What players are you referring to?
It happens.......How many MN players have the Gopher's "missed" that could have played there and instead played for UND?
-
Also, Jon Bushy from EGF, who went on to play for Mankota, was in one of my classes at Moorhead State when he was playing for the Ice Sharks. He said that either Warroad or Roseau, I believe, tried to get him to play for them, but he chose to stay at EGF.
Or maybe he "wanted" to go to a different program, but it didn't work out.......
-
I would say this would be my guess also.
Same here......they would (should) be good possibilities.

Who on this site has never changed their mind? or ever went back on their word? I'm not saying Blais hasn't done this to players, but think about it! If he thinks a player needs more time playing juniors, then so be it! How can you say the player should have the final say??
Sometimes players leave early, sometimes they may stay even after most people thought they'd leave! Things change, therefore sometimes a coach needs to make decisions for the entire team! Does that mean he's thinking about himself only? Please......
I remember when Bryan Lundbohm was playing......he played a year of juniors, and Blais had said then he could come in.......things changed, Blais wanted him to go play Juniors one more year......did he like it? NO! But, he would have probably seen "limited" ice time on the team that year, and instead, got tons of playing time in Lincoln. Now who did that hurt? So he had to spend another year getting better! Looking back, I don't think he'd tell anyone that he (or Blais...) made a bad decision!
A coach makes decisions.....sometimes you like them.....sometimes you don't! No offense to Josh, but i know he was very upset about that fact.....and wouldn't settle for going back for a "second" year of juniors!
-
So, it would be fair to say that year in and year out, Blais is not necessarily "looking for the best players, but the right players."
Very true!

I'm sure there is more to the story. This is one of the top D1 programs in the country, not Pee Wee B hockey. Some kids are going to get burned. In 2001 Blais said he was going to give Pat O'Leary, a walk on that played well, a scholership the next season. The next season he cuts him, I'm not going to go out and call DB a liar, I'm sure their is more to the story.
There was also a rumor that Olson didn't have the ACT or GPA to get into school, as both UND and UM tried signing him. I would never say this as fact because I have no idea what went on, just like you.
Dean Blais does what is best for the UND program and the players. If he decides they will not fit into his game plan, he's not going to string them along. His numbers speak for themselves for his coaching abilities. His on and off ice interviews are always classy and down to earth. (except, maybe, his comments towards the goalies ).
I would have to say that Josh is a Roseau product, after being born in GF
Josh played a key roll on Roseau's championship team in 1999.....he was set to go to UND, however Blais wanted him to go back to juniors for another year. He didn't want to, and thus made the switch to go pro!
Josh was an excellent student, so I don't believe one bit that it was anything to do with grades.....other than he was not interested in going back to juniors for another year!
-
Well, with comments like that he obviously was looking ahead. I think we will be more of a TEAM next year.
You can't say that he was looking ahead with comments like that!?? I think that's unfair to him.
bottom line, they lost out.......and he made a decision after that!
If they would have won, who knows!

How does a coach score goals?
I will NEVER rip this team for the year it has had.......I've had more excitement this year following the team than I've had in a long time!
We got beat 1-0.......put up 30 + shots........how is that the coaches fault? We hit some pipes, shot a couple high or wide......and those "could" have been the difference.
to me, there is no place to whine after a season we had! No we didn't win a NC.....but it happens!
-
Yes he did. If Brandt hadn't come up big in the first period when the Gophers outshot the Sioux 17-8, UND could easily have been down 4-0.
First off, I think Jake would agree it wasn't his best performance overall of the year.......however, I agree.......his 1st period was very good! Wow did we get outshot!
a couple of his goals were "soft"......but then our guys didn't help him out a few times. One of the goals, we couldn't clear the zone due to some "lazy play" (IMO). Greene rarely will give up that GIFT of a pass right out front. So overall, we still would have had a chance to win if those goals aren't let in.
While I was totally impressed with JPar's game against AA, I am not sure how he would have handled that crowd and all the pressure?

I got an email again that WDAY will now carry it too.........
-
Hey Stevie Wonder.........Did you not see my post???
Its right above yours...
It is going to be on WDAZ in GF only...don't know about FSSN
I emailed WDAZ, and they said it would be on "WDAZ", and I asked if that meant whoever got WDAZ, like Roseau....and Sweeny actually emailed me back.....and said "Yes, that is correct"......so we'll see! I'll be down there, but it'll be fun to watch on tape when I get back......
lot of Sioux fans in Roseau too!

9 of us plan on attending all games........
-
The only thing I know for sure is that come Friday night, I'm a Bulldog fan!
That goes for 9 of us Sioux fans in Attendance.......GO UMD!
-
The only reason their numbers are so good is because of our defense.
I agree somewhat, our defense has bee very good......however, don't take away from the goalies accomplishments.....Give them some credit for once?!

I didn't know about the baseball programs and it's nice to hear that GF doesn't have those politics anymore. It never happen to me firsthand (cuz I sucked) but a few people I know it did.
In ND person for person I think Grafton PR (my opinion) has the best talent. For such a small town they produce good teams every year. I know Warroad has used Marvin Windows to "recruit" parents for their hockey program, has Roseau ever used the Arctic Cat factory in the same way or have they all been true Roseau products? I don't want to sound like Warroad has just recruited all their talent in either, I know they have always had a great program but I know in cases like Wyatt Smith, it has happened.
Arctic Crap is in TRF, it's Polaris here in Roseau!
There have not been any "Polaris recruits" for hockey that I know of. There have been the occasional player that does come to play here, but I don't recall many (if any) where the parents move here for a job, and they just happen to have a VERY GOOD hockey player
I believe there were close to 5-6 players who weren't "natives" on this years Warroad team. We just come to expect it lately!

Me TOO!!!

Do the Sioux get to be the home team for the Friday afternoon and the Saturday night games?
Since they are the highest seed, it won't matter who they play. They will be the "home" team each time they play.
-
They're obviously doing something right. It's a rarity that any Fargo school can touch them in in any sport. I know they don't generally play Fargo schools in football, but aside from maybe West Fargo once in awhile, Moorhead would dominate there also. And South must be at least as big of a school, so it's not just an enrollment issue.
I remember when Moorhead used to be dominated in Section 8 hockey! Now, even their youth hockey teams seem to be very good......so you're right, they are doing something right!
-
Thanks for the post mezzy. I like hearing success stories about anyone who played hockey in Grand Forks, whether it be youth, highschool, college, whatever. Hopefully Olson can secure himself a spot on the Panther's roster.
I believe Josh was born in GF......but he grew up and played hockey in Roseau! His mom was my HS English teacher here!
Pretty cool either way!

i third that. I've liked the way I've seen Canady play this year. It seems like he has matured alot from last year, and is making better decisions, and playing more physically.
No offense to Palmo.....I really like the guy! however, his size was really noticeable again last weekend....(especially next to that big DORK #20!)
Canady (if he stays out of the box) seems to play more aggressively, and I agree....more physical!
I heard the lines were Mcmahon, Genoway, Fyling? Hale, Fabian, Canady for the 3, 4 lines.......probly not bad considering Prpich out!?

There have been instances before Minnesota went to A and Double AA that Red River beat the Minnesota State Champion - I believe that Roseau's only loss was to RR back in the 90's when Blais was the coash.
Losses to Red River at your barn, and to Grand Rapids in Roseau. Yes Blais was the coach then......good times

I don't know about North Dakota hockey as a whole, but as for a city, name a city in Minnesota that has sent as many players on to D1 in the last 5 or 6 years than Grand Forks? Might be one, but off hand I don't know what the city would be. I know Minnesota loses players to the USHL too, but Central would have been awfully good this year had they kept Morgan Simonson and the other Lamoureaux boys who went to juniors. Red River and Central have traditionally been able to compete well with top tier Minnesota teams. When Roseau won the Minnesota title one year, the only loss they had was to Red River. Just saying that Grand Forks competes very well with Minnesota's elite, although it goes in cycles.
Roseau itself sent q few players on that year.......yes RR beat us! I believe it was in ND though? That was a little sore spot that year, but there should have been a "re-match"

Who's to say another year of "seasoning" would have helped either? Even if they are in the minors, they still got big $ to sign!
Do they regret their decision? I'm sure their pocket book says no!
There are many variables that play a part in everybody's advancement and development!
Good luck to Zach!
Put yourself in the athlete's shoes and then decide if you would sign a pro contract or not.
