  1. And what is that job description? Don't expect doantions to stay coming in? Gee how long have I been hearing that claim? Standing up to a bunch of people who think they should be in charge is what courage is. Respect now there is a joke. Respect is all the Native American slurs I have been hearing all my life in this town?

Personally getting sick of this, suck it up and quit being so soft. Being white, when people make racist slurs against me, I'm expected to shrug it off, white people make racist slurs against anyone, the sky is falling! someone do something about it!

  2. Disagree. A good leader will push the envelope, within reason, until the proper authorities tell you you have pushed too far.

Analogy: you know there is a governor on the truck but you don't know what the cut-off is, so you go as fast as you can until it cuts off. The within reason part comes into play when you're going 75 mph and no cut-off yet, you probably don't keep pushing to 90.

Unfortunately, the governor (SBoHE) was completely broken in this case and Chapman pushed it too far. But to say it's 100% Chapman's fault for pushing at all? Bulllllsh*t. Everyone pushes the envelope.

I think your logic is lacking. Think of it like a buisness, to pay for Project A, you take from Project B. To complete Project B, you take from Project C. At some point, you run out of money and can't complete projects. For NDSU, at what point do they start spending payroll to pay for over budget projects? The money needs to come from somewhere.

  3. Guys...can you at least admit that the only reason you want the Summit to admit UND prior to the nickname resolution is that you think it gives better odds that the nickname could be kept (since Summit membership is one of the driving forces for dropping it)?

how about so we can get on the schedule for confrence sports while the SBHE tries to figure out what they want to do while saving their reputation

  4. Yes you did mince words, to satisfy your personal hatred.

The only thing that matters in the discussion is whether he intentionally acted in a way that he knew would a) take money away from the university and b) cause himself to personally benefit.

No one has ever given even a shred of evidence that points to such acts.

Intentionally brought his family on a vacation taking $22,000 away from the school that could have been used for something else.

  5. NDSU's budget is $275 million, the school is potentially $1.8 million over. It is a fraction of a percent at the worst, the school is hardly swimming in red ink. So unless this deficit grows a 0 behind the 1, Chapman didn't exactly leave a horrible mess in this instance. The house is a mess, his questionable spending is another(in regards to what the foundation gave him not state/tutition money), but this deficit is hardly anything significant.

I have no problem with the hiring freeze, I have major problem in regards to how Hanson handled it all. PR is a major part of what a president does, fixing the budget is another but if you are going to run a University of this size you better be able to handle the PR side of things. But then again he is just an interim, he would be under qualified for the full time job and that is a major reason as to why he got the job in the first place.

So when you go to pay your bills and are $20 short, do you just tell the bank "don't worry about it, it's just a fraction of a percent"? I don't think banks really care when it comes to collections, if you don't have the money, you will be paying fines and late fees. 1.8 Mil is alot of money to come up with expecially if it is the end of the year and you have to wait for the next round of student loan payments to fund your accounts.

  6. What part about students borrowing money from banks to pay their tuition payments confuses you?

If the banks haven't sent those tuition payments to NDSU yet, then it would appear as a budget shortfall.

Why don't we wait until all the money is in before jumping to conclusions?

maybe something has changed since I went to school but if the student loans weren't in by about mid term, they ask the student to pay up. Part of an agreement on student loans is that the bank has to pay by a certian date, this shouldn't have anything to do with banks holding money longer than they should but possibly NDSU thinking they would get the money before they were scheuled to.

  7. That is life, basically every entry level English course and public speaking course at NDSU is taught by a grad student. Every student is required to take those courses, do the math. You either pay a professor a full salary/benefits or give a grad student a tuition waiver/stipend to do it. This isn't exactly something unique to college academics, but if parents want to pay more so their kid can be taught general courses by a professor I'm sure it could be done. Of course I don't think NDSU is going to win lots of friends by doubling their tuition.

The undergrads need to pay up, and if they don't they can't sign up for spring classes or get their diplomas.

I think you're missing the point. NDSU has probably more than 1,000 on waviers than UND with a student base roughly 1,000 more. How can it take NDSU that many more waivers than UND to get grad students to teach classes to roughly the same number of students?

  8. That number could be a bit misleading.

A lot of times a university will grant a tuition waiver to a graduate student IF he works for the university (say as a research or teaching assistant), say 20 hr/week for a full tuition waver, 10 hr/week for 50% waiver.

So it's not like the university is just giving tuition away for nothing.

If you want to grow your graduate program and your research, which NDSU does, then you've got to have grad students. And a lot of times grad students, especially good ones, are going to want some kind of financial help.

Good job you read the part of the article about grad work.

If you do the math, they wouldn't have the budget issue is they gave out 500 less waivers. Do they really need over 20% of their students having a free ride? Note: math based on 14,186 students and 3,066 waivers.

  10. Where did the interlocking "ND" (for North Dakota, in this case) come from? Did North Dakota use it first or did Notre Dame? I have thought it was interesting that they both use a very simmilar logo. Thanks.

P.S. Personaly I would rather see North Dakota use the old "S" with the tomahawks.

Working with a couple of Notre Dame guys, I have realized one thing, North Dakota has the symbol trade marked while Notre Dame has it copyrighted. It might have something to do with the way the letters interlock.
