have been this past week and will continue to be uplifted.

    Specific prayer requests:

For Hunter’s continued medical stability and mental and physical strength building each day

For Hunter and fellow spinal cord injury patient Todd to get to Craig Hospital next week and get settled into their new hospital rooms and begin their rehab regimen

For all of the insurance approvals and housing needs Nathan and I are working to get done at Craig Hospital can be finalized on Monday

For our daughters and our entire family to continue to be supported and loved on a little extra during this time. Our daughters (ages 10 and 12) are experiencing this far away from us and we’re so grateful for those rallying around them. We miss them terribly and love seeing them on FaceTime daily.

Thank you. Your support is unwavering. Nathan and I talked together about how people have filled all the gaps in our life over the past week and are helping us find a path forward in our new normal. It impacts almost all aspects of our daily life. This network has filled all the needs we had and so much more. We will forever be grateful. #pinkestrong

Continued prayers and hope for Hunter. The UND community is with you and your family.

Name one player who came in under an ideal weight who left smaller.

I'm not going to let you bait me into calling out players by name on this forum because I'm more respectful than that. Plus, I'm not trying to indict student athletes that play for UND. My critique is of the S&C program. But I can name a minimum of few players that came in at a borderline ideal weight and when they left 3-4 years later, had not developed the requisite muscle mass that leads to being an explosive college football player. I've stood right next to kids as freshmen and as seniors and the eye test says the UND strength and conditioning program failed these kids. Players should come in with a high school body and leave with a D-1 football body. That hasn't been the norm the past few years.

  19. 29 minutes ago, Midwestern Hawk said:

I’m beating a dead horse too, but FCS football is about development.  I’m not seeing guys getting massively bigger, faster stronger.

I agree with you 1000% Player development and S&C is lacking at UND. I'd argue I've seen players leave smaller unless they are a gym rat on their own.
