  1. There isn't anything special about Arizona Juco basketball. Lot's of juco teams from North Dakota have gone to Arizona and competed very well. I'm sure they aren't anything better or worse than the kids who play at Lake Region, Williston, or even Wahp. Science for that matter.

They played 2 teams from North Dakota last season and beat both.

  2. UND 1880 (80)------thats pretty good!!!

    NDSU 1277 (110)

    USD 1120 (123)

    SDSU 2394 (61)

number in () is attendance ranking

Those are all good considering there are 319 or some # teams.

Next years home schedule should be good, however I am hope we can be competitive.

  3. I don't know much about the other Great West programs, but USD should be pretty good since their best player (Hegge) sat out last year with an injury and is now back. I think they also got a pretty good transfer from Iowa State, although presumably she has to sit out a year.

UND should be more balanced in scoring than we've seen in a long time, since for so many years it seemed like one or two players--Kimbrough, Langen, Boese, Leighton, etc.--would be the leading scorers by far. This year, there should be several players at or very near double figures, and I don't really see anybody averaging more than about 12 ppg.

I think alot will depend on how good we are in the post, if we can be a threat in there we have some shooters, Bagaason and Youngblut can both be very good from outside. We may be better defensively than we have been for a few years. Is Ledger healthy ?

  4. I think official practice starts friday. The ladies have a very tuff schedule before the holidays the record may not look so great. I think 6 or 7 of the teams they play were in either the NIT or NCAA's with Arizona State being in the elite 8 and Ball State having beaten Teneesse. Should be some great games here in Grand Forks, I would expect close to sell outs for Green Bay, Wyoming and Ball State with a little marketing, those are great teams to be bringing in.

Has anyone seen any of the true freshman on the floor this fall ?

I would expect Bergan, Bagaason, Youngblut, and either Ledger (if healthy) or Sharkova, and either Lof or Seay to be the starters. Smart should be able to give Bergan a break this year. Is Privratsky going to be ready to go she showed some nice promise last year.

I would think the Great West should be very competitive and will add alot more intrigue to the second half of the season.

Who do you think will be with us at the top ?

  5. For those of you coming to the New Jersey/New York City area for the Sioux basketball game against the New Jersey Institute of Technology this Winter, here is some info. and websites that should be helpful. Newark Liberty Airport is about ten miles from the NJIT campus which is about one mile from downtown Newark. You should give yourself AT LEAST one hour due to traffic. If you are looking for reasonable hotel prices, the town of Parsippany is only about 30 minutes from the campus and has a wide variety. Newark has a very nice museum, two concert halls--Newark Symphony Hall and NJPAC, and the Prudential Center which is where the New Jersey Devils(including Zajac and Parise) play. PLEASE be careful about where you walk around the city--it is not Grand Forks, but it is not as bad as it was in the 60's. Maybe Minneapolis and Saint Paul have some rough areas too. Just be smart and alert and you should be fine. The follwowing are some websites with more information--

Looking forward to the trip in February, haven't booked flight yet, planning on taking a few extra days and see the city. Does the train go from that area down into the city or do we need to find a hotel down in the city.

  6. I would just like to thank the Spirit Lake nickname supporters and the council for their work and the resulting resolution.

I still feel they don't owe this to anyone. I believe that they are doing it for their own reasons. I still appreciate it all, regardless of the final outcome.

    Thank you, Spirit Lake.

I agree totaly, it time some group did what is what the majority wants and not bow down to a few in the minority.

Great Work Spirit Lake You are a Proud People.

  7. that was some of the talk I heard but my understanding was that it was going to be built way out by Target so not sure if that is still the case with UND's involvement.

Location shouldn't preclude UND from being involved, with the huge benefit of not having to fund the whole project this out ways the inconvience of not being on campus. Iowa State just built a new basketball training facility about 5miles from campus because of donors donating land there.

  8. What a tremendous schedule for a 2nd year transition team. It is actually a great schedule for any year in DI. The only thing I'm not sure about is how good of team are we going to have?

Ditto that, Looks like the kind of schedule any team would be proud, now we will need to have some girls step up with the loss of Kimbrough there will be some that will need to pick up the scoring and we will need to be able to defend in the post.

  9. I had hoped that we would have learned by now that the center from Lake Region (or some other talented recruit) had signed with us. Anyone know if an announcement is forthcoming?

I heard she was on campus for an official vist over the weekend. We need another big, I hope she can play.

  10. Seems there are some parallels between Mankato's women's basketball team and UMD's football team. Both were essentially middle-of-the-road NCC teams last year (although Mankato did manage to sneak into the regional and surprisingly advance all the way to the title game) who returned essentially their entire teams. I suspect UND and Mankato would have probably split had they played a home-and-home this year.

I don't think so, when was the las ttime the sioux lost to MSU. They would not have even won the NCC.

  11. A tournament is a crapshoot unless one has an extraordinarily dominant team. SDSU in their transition was so dominant it probably would have been DII champions every year of their transition if the rules allowed.

Some of the schools that transitioned right before or with us are doing extremely well in women's basketball. Florida Gulf Coast especially (#88), but also Seattle (178), Cal St- Bakersfield (148), and Kennesaw State (191) all would have very strong DII teams - according to the all Divisions Massey ratings. This year, UND women's (now #210) team seems to be peaking at the right time, as the early season travel has abated and the early difficult schedule has paid off as it seems they've learned a faster rhythm to take their play to another level. Those ratings show Mankato State (#170), Alaska Anchorage (#222) and Seattle Pacific (#230) as current DII favorites.

The Massey rating are something to spark discusion thats it: we would spank Mankato as we always did and we just hammered Seattle so throw those # out they really mean nothing.

  12. Many seenm to be forgetting that we are not playing in the NCC any more, there is a significant difference in the level of teams we are playing. I think the ball movement looked pretty good tuesday night. I don't see anyone looking to score too much, thats crazy, if an open shot presents it's self and it's in your range you better shot or don't be on the floor. The issue there is to know if it your shot and the game situation. Good Luck in Toledo.

Has anyone checked if this game will be available to watch on the net ?
