  1. It is his opinion that Herbel is the best skater in the state. I would not use that information to justify a NHL prospect being snubbed of Mr. Hockey. There are many factors that go into assessing the quality of a players ability to skate. Is he talking about skating in a straight line? Or is he factoring into how he moves side to side, front to back, and from a stand still. Alexander Ovechkin is not a very good skater in a straight line. Next time you have the opportunity, watch him on a one on one. He is always moving side to side, crossing over, because he is not as confident skating in a straight line, that is why he is so hard to defend against. But, he bends at the waist, and the force of his push does not travel through his center of gravity. It would be my assumption, that if you were to ask Coach Hoff if Ovechkin is indeed a good skater, he would probably reply with yes, and he would not be able to tell you much other than that. While Ovechkin is a tremendous skater when he is moving from side to side, and is explosive from a standstill, he is hardly the model for perfection for skating stride. Some players have strides that are actually too good. Yes, too good. Take Kyle Okposo for example. Okposo has a tremendous stride that is powerful and very long. The only problem is, it may be too long for optimal footspeed. While Herbel may be a good skater, Coach Hoff would have to assess the ability of every players ability in the state to skate as well as close to perfection as possible. I do not believe Bottineau traveled too far East, so I'm not sure how he would have the means to study each players stride at any significant level.

    End lesson.

There are many other factors that go into the voting process for Mr. Hockey from what I know. Mr. Wurden obviously didnt stack up in the other areas to herbel or the other candidates. Get over it. If you honestly think this is gonna make or break Danny Wurden you are crazy. He will still go to Sioux City and play in the USHL and we shall see what happens from there. Good luck to both Herbel and Wurden.

  2. Andy Dittus and Tyler Jundt are playing for the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) Marc Mihulka and Marc Harrie are playing for the FM Jets (NAHL) and Alex Olson is playing for the Bismarck Bobcats (NAHL). Lane Smith is playing club hockey in San Diego. I'm not sure if any others from that team are still playing.

Thanks for the post so the assumption of the East boys leading the Showcase team didnt lead to them playing at the next level. Interesting!! :D

  3. The voting process for these awards are not perfect. Same goes for all-tournement and the all-state awards. At the end of the day, what is a certificate that says "All-State" or "Mr. Hockey". It's a certificate. It doesn't really get you anything but recognition. So for all the players and parents that may be upset about how it turned out my advice to you is to forget about it. I gaurentee there is not a Jr. coach or college coach who is going to recruit someone because they made all state, or because they were Mr. Hockey. Your not going to see Columbus stop recruiting Wurden because Herbel won Mr. Hockey. My bet is they will roll their eyes and continue on in there regular fashion.

I don't think it is logical for someone from the West to try and bash the quality of players coming from the East (Erick Galt). Although he may not have got the playing time he wanted when he was at Lincoln, that does not mean he is not fit to play in that league. Players from the West have moved on from high school hockey and have done very well. No one will argue that. As far as the jab you took at players from Team ND playing Jr's. Team ND was mostly led by players from the East. The top two lines looked like this- Marc Mihulka, Paul Campbell, Nick Klenow; Andy Dittus, John Greicar, Marc Harrie. Five of the six are from the East. Brad Benke, David Hovet, Lane Smith, Tim Greigoire, Tony Kringstad were also on the team from the East. That is not all the players, but I'm drawing a blank. Point being, the team was led by players from the East, not the West.

Nice post. Could you please tell me where those players are playing now? Thanks :D

  4. Well once again the Riders pull it out. I guess Malm pretty much showed Wilson how you coach. After the 2nd period it looked like it was all South, but Malm makes the adjustments and his team outplays South in the 3rd. Note to Wilson: when you are down 2 goals you should probably get your goalie out of the net for an extra attacker. That is fundamental hockey I believe. Nice job again Mr. Wilson. Malm is by far the best coach in the state.
