I was there in 2012 (union, ferris, bc, gophers) and someone gave me their tickets to try to sell for them. I couldn't give them away! Scalpers wouldn't even buy them because they couldn't sell the tickets they had.
I am going to Tampa again (regardless if UND made it or not). Going empty handed again. Not really worried. 18,000+ seat arena.

2012 in Tampa the early game was union/ferris and minnesota/BC was late game, but that's for obvious tv reasons. No one cared about the first one.

I agree. I just feel if they want the most viewers 8:30 east coast is too late on a Thursday, when it could be BC vs. Quin/Lowell. 5 pm is more reasonable, then 7:30 central for UND vs. Denver/Ferris.

When I meet people who are unfamiliar with UND athletics, specifically hockey, I try to explain it to them to imagine a passion like Green Bay Packers. That they have a very successful history, are from a small town with no (other) professional sports. This is THE event in town. This is the talk of the town. Therefore fans have spread throughout the US/World, so that no matter where the team is playing, you will find fans there in large numbers.
With this history, then I try to explain what the name/logo meant to the fans. I equate it with the name "Packers" and the "cheesehead". There are unique, one of a kind. You see it, and you know exactly which team it's for. There is nothing else like it in all of sports. There might be attempt to duplicate, but everyone knows what the original is. (The only difference I'd say is I think many people think the cheesehead is dumb, whereas I believe the Sioux logo was voted as the best in college hockey)
Usually that helps people to understand the passion of the fan base. Now I'll spin it. Let's say they told the Packers they no longer could be the Packers, and also could no longer wear Cheeseheads. And so they renamed their team with something that is not very unique at all. We know it wouldn't matter which name they picked, it would not be well received, and they definitely would want to stay unique in the rest of anything that will identify them (logo, etc.)
I am not as familiar with Nebraska or Notre Dame college football, but I expect there are some similarities there too.
So the GB Packers are best example I can use to describe the passion for UND sports, specifically UND hockey -- and the uphill battle on a new nickname and logo. Therefore, I recommend not looking over that aspect during the process.
These passionate fans are not only going to want as much of the old as they can in the new, but also something that stays very unique and is one of a kind. That's why other poster(s) have already mentioned using Hawk to be a Tomahawk or Airplane/Jet. People don't want to be unique. Then other poster(s) have suggested if it has to be a bird, make it unique, classy, not a cartoon for kids. People want to be full of pride in defending this logo. And it's going to take a strong logo to get people to convert away from the past.
Many people would rather just be "North Dakota" then have a new name/logo. Probably no different than if Packers was taken away, people would just assume be "Green Bay" then be something else. It's going to be an uphill battle with regards to public relations, but people will come around when they see something special - and something safe, or a duplicate of everything else out there.

I hadn't heard that per se, but I can think of another reason why I don't want that as a nickname. Plenty of other fan bases would love to change it so it means "Missing male anatomy" if you catch my drift.
Yeah, same reason I'm surprised that flickertails is still an option. I can see the signs already with the space between "L" and "I" reduced just a bit more than the others.

Are you saying unique to colleges, or unique period? I would bet that it isn't totally unique, and if it is, I would guess that it won't be inspiring or representative of the state. Badlanders is unique, but would people deem it inspiring?
The Nickname Committee will evaluate nickname suggestions based on a list of previously suggested attributes, including:
- Be unique, recognizable, inspiring, and distinctly UND’s.
- Promote a sense of pride, strength, fierceness, and passion.
- Be representative of the state and region in a way that honors the traditions and heritage of the past but also looks to the future.
- Be a unifying and rallying symbol.
I would expect at least unique to college nicknames so that it is "distinctly UND's". I was simply stating there is another college nickname that uses Rough Riders, which might fail #1 above.

For those suggesting Rough Riders, just a head's up that it is not unique. It is currently used by a community college in Arizona. I truly believe the committee will only consider unique names.

Taking into account it must be unique, represent the college and the area, I submitted:
Airmen - thought this was a name that could work out, especially when I read the Air Force's Airman's Creed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airman%27s_Creed I think this would be quite fitting of what we want UND sports to represent.
Aeronauts - a very unique name. I prefer Airmen much more, but was trying to find another name for "pilot" that was unique among college nicknames as Flyers is already taken. I also like Aviators, but prefer these names.

Do you have to pick them up at Scheels Arena, or from St. Cloud?
I know a UND fan who lives down by St. Cloud and called Monday to inquire about tickets (didn't pretend they were alum however did purchase st. cloud tickets this year to the UND game so their info was already in the system). They were told season ticket holders and corporate sponsors get first crack at tickets, but if anything is left on Tuesday they'll make them available to the general public. Being general public their name was taken down and they were told they'll get a call Tuesday if anything is left. Sure enough they got a call today. However, they told me St. Cloud had a requirement donation that was needed before they would let them buy tickets - which they were fine doing.
They said tickets have to be picked up by Thursday in St. Cloud otherwise they will be at Will Call in Fargo.

Just for S&G's, I pretending I had tickets to sell on StubHub, just to see past sales (and then stop before I list them). Today someone bought 6 seats together for $765.75 per ticket! That's $4,600 to attend! I like my hockey almost as much as the next guy, but how can anyone justify that?
FYI: On StubHub, the median price for sold all-session tickets are $380/seat.

Just a side note for anyone who doesn't currently have the ESPN family of channels, or has recently cut cable.
SlingTV has a 7-day trial, and they carry ESPNU as well as ESPN and ESPN2. It can likely be watched on any internet-enabled device (phone, laptop, smart TV, Roku, etc.).
I only post this as if I can't get tickets to Fargo, I plan on a 7-day trial so I can watch on my Roku at home.
