I apologize, I have been remiss in updating you about Matt Smaby at Lightning training camp this year. The general feeling in Tampa prior to the beginning of camp was that the 6th Dman spot was Matt's to lose. Matt has had a good camp but did struggle in "Camp "Torture-ella's" NASCAR lap testing in the 1st two days of camp. The laps continue at the end of each practice during camp too. Smaby Working His Way Through It
As mentioned earlier Matt played in his first preseason game last night. The general feeling is Matt played well, better then his D partner who had some brainfart episodes last night. After the game the 1st cut of players was announced and Matt remains in Tampa.

FALCONS WIN OPENER - BEAT PACK 3-2October 07, 2006
The Springfield Falcons beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 3-2 Saturday night at the Hartford Civic Center. Falcons goaltender Sean Burke stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced earning the game's second star. The Falcons started fast and furious when rookie Matt Smaby scored his first pro goal 45-seconds into the first period giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead over the Wolf Pack. At 3:17 of the opening period, captain Norm Milley gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with his first marker of the year.

I know Fedotenko is recovering from hip surgery. How's he look?
Feds hasn't played in any PS games yet. He does take part in practice and all drills but they are holding him out of games right now. He told me on Sunday he will definintely be ready for opening night.
FYI - Matt is playing tonight in Montreal, he made it through the 2nd set of cuts. The Lightning coaching staff ticked me off by not playing him on Sunday night at home.

Matt Smaby will be in the lineup tonight for the Lightning's first preseason game in Washington at 7pm. You can listen to the game at TampaBayLightning.com click on LISTEN LIVE under TONIGHT'S GAME. Sorry but there is no Lightning TV coverage during training camp.
FYI - I'll have some Smaby pics from Lightning training camp to post later tonight.

I see there's already been some commentary posted about Smaby. IMO he looked really good in the 3 scrimmages I watched. He got lots of playing time, wasn't afraid to shoot the puck and pinch. Most were impressed with his size and skating ability.

FYI - Matt Smaby will be attending the Tampa Bay Lightning's Conditioning and Evaluation camp this week 7/25-29. I'll post some commentary & pics late in the week if anyone is interested.

On a separate note, has anyone heard any rumblings about Smaby? I heard there was a rumor on the radio in GF that he was going to sign.

Unfortunately I don't know but based on the microphone logo I'd say she a new member of the Lightning staff or TV crew. I'm guessing we'll find out next Thursday during opening night!
The Lightning made some cuts yesterday and today and Matt remains in Tampa and is playing vs Dallas tonight. Word from the Lightning is they could make 1 more cut at Dman but hopefully Matt's performance vs Detroit showed the coaching staff what he is capable to do now. *crossed fingers*
