  1. Throughout the Doug Woog era, the U of M got to the postseason and choked, plain and simple, so let's not guess what might have happened IF they'd recruited out-of-state for the past twenty years, and simply remember what did happen. Grant Potulny of GRAND FORKS, ND scored two goals in the National Semifinals, and the game winner in the title game, and after waiting 23 years, the Gophers FINALLY got #4.

This statement is a little harsh. I'd say losing to Harvard in St. Paul was a choke, even though they were great team. Most of the years, if not all, they were beaten by superior teams. This may have been due to recruiting or coaching, but coaching is part of the team.

As for choking in regular season games at the old Ralph, god knows it seamed like it happened at least once a year.

The truly ironic part of things is that HAD UND recruited Potulny, I'd still be waiting to watch the Gophers win an NCAA title live.

  2. It would take some astonishing circumstances for NoDak and the Mavs to meet again before the NCAAs (since the only way it could happen would be the WCHA championship game) but maybe we'll meet up there.

Astonishing? I think it is very, very likely. In the 3rd place game.

  3. I think the Sioux were playing for the entrance to the NCAA's last night. Had they lost, they would have lost the DU comparison and been a lot more vulnerable in others. Now they have a lock on DU (win or lose today) and are in much better position.

  4. MN fans should (gasp!) be cheering for UW this weekend as well for PWR reasons.

Sioux and Gophers fans should not bother cheering for Bucky. If they swept MSU, they would become a TUC momentarily. However, after losing at the X they would fall below the threshold.

Although a Gophs/Sioux semi would be fun.

  5. I think it is easier for the fans at least. I know I wasn't too angry when the Sioux blasted the Gophs eight or nine to nothing to end the Gophs long unbeaten streak in '95 or so. Of course, that was before the five years of Sioux domination so I didn't have a lot of angst towards the Sioux yet.

  6. Sorry I wasn't more clear. I am a Sioux fan only! I am telling you that the Sioux will be the top seed wherever they go, stats backing us or not, because the season isn't over.

The Sioux will most likely need to win the WCHA tourney if they want to be a top seed in any of the regions. This is due to their RPI being somewhat lower than other teams with similar records. Reguardless, I think the Sioux have a great chance at getting to Buffalo. I just think that their best chance is to go through an Eastern regional.

Similarly, I think the Gophs best chance is to avoid CC at the Mariucci regional. Playing opponents that play their home games on regular ice would also help the Gophs chances. Especially if it is against a CCHA or HE team that doesn't play on the big sheet that often.

The way the brackets are drawn really does play a part in who wins the tourney. If the Gophs would have beaten DU in the WCHA Playoffs last year, they would have drawn Michigan in Yost and probably lost as well.

The Gophs last year in my opinion were like the '97 Sioux team. They had a great team, but the bracket really opened up for them as well missing DU and UNH.

  7. I think after the skating they did today, their best "chance" will come anywhere.  I'd have to say I believe they have learned what it's like to take one in the shorts.  I think with sagard's comments, we can tell that he is not a real Sioux fan, but more of a "the glass is half-empty" type of fan.  However, I think the Sioux will pick it up in the home stretch and finish the season out strong.  My feelings were stung a little on the loss to MTU as well, but I'm not counting on the Gophers to determine our fate.  I think we should all pull together and have a little Faith in our boys.  So, let me stress again, that I do have Faith in our Fighting Sioux, and that their best chance will come ANYWHERE!!!!  In fact, I don't like the word chance at all....not even in MONOPOLY ??? !
  8. I really don't think the Sioux will be in MPLS unless they get back to a top 4 PWR team, or the Gophs fall either out of the tourney or a #12 - #14 PWR team.

They won't put two WCHA teams against each other in the first round. I really hope CC goes to Michigan and some eastern team comes to Mariucci as the top seed.

As for the Sioux, I think they would have their best chance out east.

  9. The key for the Sioux is to get at least 3rd and avoid the likes of Mankato or Duluth for the play-in series. Forget about USCHO rankings, the McNaughton Cup, and all that stuff.

I agree with your entire message and apply the same thoughts to the Gophs. Great calculator above. Avoid 4th and you can win the WCHA playoffs. Play in the 4vs5 game and you will not.

I see UND and CC battling for 1st, UM and DU battling for third. SCSU and UMD battling for home ice.

  10. I swear the Guy on KFAN Radio is Happy from USCHO. DA and PA or what ever the hell their names are.

I had the misfortune of listening to the KFAN between the hours of 1100 and 1200 and at the end of the show they have Rube Rant. I have only listened to this show maybe two times but some Rube from MSP calls in and said once UND gets into the second part of the season there will be no Canisus to play and that they will be a medicre team probably middle of the pack of bottom of the league.

Are people really that stupid? Mediocre teams do not go 16-1-1 to start the season no matter who they play. If UND schedule is so bad how come MSU-Mankato beat both C.C. and UofM.

For christ sakes what are they teaching these people/rubes in school I am dissappointed UND hasn't got to play UAH two times. Are we to believe that UAH is better than Canisus. And do show me some stupid strenght of schedule right now it means nothing till the end of the season...

When will UND finally get some respect, I am not even saying we deserve to be number one. But work with me here. The UND team that got beat by UofM 6 out of 7 times was really young and UND gave the Gophers all they could handle. In Retrospect UND could have very well went 3/7 or 4/7 against the Gophers so, the argument that UND isn't very good isn't very accurate. UND hung tough with a team that was loaded with Upper Classmen. Same with C.C. we split with them and almost came back and won the second game against the Tigers in World Arena. I think UND is better this year.

So are UND a fluke I don't think so. Bring on the second half of the season.

Oh by the way. Has anyone ever met Happy? Flame away...

Oh yeah Merry X-mas and Happy New Year...

Goon, you are becoming what you hate most. An SCSU fan talking about RESPECT!

Anyone that has followed college hockey before '01-'02 has respect for the Sioux. The biggest problem is you live within earshot of your biggest rival who has recently tripled it's fanbase.

I'm predicting this years Sioux-Gophs war will be settled in a NCAA quarter at Mariucci. I think it will come down to goaltending.

  11. So maybe Blaiser threw the game against SCCC so the Sioux didn't have to play UofMichigan? So are we to imply that too?

I think throwing the game is too strong. He did play Kollar instead of Karl G though, which tells me Blais did not absolutely feel the Sioux needed to win that game.

Playing Kollar was a good call though, Kollar got big game experience and the Sioux despite losing ended up about as close as possible to repeating as champs.

  12. I think winning the WCHA is critical for the Sioux. '97, '00 vs '98, '99, '01.

Last year it was critical also, it gave DU the top seed and a date with Michigan.

The year before, it fed SCSU to Michigan and let UND go out east.
