  1. When is the last time a UND coach got the axe? I agree that a coaching change is in order, but the problems with UND football go beyond that. The marketing for UND football has been horrendous. NDSU has been kicking UND's @ss in that department. Granted, NDSU has put together some winning teams, but the school has also done a damn good job of promoting the football program and the overall game day experience.

  2. One thing that I find interesting is that the nickname-at-all-cost people, and especially a certain blogger, are trying to claim that they want what is right. But they are willing to get it by using a potentially unconstitutional law. They are willing to go against the North Dakota Constitution to get what they want. Isn't that just a case of the ends justifying the means for them? The Constitution is supposed to mean something, it's the framework of our government. But obviously it doesn't mean anything to the nickname-at-all-costers.

The Constitution only means something to people like Rob Port when it supports what they want. When someone tries to uphold a Constitutional provision he does not like, that person is suddenly going against the "will of the people."

  3. I think we need to schedule Sioux Falls again since it will most likely be the last time we hear the word Sioux attached to any UND event in the near future once our weeny SBOHE gets make their inevitable decision to remove the nickname...At least the Cougars represented the Sioux name well which is more than can be said for our team today....

I'm surprised you ventured over from the hockey message board.

  4. Two points must be made...

    1. A win is a win and a loss is a loss, margin of victory is meaningless. Running up the score on a weak opponent may be fun for classless programs like NDSU, but I would like to think that our team is above such behavior.

    2. Let's give credit where credit is due, Sioux Falls is actually pretty good.

    1. There is a huge difference between not running up the score and almost losing the game. I wish we would have had the luxury of choosing not to run up the score in this game.

    2. USF is not that good. They started the season 0-3.

  5. Mussman has got to go. He should never have been hired as head coach in the first place, since he had no head coaching or DI experience when he got the job.

Meanwhile, NDSU gets the former defensive coordinator from Nebraska and is racking up a bunch of signature wins against DI programs. As much as I hate NDSU, I envy the success their football program has had since make the jump to FCS.

Today's game was an embarrassment to UND football. The result is no better than a loss in my book.

  6. I am not sure how he can call it a cheap shot, it's apparent from reading the blog post that he was very excited.

He comes off as excited about the start of a new academic year to me. He should be because UND has a lot of great things going for it. You can hate on Kelley all you want, but this thing was over before he even came to UND.

  7. From my experience, videoconferences work well for "team meetings" of colleagues and coworkers who share common ground and common interests.

For meeting with neutral or adversarial parties, face to face is still far superior. Plus, going to Indy is a powerful signal from the state of North Dakota.

This and humble pie is a dish best served in person. I'm sure Al Carlson will enjoy every bite.

  8. I interacted with Bob Boyd and Julie Evans in my time at UND. Boyd was a puritan who always brought up the fact that he didn't drink. Evans was a total harda$$ who wouldn't comply with a open records request until I brought her conduct to the attention of the Attorney General's Office. I am not surprised they aren't giving this kid a break.

  9. The populist and tea-party people - including Carlsen - despise the backroom dealings that forced the political establishment to kill the Sioux name.

Doesn't Al Carlson own commercial real estate that he leases back to the state? No backroom dealings ... hahahaha.

  10. My question is why is Jody Hodgson going? To answer questions about the REA? Bull........... REA is not a party to the settlement and he is the employee of a privately owned entity. This is a state issue. How come the GM of the Alerus Center isn't tagging along? Or a member of the Grand Forks Park Board to represent Kraft Field and Center Court Fitness?

I was wondering why Jody Hodgson is going too. He has been unreasonable with his stance on this issue. I remember when he was asked by a Herald reporter which of the Sioux logos in the REA would be very difficult to remove. He said "All of them." That alone tells you how helpful he will be at a meeting with the NCAA.

There are going to be way too many cooks in the kitchen from the UND/ND delegation at this meeting. The people who are going don't even agree on how this issue should be handled. I wish I could sit in on the meeting with a bag of popcorn.

  11. If the delegation acts like some of the posters on this board & lays down like the wussies (sp) that whine like a bunch of babies when some one shows some nads then they will get them handed to them.

They need to put up a united front & use all the ammo they can in this meeting.

It would be smart to take a SL contingent & keep Kelley in the background during the meeting.

Don't blow this chance, it may be the last one to keep the Sioux name.

You can talk tough on this board all you want. The name is going to change. The sooner you accept that, the better.

  12. Will Carlson get one vote when he comes up for reelection? Both Carlson and Shaft are some real characters. It is hard to have any respect for either of them. Carlson has no integrity whatsoever. He is going to come out of this fiasco looking like a real buffoon. I guess he already looks like that.

Grant Shaft's comments in today's Herald story show that he is a coward. He lacks any leadership and is clearly a pawn of the Legislature right now.

  13. The "people and the legislature" limited UND's options and created an untenable situation which forces UND to either suffer the consequences (which we can't afford to do) or else or fight our own legislature. The legislation has no effect on the NCAA and thus has not righted the wrong but has placed the future of UND athletics and especially the Big Sky membership and the schedule for future hockey games in jeopardy. How is any of tha t worth the name and logo? You and I have no influence over the NCAA and neither does our state legislature. This legislation has done nothing to forward the cause of the name but it has caused UND to be placed in a risky position as it pertains to conference membership for many sports and future scheduling for all sports. How much of that don't some understand and how is the name worth the risk at this late date. If we can get the tribes to change position then I am all for it but the rhetoric here does nothing to forward the cause.

Al Carlson's argument that the majority of the "people of ND" want to keep the nickname is such BS. I'm sure this is true if one asks the question "Do you favor keeping the Fighting Sioux nickname?" But what about if you ask "Are you in favor of keeping the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo even if it poses a significant threat to the success of UND's athletics programs at the Division I level?" The majority sentiment on this board appears to be (1) people favor keeping the nickname BUT (2) people don't favor keeping the nickname if it threatens the success of UND athletics (which has proven to be the case).

  14. D1 is proving to be a disaster

How can you say this? UND sports teams will be playing better opponents and the University as a whole is taking a step up in terms of nationwide prestige. If you cared at all about the University as a whole, you wouldn't make such a preposterous statement.

  15. I am surprised a good guy like Kelley tolerates this BS. He is a solid president and looks out for the best interests of UND, yet an asshole like Carlson makes an incredible outlandish accusation about him. This whole mess is shameful.

I agree. I was happy to finally see Kelley take a stand on this issue. The SBHE consistently waivers on the issue, the governor doesn't have the stones to speak up, and the Congressional delegation isn't going to say anything. This silence gives the appearance that Al Carlson is leading the charge, which would be scary if true. It was nice to see someone besides Mac Schneider take a stand in opposition to Carlson's misguided tactics.
