  1. The flip side is, we KNOW Smith can win as a head coach at a school where it is extremely difficult to win. His record there, albeit brief, speaks for itself. With Herbst, while it's possible he could be better than Rich was, it's a complete unknown. Herbst was moderately successful as a juco head coach, and he's been moderately successful (at best) as an assistant, regardless of whether you judge him by his recruiting or by the record UND has accumulated during his tenure.

I agree that recruiting will take a big hit, but that alone is not enough of a reason to simply promote the next guy in line. Objectively, anybody would have to admit that UND men's basketball has been, at most, moderately successful the past decade. Under those circumstances, hiring from within would be unusual, if not potentially foolish.

I can respect a difference of opinion, but the UND men's basketball program already has a major problem in that most of the fans no longer care. We need new blood, completely untainted by the string of embarrassing losses that have occurred during the Glas/Herbst era, in order to get people excited again. Regardless of whether it's Smith or not, I really want somebody from the outside to be the next coach. I strongly suspect that most of the 80-plus% of fans who wanted Rich to leave would agree. I believe hiring Herbst would be the worst UND coaching hire, in terms of hiring from within, since Pat Behrns took over for Gene Murphy.

it would not be the worst hire and another thing is maybe we should not judge the assistant that sits next to the head coach. because we all know it is human nature to do things a little different without even thinking about it, when you are in charge things are different. do not forget this guy has turned down a DI job to stay committed to UND and Rich, the community as well as the player he brought in. i saw that herbst has been coaching a while, he has experience at different levels and schools in different regions of USA. i saw he was a head coach at a junior college and one as an assistant.... by the way i think that school won a national championship

  2. SW MN State fired very successful women's coach Kelly Krueger after last season (I never did hear why), and now after one year, fired his replacement Mike Power link, apparently in large part because he had asked several scholarship players not to return next year. I can't recall a school firing its coach, and then firing the replacement one year later.

it seems to be trouble down there, maybe they need to look for quality and not so much head coaching experience. a lot of coaches in the NSIC and NCC will be looking at that job if they are not scared of the mess that has been created. I would think they would look to the NCC first, look at your top schools and the seasons they have had.

  3. The Sioux women have the makings of a real dynasty in the future.  It's going to be fun.

I would not call it a dynasty, Yet. It has been a while since they have been back to the dance. Win a couple of more national championships and then it's well on it's way.

They seem to be working hard on finding players, but they have had some duds in a few of the recruiting classes. If this recruiting class holds up and the current freshman class, they will be led by strong junior and senior leadership to make a serious run.

Don't rule out this year either.

  4. Why are you guys making this out to be the biggest deal in the world?  It happens all the time in football.  I can recall numerous athletes who have made verbal committments who have changed their mind.  It also happens in college basketball as well.  Verbal committments mean absolutely nothing now a days.  Until your signed sealed and delivered, your free game to everyone else.  Some athletes use verbals are bargaining power to other schools as well.  Especially if schools with higher prestige don't recruit them until later on in the process.  For example, are you going to chose Minnesota Law school over Harvard Law school just because you give them your word before you actually started?  Of course your not.  C'mon folks, lets get real.  Thee only reason why its such a big deal is because its NDSU.  Had it been Minnesota or some other d1 school, you guys would be happy for her.

Also comparing committing to marriage is absolutely ludicris.  We're talking about college sports versus spending the rest of your life with someone.  Let's get real.

True it does happen in other sports, yet it does not show clASS or respect. As far as it being another school I don't think this is the 1st time women hoops has delt with this. It is a bigger deal because it shows who is trying to stay local and not be big time and come up short and then come back to the local kid to save their clASS. Most of us fans like to see kids stay local -
