  1. I find this whole thread funny. Last year during the conference season everyone was complaining about how the Ralph was too cavernous and that there was no atmosphere at the games. Sure, the Betty could have been built better with more seating, but that's the way it goes. Most likely the seats that were empty at the game had already been sold and there is nothing that can be done. Blame it on the weather, blame it on a Thursday night, whatever. The players and coaching staffs like playing in the Betty, it's a true homecourt advantage for them........to give up on the Betty now is a bit premature.

  2. It's a crying shame this game isn't on TV tonite. The two best teams in the NCC, a very crappy night weather wise.....be nice to see it on the tube. Good to hear there's a great crowd there despite the weather though! GO SIOUX!!

  3. I wonder how much, if any discretion UND has in terms of deciding where to play any particular game? For example, say it becomes clear that the Betty is simply too small to handle conference games. And further assume that the Ralph isn't available due either to hockey being at home the same weekend, or concerns regarding the ice. Would the contract between UND and REA allow for games to be held at the Al? I realize that brings up all kinds of issues (determining seat locations for season ticketholders, whether the coaches would want to have multiple "home" courts, etc.), but I see a day in the not-too-distant future when the Betty simply may not be the best option from a bottom line standpoint for several games which can and should draw well in excess of the 3800 (or whatever the Betty's true capacity is).

What kind of crowd is expected for Thursday night? Would it be a good idea to be there extra early?

  4. It's evident in the topic thread that this isn't related directly to Sioux hockey. If you only want to read about Sioux hockey, than don't open threads pertaining to other teams. Pretty simple concept.

Isn't this old news........like really old news, or did the players go behind Donny's back and do it again. If they are legal....more power to them.

  5. Yeah, I lived on a reservation for most of my life.  And I can tell you that "honoring" us with green wigs, Sioux Dogs, Siouxveniers, and SiouxSearch, is inappropriate.  I've been to the CRST, and you know, they have more going for them then many of the other Sioux reservations.

If its so piddley of an issue, why not just abide by the NCAA's request, and move on?  So many posts here "hate" Indians.  Read them, you'll see.

As for this campus, out of all my aquaintences here on campus, and I know more natives than anybody, I don't know of any Native Students that feel comfortable attending ANY games, (either you want the name changed, or if you go, those in your community might not accept you, so either way, your screwed).  So damned if you do, damned if you don't.

My bottom line is, If its honorable, why aren't the tribes behind UND?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Re read my original post and see if I wrote anywhere in there about "honoring" the native americans. I wrote about the opportunities that are offered here at this university to Native Americans and about the poverty and unemployment rates on the reservations, and I used one reservation as an example. Just yesterday a new tribal leader was elected at Standing Rock. In the article I read from the Bismarck Tribune announcing his election he pointed out that the unemployment rate on the reservation is 76%!! 76%!!?? 3 out of 4 people on that reservation are unemployed!! It looks like these reservations have bigger fish to fry than a nickname at the University of North Dakota. I hope these tribal leaders can focus on the real issues that involve the people of their reservation and resolve this issue.

  6. I have done a lot of reading on this topic and I have paid close attention to what has been going on with the NCAA ruling on the Fighting Sioux name. I have been a Sioux fan for all of my life. Growing up in southwest North Dakota I always followed the Fighting Sioux, even during the one year that I went to college in (cough) Dickinson (cough), I paid more attention to the Sioux than I did the Blue Hawks. When I got to UND last year, I was amazed at the number of programs that are provided to Native American students, and others who wish to study the heritage of Native Americans on this campus. I think this is something positive for the Native Americans on this campus and I think they would miss these programs greatly if they weren't offered here at the University of North Dakota.

This summer I worked for a company at home and one of my jobs was to go to Eagle Butte, South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian reservation and do a water survey that required me to meet many people, including the brother of one of the on-campus opponents to the Fighting Sioux nickname. After seeing the opportunities that Native Americans have here on the UND campus (which outnumber the options they would find on any other campus in America), I was completely appalled by the way of life on that particular reservation. I'm not here to knock the way of that community, but to simply inform. The situation on that reservation is similar to the situations on the reservations of North Dakota. Poverty and unemployment are rampant. While some people there work hard, some people live for "the check," and that's very unfortunate. It is my belief that this way of life is like this because there are no opportunities for these people on the reservations. More needs to be done by Tribal leaders on all reservations to enhance economical development to provide jobs for the people who sit along the street during the day waiting for "the check". Tribal leaders need to work right now to improve the way of life for the people they represent. I have a hard time understanding how they can piss and moan about a nickname, which many, even Native Americans find as a point of pride, when there is so much to do concerning poverty and unemployment on their reservations. I know this has been brought up by some people, but I wanted you all to know what I've seen first hand. I hope the tribal leaders realize this and take this to heart, and I hope that the NCAA realizes the problems on these reservations and let's the elected tribal officials do their jobs, instead of tangling them up in a nickname controversy. LONG LIVE THE FIGHTING SIOUX......the people and the nickname!

  7. Good for Mary. They will do just fine in the NSIC. I transferred this year from Dickinson State University and I missed yelling "F*&# You Mary" at the football games. It's good for Mary, but DSU is gonna miss a great rival.

  8. GrahamKracker,

I respect your right to disagree.  After all, this is America.  My basic argument has been North Dakota high schools.  I am curious why the Lakota people would be outraged over the use of "Sioux" when describing the University of North Dakota, yet not opposed to local high schools such as Stanton, Solen, and SRCHS-Fort Yates.  I do not understand the logic that the word is racist, yet will not only be tolerated at predominantly Native schools, but CELEBRATED there.

    Peace to you as well.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Stanton no longer competes in sports on their own they have co-oped with Center and they are the Wildcats. Solen has rennamed their school district and they are now Dakota Oyate. Standing Rock and Dakota Oyate both use native american monikers because THEY ARE NATIVE AMERICANS on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. I never got the chance to compete against the players from Standing Rock in basketball, but I did get to play against Dakota Oyate and Mandaree. They took pride in their nickname and they acted like real gentlemen......they were some of the finest players that I played against in my 4 years at Rhame High School. If they can take pride in their nicknames, I'm sure the vast majority take pride in the fact that the University of North Dakota is a dominant school with a nickname that honors the Sioux tradition.

  9. Has anyone heard who the Sioux are looking at for next season or beyond? There is a junior in Bowman, ND by the name of Peyton Tivis who is averaging 26 points per game this season and has passed 1,000 points. He's a very athletic guard at around 6'2" and is lights out when he walks in the gym. Anyone heard of anybody else who could make an impact here in the next couple years?

  10. Do you guys realize that these players are "Students"..Its frustrating to read the opinions of a few...Nobody wants to win more or tries harder then The Coaching Staff, and Players...Coach Glas is currently , 10 wins away from being the all time winngest  Mens coach in History..He will break Coach Gunthers record next year and Gunther is a LEGEND!..Maybe we should just buy our Tickets, watch the game as entertainment, which it should be and relax...I really enjoy a double header B-Ball Games...better than any movie

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'm glad that you enjoy going to the games, because to me it appeared that everyone else at the Ralph this weekend was held there hostage. We have possession in a tie game against Duluth and there was no energy in the arena!! Kudos to you for taking interest.....let's hope everyone else does.

  11. I see the University of Mary is considering a move to D2, BUT, only if they can get a conference. I read in the Bismarck Tribune that there has already been one conference out there touring facilities. Al Bortke (Mary AD) made it perfectly clear that they wouldn't join without a conference. I'm not sure Mary would be a good fit in the NCC YET, but they are a perennial national playoff contender in NAIA, and they have good proximity. Another good NAIA school to look at is Carrol College in Helena, MT. Dickinson State has a good football and track program (defending national champions), but they are lacking in other sports.

  12. If it was broomball, gentlemen, I'd be interested.  However, those of us who grew up in southwestern North Dakota know that hockey didn't exist until about 1992 out there.  Sorry, I'll hafta pass.  :0

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Southwest ND rules!!!!!! You're right, people are usually born with a basketball in their hands down there. Wish I could help, but sorry!!! GOOD LUCK AND GO SIOUX!!!!
