  1. Really? A playoff game at the Alerus Center for Winona State? That's a new one.

Looking forward to game, even though I don't like how I think it'll turn out. I like what I've seen out of Winona State this year, I do believe it's a stronger team than last year's squad.

  2. Or, maybe Winona State, Bemidji State, C-SP, one other NSIC join the core NCC of SCSU, MSU-M, UMD, and Augie.

No reason for those teams to do it. Teams from the NSIC aren't at those fully funded levels yet, so why should they join in to the NCC? The left overs from the NCC will play by the NSIC rules or find somewhere else to play.

  3. wsuwarrior,

This UND team is beginning to look like something special. Potentially dominant on both sides of the ball. Your guys ran into a team that seems to really be clicking right now.

Clicking our not, I think my team can win every week. No matter the opponent. UND in football, Virginia Union in basketball. Every week. You guys maybe clicking, I'm still pissed at the performance of WSU. 35-0 is not acceptable in any circumstance.

Sigh. I was there when WSU took you guys to the wire in 2003. It seems like forever ago.

  4. I solidly disagree that Minnesota needs a new on campus baseball stadium.

The only way possible would be if they could pair up with a minor league team and share the costs.

That way the stadium wouldn't sit empty taking up space for 49 out of 52 weeks a year.

Outdoor baseball in the upper midwest during 80% of the NCAA basebal season is just no good.

I wish it wasn't that way but it is.

My point behind wanting an on-campus stadium for the Gophers is so that the team is more likely to stick around. If they push the team off to the Midway Stadium in St. Paul, then they're very, very close to just dumping the team all together.

Yes, outdoor baseball doesn't work in the NCAA season in the upper midwest. But I'd rather not see a team abandoned because Joel Maturi wanted to please the title XI crowd.

  5. They should just get rid of baseball at the U of M. They've never been a national contender and the scholarship money isn't there. Exspecially if the Metrodome goes, it would be smart just not to have it.

Big Ten champs 2002, 2003, 2004. Yea, that's a crappy team that should be dumped.

They, along with the football team need to get their own on-campus stadiums. But I digress.

  6. Just gonna pop in and say I'd love to see UND get a lacrosse team.

I used to live in Columbus Ohio, where my local high school had a team. I really started to love the sport there. Since I moved up to Minnesota, I was stuck with out a team until the Swarm came to the cities. This season the average attendance will finish at about 8k a game. There are a few reasons to this: 1) The Wild came back so people with nothing better to do with their sports dollars went back to the Wild. 2) Dates became harder.

In indoor lacrosse, the average fan is in their 20's, much younger than the average age of an NHL fan (or at least game-attender). I don't have the exact stats, but I believe it's higher for outdoor lacrosse.

There is definitely a cross over between lacrosse and hockey fan bases, but it's not exact. But it's close enough to be significant.

Adding lacrosse would give spring dates to the Alerus. And has it has been mentioned, being close to Canada could be big for the team.

Speaking purely as a fan of the sport, I hope you add lacrosse.

  7. As a Winona State fan, I just felt a little better. After last year's game, I was fearing UND having a week off before they faced the Warriors.

Best of luck on every game that isn't against Winona State.

  8. Are we sure this thread-starter is even a UND fan?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

They very well may not be, but from their post, I can at the very least draw from it that they are a fan of an NCC school.

My statement still stands, the UND fans I met down here in Winona, as well as the large majority I've met online are still polite. Better than they were a few years ago (in my eyes, opinion does differ on that)

  9. Good job sioux this weekend, you finally completed the task of shuting Winona's faces up. Winona had a great celebration for their 100 years of football. You've had 100 years of football and you can only come up with 6 points. The only thing Winona got was 51 points stuffed up their ass after UND bent them over and said, "This is why you are an NSIC team, because you suck!".....And the only reason that Duluth made it out of crap pile you call a league is because a coach from the NCC had to come and help them out. :silly:

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Mature. Very. It's people like you that make me loathe the NCC. The majority of UND fans I met were very poilte. You on the other hand make me want to puke.

  10. I wonder if the announcer on the videocast is this guy?  I still kind of like him, nice mellow style.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Nope, that's not me. I was at the game as a fan (as we rotate staff), left at the half because I needed to go find my bottle of whiskey.

Oh, and I'm a radio guy, not television.

I'm not sure who is doing the game on the video (other than HBC)

  11. I don't think Winona State's stadium is all that big guys.  My friends who went to the GVSU playoff game did say that it was pretty small.  That might be the reason why they're being stingy with tickets to UND.  They might like to at least try to make a record crowd for them for the most part home fans.  :p  :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Maxwell Field at Midwest Wireless Stadium seats about 4500. Yes, I realize that it's pitiful compared to GVSU and UND. But it's home to us and I wouldn't change it for a thing.

Here's my response on the subject from a different thread:

However there are major financial issues still at concern for Winona State before that jump is made.

    1) Scholarships: More scholly dollars need to be in the system.

    2) Facilities need an upgrade.

Midwest Wireless Stadium (football, women's soccer, softball) has improved greatly over the past five years. New bleachers, increased capacity, new ticket booth, and a new pressbox with luxury suites. Softball NEEDS to move out of the football stadium, bar none. It just plain looks ugly with a snow fence.

Memorial Hall (men's and women's basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, women's indoor track) The Volleyball team will certainly benefit from the new volleyball specific floor and arena set up in the south end of the fieldhouse. I would love to see the basketball team with a better set up. Under the best circumstances, I'd like a set up like MSU-Mankato. Failing that, a set up like Southwest Minnesota State would increase the seating capacity. Sadly, a new set up can't happen for seating until space is found for spring teams to practice It would be nice to have a new base floor placed for the track team, I can't imagine the indoor set up is the friendly to run on).

Loughrey Field (baseball) The baseball team's facilities have gotten better with a great new press box, although more seating would be nice.

St. Teresa's Tennis Center (men's and women's tennis) A great set up for tennis from what I understand. No real complaints.

Cedar Valley Golf Course (men's and women's golf) It was nice enough for the NCAA to award the Regional, so I have no complaints (although, I'm not a golfer, I'm not sure what could be changed from that end).

Lake Park (men's and women's cross country) - beautiful set up, crowd friendly. It could be better in some respects, but for all things considered, it's nice.

Paul Giel Field (outdoor women's track) I'm not sure I've seen a home meet since I started here four years ago, so I'm guessing this is what would be used if they hosted something here (perhaps Winona State and Saint Mary's could build a joint stadium).

Once the facility upgrades happen and scholarships go up, I could see this as more of a possibility. But that's gonna take money and time. One we have, and one we're working on.

  13. Will be there for sure - what is the ticket situation at WSU?  Last season at St. Cloud I was told three times that the game was sold out before I finally  caught some, then the playoff game had seats unsold.  Hopefully the WSU athletics has more of a clue about  the  possibility of visiting fans.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If you are worried, contact the athletic office.

  14. I just moved back to GF.  I had been down in that area the last 3 years, I think I'll head back and watch the Sioux whoop up on Winona and visit friends after.  How big is the stadium?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Big enough to be home, small enough that I expect visiting fans will make fun of it.

About 3.5k for seating, but there is standing room for another 2k.

  15. While it's probably a little early to start talking about week three of the season, is anyone coming to Winona for this battle of two fantastic Northwest Region teams?

I'm already chomping at the bit for the college football season to get underway, fall Saturdays are so much fun!

  16. Ok, I'm going to reply en masse.

Would I enjoy seeing Winona State move from the NSIC to the NCC? Yes, without question.
