  1. Is this the first recruit we have pulled from the central league? I honestly cannot remember the last college player coming from this league.

    Wow.

You might want to look at national champs' roster from last year.

Check out current #4 Colgate's lineup.

How about your own team's 2013-2014 players?

  2. Yes I am very excited about this weekend. I think we have the potential to get a sweep if we play like we know how.

Sweep highly unlikely, split will be tough. Should be a great series. Duluth has outshot UND four games in a row, all at the Ralph. Some very good goaltending allowed UND to go 2-1-1 in those games; two went to overtime. Not counting an empty net goal, UMD outscored UND 15-13. Duluth has some really good forwards, many that return next year.

  3. Brittain is a solid goalie playing on a team that defends well in prime scoring areas. His play is not nearly as strong as Scrivens' college performance. Never mind his recent record-setting performance, Scrivens worked hard to keep improving with the Marlies in the AHL before getting an opportunity in the NHL. He played well for Toronto last year and LA this year before getting traded to Edmonton. Brittain may develop in to an NHL calibre goaltender one day but he has a long way to go.

  4. I think there is a lot of people know what your talking about and I agreed with your posts from earlier too... I would imagine there are others that do too.

Thanks Goon - appreciate all the work you do on your blog.

  5. OK Captains of the Obvious, everybody knows the USHL is by far the best supplier of players to NCAA D-1...you seem to claim it as inside knowledge...sometimes some very good players come from other leagues like the NAHL...this too is common knowledge.

  6. I didn't hate on the kid...I was simply thinking I'm fine with UND not getting him...that's all. I played through high school and went to college, I could have played in the NA. I know enough about the game to hold my own. The previous guy was right, my comment most likely came off a little strong but I don't think the ECAC is that great of a league based on the type of players they recruit/produce. I love UND hockey but I also love the talent that comes through the program (and other WCHA schools for that matter). As for my original comment, my thinking was I was perfectly fine with this kid choosing to go to another school given the schools that were recruiting him (or lack there of). UND will be able to find another solid goalie. I am also perfectly fine with Zane taking the reigns from here on out. I have seen a lot stronger comments aimed at kids who choose to go to other WCHA schools (more specifically UM). So just because I call a spade a spade and note the ECAC in general is not one of the toughest leagues...and their schedules are relatively weak, don't jump all over me. Read my initial post, it wasn't all that bad. Sorry if upset you.

You belittled SLU by saying that "if that was the best offer he got"...glad to hear you have endorsed Zane starting from here on out...you should let the coaches know because otherwise they will let the goalies' playing time go to whoever earns it, just as they did this year and every other year.

  7. Definitely, I didn't know he was a goalie. Every once in awhile a decent goalie comes from the NA. We'll agree to disagree regarding the ECAC...I look back further than one year. Their track record isn't that great.

Edit: For all of you instantly bashing my initial post...please see above.

You are giving advice to posters reacting "instantly" when you didn't know all the facts when you posted? ECAC with a track record not up to your standards? This is the here and now. This young man committed to a good program/school and you feel the need to dismiss it as sub-standard. Things change - there are plenty of programs that have been strong in the past that are not strong currently: Michigan State, Maine, LSSU come to mind. Some programs are showing much more potential now than they did in the past: UMass-Lowell, Union, Providence, Minnesota State, Western Michigan.

Maybe some posters are tired of you and a few others who post with a "know-it-all" attitude and never hesitate to comment negatively about young players, including those in the UND program. Along with the "know-it-all" attitude comes times when you fail to recognize facts. Why make comments that belittle players and coaches?

Did you play the game at a high level? Have you coached and recruited ?

  8. If St. Lawrence was the best offer he received....I'm fine with missing out on him. The NA is a decent league...but no where near the talent level of the USHL.

St. Lawrence is a great school...three all-Americans this year...part of ECAC that had two teams in the NCAA Championship game...why diss them?...USHL best league for sure, but sometimes very good players play in the NAHL.

  9. Lee being with the big club for some time this season was part of his negotiated deal. Collecting an NHL salary for several weeks and burning a year of entry level contract are incentives to sign.

  10. Sure but he's still a 2nd-4th round freshman defensemen. You are correct that he plays a physical game...I never really thought our D was overly bad last year. Collectively they were fine. At the end of the day, yes Mattson made the stupid spin-o-rama walking the tight rope but our D didn't lose us the game. Our forwards lacked chemistry all year long and our goalies were average at best. Our D didn't play great all year but it definitely wasn't the biggest flaw on last year's team. Going into next year I believe we have the strongest D core in the nation.....easy.

Wow...strongest D core in the nation? Forbort, Gleason, MacWilliam will all be missed...returning d-men should be a solid group to go along with some promising freshmen, but...please tell us who the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th strongest D cores in the nation are...goalies were not average at best, they were very good most of the time with a few games when bad goals went in...they were our best players in Grand Rapids.

  11. I'll try to give some perspective as a Gopher fan without being biased or troll-like. Championships are constantly determined by a couple of factors:

    1) Great goal-tending.

    2) Solid Defense

    3) Getting hot at the right time.

    4) Depth

It's not hard to see...that at least at this moment...UND is not firing on all four of these factors. There's no clear number #1 goalie that is playing well, the D has had a lot of let down moments, their energy/effort is not as good as it has been at other points, and they are getting most of their production from about 3 guys. I don't see 1 or 4 changing anytime soon; unless of course a goalie just gets hot...it can happen. When you're still debating line combos and who should dress that suggests there's not great depth. Saying the role players suck or can't help is going too far. All the players on a team like MN or UND are talented...but not all are high-end game changers. Regarding #2; the defense has some talent but hasn't seemed to gel. I always remember a Sioux D-core having big, tough guys to play against...not sure that edge is there this year...IDK though because I obviously don't follow it that closely. I know from our perspective we expect a hard hitting (cheap vs tough-nosed depending on your bias) effort from the Sioux and this years series there were hardly many scrums or penalties...they were way more tame than I remember them. Hell UMD played us with way more physicality. Seems there's a lot of concern they fired the wrong assistant. MN certainly did this with Hill and Guentzel and the squad went from very mediocre to very good pretty quickly once it was rectified.

I'd say the Sioux's best shot a a run lies with #3. They have historically been a team that plays very well at crunch time and they certainly can play with a lot of heart and pride; even if it's not happening right now. For this years squad to win...I think they need to get hot, play with passion, and probably get some good fortune to overcome some atypical shortcomings that they wouldn't normally have to worry about. I wouldn't bet on them because when your wondering if you'll even make the tourney that doesn't usually bode well for your chances. That said, I'd rather not face them and they will certainly be a tough out if they do get in...which I think they will.

Serious question...what point in the season would you cite that would give you faith that this team had the winning formula? In other words, what is their high mark you want them to get back to? With MN I could certainly point to efforts against BC, Notre Dame, UND Friday night, even a blowout against a lesser Mich St. What is the Sioux top end effort and, if they could get there, would that be good enough to consistently beat the best in the nation? Time will tell I guess. I'd wish you luck but I'd be lying. :)

Goaltending - Gothberg has picked up three weekly awards lately hasn't he? Saunders has a .928 save % and a 1.75 GAA in last four starts. Not playing well ??

  12. Saunders is an average goalie at best there was a reason he was playing at Alabama-Huntsville. We didn't need there sloppy seconds

Two ex-Alabama-Huntsville goalies are currently in the top four for two NHL teams. How many ex-UND goalies can say the same - zero?

Saunders has NHL interest, do you think they are interested in average (at best) goalies?

    Lame post man.

  13. Inconsistency is something we've seen a lot of this year, in a lot of different facets. The offense plays well in Denver but the goaltending doesn't show up. Then the scoring execution doesn't show up this weekend against the Beavs.

Like goon said though, it just takes four games. Duluth winning the championship had a ton to do with their road to the title game, but also with an extremely inconsistent team getting it figured out when they had to.

Did you watch the Saturday game in Denver?

  14. I doesn't look like any thing is being timed right after the last two weekends of play. The biggest disappointment is the defensive zone below the from the face off dots and below they are getting out played and it is becoming very costly. Saunders soft goals are more than frustrating, come out of the net and challenge the shooter! This first goal is just awful:

Another thing that irked me was a few of the players closing down Ground Round Thursday $2 teas night, I'm not their coach or parent but were is the personal discipline?

The goals you posted were against Gothberg.

  15. Especially since we have an older team and much of last year's team is back. Also, the addition of Rocco, Schmaltz (1st rounder), and Gothberg (5th rounder I believe and had a great Bruins development camp) should have also been a positive. Something is definitely not right, they are turning it on late that's for sure.

    Gothberg a sixth rounder.

    15/26 on roster are underclassmen.

  16. Looking at the scores of the tournament up in Alaska makes a guy think UND should get two wins. Anchorage wins the tournament, and Canisius beats Fairbanks. Hmmm....

ND will be missing Kristo, Knight, Rowney, O'Donnell, Parks and MacWilliam for UAA game. That's a lot of talent, experience and leadership missing. Not to mention that there will be very inexperienced players playing on special teams and perhaps in positions they are not used to. Also playing two men short of 18 skaters and in a time zone and rink they are not familiar with.

The next night they will be playing the home team without Panzarella, Gaarder, Pattyn, Kristo and Parks, again playing shorthanded and missing the things that those players bring.
