  1. I think the funniest part of this whole UNDIA fiasco is the fact that "IF" this group was formed in 1966 souly for the purpose of "providing support to students who felt alienated from the community because of the name" and demanding its change.

It seems odd that it has taken over 40 years to move from a neutral stance to a "change it now" stance.

Even GK couldn't get enough of his klan members to vote for a change of stance when he was manipulating the UNDIA membership 5 years ago.

  2. I use to work with Tony at the El Roco after his goalie days. He was always a good guy and a blast to sit around and drink with after we closed the doors :silly: . Great to see him doing well today. Good Luck Tony

  3. hell, you might not have bacardio, you should have a bottle of bacardi on the bench though ;) works just as good as gatorade

That just might force me to change my plans

And no SAgard, there is only so much Bacardi in the world, and it would take ALL of it to make me consider a change of teams

  4. STOP THE PRESSES! Here's a good one...got a call from a friend today who works for a local TV station. CBS New York called to see if they had any "file footage of UND students dressed up like indians or wearing feathers or something... ;) "

The CBS Crew attended the UND/Tech game Saturday night thinking they would be waist deep in racist behavior but apparently they were disappointed by the LACK of disparaging imagery displayed :D

After the fact, they're trying to dig something up. They referenced "a guy dancing around in feathers on the ice" and my friend explained it was an honor dance occasionally performed by "certified" Lakota tribe members to a very respectful and appreciative crowd. The cbs producer/geek seemed "disappointed!" :) Actually asked..."so you don't have ANYTHING?" Tells a lot right there...

Kind of funny how no one is able to provide any concrete examples of blatant racism that is being shown to the Sioux tribes other than "a know a guy who knows a guy" type stories, except for a T-shirt (the old B*** the Fison) from '72 or '78. Over 30 years and nothing....

The only solid examples of racism come from GK himself.

Which in all honesty, if he does get on TV will be the best thing for the pro-name stance. He has already been doing wonders for the pro-cause, as he visits the other tribes, and speaks out against the name. Seems he doesn't make a very good spokesperson. Go figure..

  5. Belarus...whatever happened to them anyways? I enjoyed watching them in 2002, then they fell off the map. Wasn't there something about Nike donating uniforms to the country since they couldn't afford to pay for them?

And is it just me or do some of the uniforms (Germany, Italy, and maybe Finland) have screen-printed names and numbers?

Nike did all the hockey jersey this year. Compared to past years all the jersey look like crap...IMHO

  6. This column from canadaeast.com tells of an incident at a Canadian hockey game in which fans of an opposing team directed racial slurs against the visiting team's Ojibwa head coach.

Using NCAA logic, Nolan and all other minority coaches should be banned from hockey. After all, it's their presence at the games that caused fans to engage in racist behavior, creating a hostile and abusive environment.

Quite interesting on may levels... Ted Nolan is a great coach and did, still should be coaching in the NHL.

He is from Sault Ste. Marie, which is pronounced "Sioux Saint Marie". People from there say they are from the Sue/Sioux.

And Yes that mask is seriously sweet.

  7. EXACTLY. Maybe someday it'll hit you that the Sioux are more than a Hockey/football team. Maybe someday you'll see that we Lakota/Dakota/Nakota do not want UND to use us as their mascot. I'm not betting on it, but maybe someday you'll figure it out. hecetu.

Maybe day you will be able to distingish between "Vikings" and a football team. But since you are having problems with this whole concept let me help you out on a few present comparision.

    1) Florida Marlins baseball team or player, not too be confused with a Blue Marlins, which is a fish. A Florida Marlin is a human, they have 2 legs, thumbs, and breath air.

    2) Chicago Blackhawks hockey team or player not too be confused with the Blackhawk tribe of Indians, oh should have mentioned that. They [blackhawk tribe] do like that, they even gave the team the officail emblem. Though there are some very good Indian hockey players and coachs.

    3) Detroit Pistons basketball team or players, not to be confused with pistons from and engine made in Detroit. That ones tough, but stick with me here. A Detroit piston player, like a Florida Marlins is a human being, a piston made detroit is made almost entirely out of metal, unless of course, he/she is human and their parents conceived them in Detroit, therefore they would be a Detroit piston made in Detroit.

    4) King Kong, looks like a really big gorilla, but is really just a robot made for a movie. The director would like to you to confuse it with a real gorilla, but it not.

    5) Minnesota Vikings football team, not to be confused with a modern or medieval time Norse Viking. While both are humans, the medieval Vikings had a stronger defense, especially up front, and a quicker offensive threat.

  8. Go ahead and pick apart my words. I know that these are acts of desperation on your part. "the name is going to change and I can't do a damn thing about it, so I guess I'll just pick apart everything GK has to say, just to try to get under his skin".

I could care less what you think. The bottom line (which you choose to ignore) is the fact that the SIOUX Nation that you attempt to honor does not want you to use any reference to the SIOUX. How hard is that to understand? No one talks about that, unless you talk "polls", or a friend of yours who know a person who knows a native. Yeah, those are all skewed, I can find a friend of a white friend who thinks the name should be changed, too, so it works both ways. But the facts are the facts, and those facts are that we don't want UND to use the "sioux", or any logos depicting natives. Plain and simple.

In all honesty GK, you have taken this far beyond the "name change". You have been spouting your racial superiority over every culture, race, cred, and religion. Crying and whining about how everyone picks on you. And if people don't think the way you do, something is wrong with them. Because they aren't/aren't enough Sioux and of the Sioux you are the Great Chief and the mouthpiece of the Great Spirit. You constantly say you aren't respected because you are an Indian and therefore looked down on by others. You are not respect GK, for WHO you are, not WHAT you are.

You do this or you do that and that makes you that much better then so and so. Everyone else is just a wannabe Sioux. Jada Jada Jada. Considering all the traits that represent the Sioux warrior, Strength, Honor, Pride in the people, Devotion, Wisdom, and Spiritual Strength, I and many others who you have claimed superiority over, are more Sioux than you.

We don't preach hate, we don't preach intolerance, we don't preach superiority over anyone.

You see, you are no different then any other culture. Every culture has been knocked on to its ass, and had to pick itself up and accept the past and make the best of the present for a brighter future.

IF you really are Sioux and I don't give a rat's ass what you "tribal ID' say, then act like you are Sioux.

And yes, GK, I am one those people who are ready to change the name. Not because I feel it is demeaning to you, but because you have forever changed my image of a Sioux Warrior (for that I apoligize to all the really Sioux warriors out there) and the fact that the Spirit Lake tribe wouldn't take a stance at all on the issue when asked by the NCAA.

As my sensi would say, You have no honor.

It is horrible to say, but you GK, mako, KTF, have poisoned the image of a strong, proud race.

I am now strongly in the camp to change the name to Ojibwa, if the letter from the tribe is true, or to something Norse.

  9. lol. If you learned you history from history books, then you ARE misinformed. History calls Little Bighorn a massacre (yet we the Sioux were on the defense, they were there to kill our women and children, not just the warriors), they also call Wounded Knee a military campaign (lets see, take all of the weapons from the Lakota, then shoot them all including infants, yeah, that's something to be proud of).

If learning Sioux Culture is learned in our school systems or a video they show before each game, then you really need to find better sources. Hecetu.

When I read your posts GK, I realize Einstien was right, that there are no bounds to stupidity. [bTW, Einstien was this really smart white guy, I thought I would explain that to you since most of your knowledge of the white people comes from history books]

Most, but not all, of what I have learned about YOUR culture comes from Sioux tribe members. You see I grow up in Aberdeen SD. And with the Center of BIA and it proximity to numerous reservations we learned the history usually from members of the tribal councils. Now I can not tell you if they were "pure bloods", since those are the only ones who can teach about the Sioux tribe. But they did have a stronger grasp of reality then you do.

As for your examples above, you picked a couple of doozies. While I won't disagree with your assessment of Wounded Knee, that whole thing was a cluster-fu** and something that no one should be proud of, even if you consider that time and place it happened. Reminds me too much of the Baton(sp?) Death March of WWII.

But your Little Bighorn example has the coloring of a Hollywood movie, but that is to expect from you, since you believe only what you want and not what your elders state. But Little Bighorn was a massarce in a sense , (not on the same level as Wounded Knee), but that one side of the battlefield was completely destroyed. This battle is still being taught in military classes as what to do in battle and what not to do in battle. Custer attacked without knowing the situation (what not to do), and the Sioux tribes beautiful use of terrian numbers, and tactics. And according to Lakota Chief Red Horse, the women and children were taken prisoner until freed by some very pissed off warriors, not killed.

While I will not dispute the fact that history is colored by the ones that write the books, it is colored on BOTH sides. As many wise men have stated, truth lies between the two sides.

There is no black and white in history only shades of grey While atrocities happened on both sides of the fence, they have one thing in common, they are history. One should not live in the past, but should learn from its mistakes so as not too make them again.

  10. 80 years of "sioux" history....lol, why not try 1000's of years of Sioux history. 80 years of ignorance, maybe, but not history.

Exactly, who is try to erase the Sioux history. Not us, we are trying to insure it does become just history, but you are certianly doing a fair amount of damage to it. Thank God I know other Sioux, because if I had only you to go by I would say that all Sioux are racist xenophobes with a Napoleon complex.

  11. I think you're right. But regardless of who legally owns the Ralph, the NCAA won't hold any playoff events there as long as the logos remain.

Thats the part that is confusing... Does that mean ANY arena anywhere can not host a NCAA sporting event as long as there is any artwork/decor/statues that are of Indians? Even if the teams that call that arena its home field, have no Indian connections in name or symbol.

OR does the Ralph get a double standard put on it because it "use to/is" the home field of a team that does/did have a "abusive/hostile" name

Seems like there are many sports arena, all over the country, that have some type of Indian display. Are they being boycotted by the NCAA also?

  12. Never, well, not until the heads get ripped out anyways.

I may be wrong on this, but even if UND changes its name. The ralph won't need to remove the logo. It will have to change the "University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux" to whatever. But since it is not part of the univeristy itself, the indian head "decor" won't represent the University, won't have to be removed and will have no bearing on the University playing there.

  13. He stands about 6' 4'' and must weigh about 235lbs. Looks like a middle linebacker.

Ouch! Yttrium I hope I have said anything to make you mad ;) If so, I hope I don't might you in a dark alley, I really don't want my ass kicked :D:D .

Otherwise, I really do hope to meet you someday, your words and messages here have been very insightful (and I am not referring to your stance on the name change)

  14. Yeah, I'd like to see a picture of you. I bet you don't even look like a Native, so I can assume most people you met didn't even know your Native.

Words of the new North Dakota "Klan". Sorry sight.

Funny how my Indian, Mexican, and Haweiian friends are sometimes confused for brothers, since they look alot alike and they are all "Pure Bloods" (and not by just white people, so you can leave that right out GK).

  15. Yes, Vikings were of Scandanavian descent, but not ALL Scandanavians were Vikings. Now, if you look at the word "fighting sioux", that is all encompassing.

    Umm NO!

Sioux were of North American decent (actually Asian and European decent, but we won't go into that), but not ALL North Americans [indians] were Sioux.

As for the "Sioux Warrior". He/she still exists, if you don't believe me, look in the military, look on the front lines of the fire crews battling wildland fires, look at those Akicita who stand up for the people every day. The Sioux Warrior is here.

You are right, there are no "actually" Norweigians/Swedes/Fins in the Armed Forces of Norway/Sweden/Finland (We outsource that to India! What are you thinking), or on the line of the fire crews battling wild oil fires in the North Sea. The Vikings are here. (Suddenly I don't know if I am talking "real Vikings" or a purple football team I can't seperate the two, [oh the pain of my shattering self esteem])

But I guess you can't compare vikings and Sioux, because unlike those of you who "claim" to be a Viking, I bet you don't know your language, nor have you spent "any" time doing what a viking does. As a Sioux warrior, I have defended my people and still do today. I have provided for the poor and unjust, like a Sioux warrior does. And I also practice my Lakota beliefs, like a Sioux warrior does. Maybe I ride a Dodge instead of a horse, or maybe I shoot a high powerful rifle instead of a bow and arrow, and I have wireless internet over "smoke signals", but I am still a Sioux warrior. Take it for what its worth. Hecetu.

Well, unlike most Sioux, the Vikings were bi-linguial. They spoke many many languages including French, English, Dutch, Norwegian, Finnish to name a few, based on their terriory. And those languages didn't fade away, to be only spoken by a few. Maybe that is because we didn't mind if the people learning the language were of "Pure Blood" [Too use your, Harry Potter-ism]. But just for you...

    Kyss av taperen

I have provided for the poor and unjust, like a Sioux warrior does.

Suddenly you are Robin Hood... Please, we all do this. It shows you are human, yes also a Sioux Warrior, which is also a noble quality and one that UND and VIKINGS shows every day, but never the less human.

My boat may have fiberglass and hold 8 people rather then 40, I too shoot a high powerful rifle instead of a bow and arrow, I still do practice with a sword (not with shield or armor though) and I too use the internet instead of "smoke signals", but I am a Viking. But more then I Viking, I am a human being and a member of the human RACE upon the planet Earth. I don't feel necessity to place myself or my culture on a pedestal. And I see honor in people "wanting to be like Mike", most Vikings have "evolved" [maybe a poor choice of words, but "grown up" doesn't really fit either] enough to see this.

Take it for what its worth. Hecetu.

Now while you did state some things that are honorable about the Sioux culture, and while I thank you for your time in the Armed Service as I thank ALL Armed Service personal for their protection (Thank you Air Force One), I can't take your words for much, they do not mask your hate, low self-image or xenophobia.

  16. I've asked GrahamKracker a variation of this question two or three times. He never responds to it. I'd like to know why the NCAA thinks it's okay for my Scandinavian ancestors to be mocked and stereotyped, but not his? After all, the Fighting Sioux that UND honors and the fictitious Sioux warrior depicted in the logo no longer exist. So if I'm not allowed to be offended by stereotypical portrayals of people from my race who are no longer alive, why should he?

I also asked him on several occasions, the only thing I ever got was a sentence reply that said the Viking culture does exist and there are no longer Vikings.

Pretty close minded and a poor grasp on history at that. I wonder if the the Minnesota Vikings were forced to give a history lecture before every game, if it would help out his ignorance. :0

  17. If you look hard enough you will find racism anywhere, but do Native Americans have to avert our eyes not to see it? Renounce the UND mascot in the name of justice and harmony.

To fight racism, you must first remove the racist feelings from the person you see in the mirror everyday

The UND mascot promotes an environment that is hostile and abusive. Imagine you are a Native American who brings a son or daughter to
  18. I stand by my statement. Blais did NOT want Grant and the reason had nothing to do with his hockey ability or available scholarships. Ryan and Danny were not recruited either.

    Just to end this discussion:

My folks met Dean Blais for drinks after the Mankato series a couple years back and Dean's exact words were "Grant going to MN was our mistake, but Ryan going to MN was his".

Meaning Dean didn't recruit Grant hard enough, they figured a GF boy would come to UND so they didn't puch the issue. They did recruit Ryan quite heavily, but since he wanted to play with Grant, it was not going to happen.

This was also the issue with Irmen, that he wanted to play with Ryan. This and the fact that they didn't put alot of effort into the recruiting of Danny didn't help.

  19. So, this evening I'm up at our base exchange here at lovely Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, doing some shopping and since it's Sioux/Gopher week, I got on the Sioux gear. I'm standing in the T-shirt isle visiting with a co-worker and from the corner of my eye I see something bright. I turn to see this kid rounding the corner in a retnal burning blaze yellow Gopher Hockey shirt! He sees me and gives me a throat slash! Little punk. I returned his acknowledgement with a single finger salute and he leaves the building. I turned back to my co-worker and she asks what that was about, I said Sioux/Gopher week, it's a hockey thing. She was still confused but shook her head like she understood.

That is one of the most beautiful things I have ever read. Hockey rivalery love shown in its true colors half way around the world. :D

Keep up the good work AF, and thanks

  20. It isn't. I think Bacardio's been hanging around Gopher fans too long. ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence PCM ;):D

PCM, you, if anyone, would know this answer... When they canned the last manager of the REA, did the position get opened to the public, or did they have the position filled before firing the last jerk? My father wanted to apply for the job, but we never did see that it was open

  21. Come on Bacardio. You live with us, play hockey with us, etc... It's time to feel what the dark side of the force and do for you! Besides we need payback for Dean Blais and your a good start. ;)

I will never join you. Obi "Dagies" Kenobi told me enough.

  22. I am glad you don't write for the Herald either, with some of your quotes on GPL. I do think the Sioux have some leadership with the upperclassmen, and you obviously haven't seen Parise play much, because he has been nothing short of spectacular this year and the end of last, which hardly qualifies for the inconsistency you seem to imply by saying an NHL star one night and poor mini-mite goalie the next. But then again, you don't write for a paper and don't need to be objective. One thing we can both agree on however is that this should be some great hockey to watch.

And I hope your reading and comprehension skills improve a little before graduation. My quote states that I haven't seen much of the Sioux this season. Just because Jordan has played well at the end of last season and most of this season, doesn't mean he is the next coming of Eddie "the Eagle" Belfor. Jordan has been at UND for 3 years now, and has had good times and bad.

And yes I will admit, that a .925 S%(3rd in conf) is pretty good (Briggs - .917(6th) and Frazee - .872(12th)) it has been only 10 games and Jordan tends to be very harsh on himself and that is the greatest issue that leads to his inconsistent play (This has been talked about many times here on this board). Is he as harsh on himself as he use to be. I don't know, I HAVE NOT SEEN MUCH OF THE TEASM THIS YEAR. Hope you see that this time.

As for the leadership of the upperclass men, read some of the other game threads here on the SS board, you will see others saying the same thing. But that and combined with a talk I had with someone who is very close to/on to the players bench states that very fact. That and the fact that UND leads the WCHA in the one category you don't want to lead in: penalty minutes. With 255 minutes with 96 of that coming from the upperclassmen leadership and the top 3 penalty minutes belong to upperclassmen (Stafford-33, Smaby-40, Prpich-33). Causing your team to be shorthanded isn't the way to lead the team, at least in my book. You may see that differently, but you didn't feel like posting your thoughts, just critizing mine.

As most people who know me on this board and the GPL board know, I "fluff" my hockey talk, and while I am a huge Sioux fan ( since I attend UND for far more years then it should have taken me to obtain my degree and my father played hockey for the Sioux), I don't walk around with rosy-colored glasses on either.

Hope you have fun at the game, and wish I was there to see it with you. Prediction: (Hopeful) Jordan plays both nights, continues the "hot" streak, UND gets 4 points (4-2) (4-3) ;) More probably split 4-2 (UND)/5-3 (UM) :D
