  1. I know this is a little off the subject but, is it just me or whenever there is talk about the upcoming season in the media they mention the transfers and Nash but never Traylor. Is he in the mix or is he a former player?

  2. I know Chris, and his comment was tongue-in-cheek. Every coach out there knows they are playing second fiddle to hockey. We have even lost some recruits because their sport is second or third compared to hockey. Good luck to Chris.

  3. I've been to plenty of UND hockey and basketball games through the years. Most schools can be classified as one-sport schools no matter how much success other programs have. I currently live in Michigan, and the Wolverines have always and will always be a football school. Even when they won the NCAA men's basketball title in 1989 and the Fab Five subsequently followed, men's basketball at its peak paled in comparison to football. Once the basketball team sunk into mediocrity, it has become nearly insignificant in the state and will continue to be until it experiences success again. Florida is another example. They won consecutive basketball titles, yet will always be a football school. Once Florida's basketball teams dip in talent, they will be nearly forgotten by the majority of fans. UND is a hockey school plain and simple. Football is a close second because of its continuous success and the fact that football is such a popular sport in general. The women's team is popular because of the success it has enjoyed, but once that ends, unfortunately so will its popularity. Men's basketball just hasn't been successful. I love basketball and check UND's scores when I get the chance, but I am the exception when it comes to UND alumni and always will be. It sucks that's the way sports fans are these days, but it's a reality.

If the coaches don't understand that, then they are the ignorant ones. If any coach thinks he's going to come to UND and unseat hockey and football, he's kidding himself. Coach Jones knew the score when he took the job. If he thinks he's going to get more support at a small NAIA school, then he's going to be disappointed yet again. Those schools take a backseat to the local high school programs, so if he has a problem playing second fiddle to a powerhouse Div. I program, it's going to be a long tenure in Sioux Falls. I obviously wasn't at the press conference, I read the quote the way it was printed and thought it was a immature shot at the hockey program and UND fans. If he was misquoted or he said it as a joke, then I'm the first to admit it was a very funny one and wish him the best of luck. If it was the potshot it appeared to be, then I stand by what I've posted.

  4. Is that a shot? :D

Once again there were alot more empty seats in the second half. And I know they weren't watching the game from the bar. Hopefully the men's performance will keep more people at the game on Thursday.

  5. I don't know what Coach Jones did to fire the gus up ,but that was a very good effort from top to bottom. They could have folded at half after losing that lead ,but they came out and stuck with it and got it done. A very entertaining game for those who stayed for the secong half.

  6. I don't think we can judge Jones' success or failure as a coach/recruiter quite yet. The upcoming recruiting year will be very crucial in determining that. We could be possibly looking at 6 to 9 new players with graduation, defections and maybe some not being asked to return. If the current group can't get a respectable team together in 2 years, then I'd say we've got trouble.

Outside of Little, it looks like the team is losing more desire every week. Losing does not help that, but like alot of other fans ,I don't see us winning another game all year.

On a side note, it would be nice to see a large contingent of students show up for at least one game and try to generate some electrcity in the Betty. Maybe the last game of the year. It would be a nice problem for the staff at the Betty to see how they would handle it if 1000 students happened to show up for a game.

  7. My wife got a call from a fellow tailgater today and he said that the Alerus is charging $30 per spot. I don't know if that means $30 per parking space or what. If you need 6 spots to park a motorhome will it cost 180? I don't know. He also said that there will be no spots on the far west side of the lot. If they want to charge per car that's fine, but they should not be taxing the tailgaters. Then what happens if a car load comes in and randomly parks at the south end of the lot and has a couple of beverages and snacks before the game? Is there going to be a tailgating patrol? They better make their plans public before kick off.

  8. I,too, like the direction the men's team is headed. I also noticed more people stuck around after half time last night. Quite a few fans were even applauding the effort as the team left the floor. This team needs a few wins for their confidence. They could also be a team that can play a major role in the NCC tournament.

  9. Congratulations Fighting Sioux on a great season and winning the conference championship. Have a long playoff run!!!!

    GO FIGHTING SIOUX!

    GO SCARLET KNIGHTS!

I watched the 4th quarter Thursdsay night and as the saying goes "good teams find a way to win". That was a great game to watch and Rutgers deserves a chance to play in a BCS bowl if not the championship game. BUt without a play-off it is all up to voters.

    Good luck Scarlet Knights.

  10. Some more thoughts about the two games. As far as TO's go against Purdue,it sounds like a point of emphasis this year is palming. It was called alot in the Purdue game and not so often taday. Either they cleaned up the problems or these refs were letting it slide. Personally I would really like to see that called until the players start dribbling the way they are supposed to dribble.

Also Coach Johnson and Coach Jones were very high on Gutter's offensive play. I guess he has made some big strides from last year. Now if he would start to rebound like the coaches say he does in practice we could have some kind inside game this year.

The only mystery about the week end, and maybe I missed something, is where is Boyce.

I can't wait to see the team play as I think they will put some excitement back in men's basketball.

  11. Getting geared up for the start of basketball season. Purdue is less than a week away. I see UND's 2006-07 Prospectus is out, and so is the NCC Media Guide. I know South Dakota is ranked 14th in the preseason poll, but Minnesota St. should be very good again this year as well.

As for the Sioux, I'm not sure what to expect, but I am excited to see a different style of program from what we have seen the last 5 years or so. UND had virtually no presence in the paint last year. That should change with a healthy Koenig, the addition of Dryburgh, and hopefully the 6-9 265 lb. freshman Ben Lehnertz can contribute. Gutter is a big body as well.

A couple of thoughts/questions about some of the incoming players:

Boyce, Dryburgh, and Youmens: I like the fact that all three of these guys come from winning programs, which usually means they play with a team first mentality, rather than a me first mentality. Youmens was a big scorer and Boyce a good shooter FG% wise, two things this teams needs.

Little: Had nice stats at his JC last year, averaged around 15 points and shot 40% on 3-pointers. But he only played in six games. Was he injured or was it for other reasons?

He was recruited by Glas and Co. last year but would not sign early. He was dismissed from his JC team for unspecified reasons and UND dropped him from their list also. Hopefully he learned his lesson.

I think we can have a respectable team if we play as a team and stay out of trouble off the court. Here's hoping Jones can right the ship.

  12. When Ben was assistant here they had 1 good season. Would the fans be asking for Ben back then? He really hasn't proved any thing and yet is being given a great opportunity. And I hope he succeeds. I think Randall deserves an opportunity on a very short leash. If he can turn it around great. if he can't he'll be the first guy to admit it and move on.
