  1. On 1/6/2016 at 10:18 AM, I Ranger said:

Surprised to see Mattson jump up. I have heard he hasn't had the greatest high school season so far and has been very inconsistent.

I don't think it's a jump. ISS has had him that high all year and uh.....must not have seen him play recently.

  2. Regarding the "high stick" goal on Friday:  I believe the problem the announcers (and many others, also) were having probably stemmed from their lack of hockey rules knowledge.  It is my understanding that if a player from Team A makes puck contact with a his stick above the crossbar:  1) no goal can be scored if it goes directly into the net, 2) a whistle to stop play occurs if a teammate on Team A is the first to touch the puck.  What cancels out the whistle is if an opponent (Team B) touches the puck.  Then the puck is "fair game" for all players.  This is what happened when the puck, deflected with a UND high stick, hit the St.Cloud goalie.  With the puck, then in play for either team, the UND player shot the rebound into the net.  Good goal!

I think it was a good goal because it wasn't a high stick, but that's absolutely incorrect about the rule. The standard is possession of the puck for a washout, and there's no way Lindgren has possession of the puck. They wouldn't wave off a goal on a delayed penalty because it tipped off the goalies pads before it went in either.

87.2 High-Sticking the Puck - Batting the puck above the height of 4 feet with a stick is prohibited. When a puck is struck with a high stick and subsequently comes into the possession and control of a player from the offending team (including the player who made contact with the puck), either directly or deflected off any player or official, there shall be a whistle.

  3. I bet you men's season tickets you don't have to fly from DEN to MSP to FSD

Yes, if you want to spend an extra $100, there is one flight from Denver to Sioux Falls that leaves Denver at 10pm at night and lands at 12:30am on a Thursday. I'm sure Denver/CC fans will be lining up for that option.

  4. Anyone got this Enebek kid from Lakeville North? 22 goals from a sophomore is pretty dang good. Kid is a horse.

Edit: See now he's uncommitted. I like him. Again, 22 goals from a soph, especially since he's not on the Poehling line.

His dad was a Gopher, FWIW.

  5. And I'd like to see USA Hockey, the IIHL, and the NHL create a developmental program for officials. You find the good ones from the lower ranks, and move them ON MERIT AND SKILL through HS, juniors, the NCAA, the AHL, and finally the best end up in the NHL. We claim officials are professionals; why not run them up to the pro ranks the same way the pro players get there.

That system does exist. College hockey just doesn't participate in it.

  6. There were two different types of tenders this year:

Futures tender--These were for players born in 1998. Any team can sign up to two Futures tenders, and have to give up a draft choice in the top two rounds to do so. The player is they sign is automatically on the team and has to dress in 50% of his teams' games or that team loses his rights.

Expansion tender-Madison and Bloomington each got five tenders to start their team prior to the draft. Those players aren't necessarily guaranteed a spot, nor is there any provision for how much they have to play. Bloomington traded one of their five to Fargo for Zach Yon.

  7. I'm shocked that Schmaltz wasn't selected to the U18's.....I know much of the team is filled with NTDP players but typically they pull in 2-3 other top players from the USHL. I wonder what the story is there.

Green Bay still has a shot at making the playoffs. They could still add him if Green Bay's season ends before the tournament.

  8. There was no way Toews was ever in danger of not making a Canadian national team. He was too good. But it was suggested to him that his younger brother's chances of making a national team would be better if Jonathan signed with the CHL.

Hakstol doesn't have the resume to coach Team Canada at the World Juniors. You have to go back a ways to find a coach that doesn't have NHL, or at least AHL, head coaching experience.

  9. There is a massive difference in the number of viewers for a game on CBSSN vs a game on FCS.

Doubtful. A big college hockey crowd on NBC Sports Network draws maybe 150,000 viewers, and NBCSN has a much larger potential audience. If there is a difference in the number of viewers between CBSSN and FCS, you're talking about maybe a couple thousand either way, which is pretty insignificant.

The NCHC isn't making any money on their TV deal, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if the schools were actually paying in to get on TV.

  10. Does anyone know why they release this final list while the U18s are still going on? The draft isn't till late June. I feel like the U18s could really change some stock values.

The primary purpose of the Central Scouting list is to give NHL teams another list to check compared to their internal lists. If Central Scouting ranks anybody significantly higher/lower than they do, they may make sure to give that player an extra look.

  11. I'd think that the coaches would bring in some other guys from Shattuck with Noel for a visit. Tyler Vesel, Chase Phelps, Ryan Norman, Georgy Gorodetsky, Frankie Spellman, and Cody Kuster are guys that stand out with their numbers (not sure if any of these guys have been recruited).

It's an unofficial visit, so basically an open invitation along the lines of "If you want to come up, and can get up here on your own, we'd love to have you."

Phelps and Norman are definitely potential Sioux targets. The other three uncommitted players aren't D-1 prospects at this point.

  12. Thats a good question. I like Slattery and also have liked Zach Lavalle a lot for a couple years now. I think he will be a good two way college player for somebody in the future. I was also pretty impressed with the 8th grader they had Anderson and think he will be one to keep an eye on in the coming years.

You're not out on a huge limb with Anderson. He's one of the best in the country for his age group.

  13. He's only supposedly stepped up to build the barn. Outfitting and financially supporting two D1 hockey teams isn't cheap, even for a billionaire especially over time. That said, I think Penn State would be in a good position to seriously recruit talent from the northeast, as well as support from its alumni network. I work with a few Penn State alums, and even though they're not really college hockey fans, they're pretty excited about the prospect of a D1 Nittany Lions hockey program.

If you own your own building, it wouldn't be that tough to make enough money off men's hockey to support a women's team.

  14. Was that really the case?

The odds of Crosby ever playing for the Sioux were equal to the odds of him playing for any other college team. They were also equal to the odds of him spending a year in the International Space Station orbiting the Earth.

  15. I don't think it was a probable cause thing. I think being a member of the North Dakota hockey team IS considered probable cause.

Also, I wonder if they got anyone from the Fighting Sioux Sports Network to testify about how often St. Frattin practiced while he was home in Alberta after being kicked off the team.

  16. I thought Blake Kessel went to UNH because UNH was the school that impressed him the most, that recruited him, that was close to his brother?

If Phil was drafted by the Wild and signed to play with the Wild, something tells me he would have ended up at Minnesota. I don't care what your thoughts of Lucia are. ;)

Blake went to UNH because it was the school that wasn't Michigan Tech. He did not have an impressive array of offers at the time, but has done well for himself at UNH.
