  1. That would be my question as well.

Whatever the definition, it is total speculation as to where these kids will end up. I would say that it is far too early to make that kind of determination. I could provide a number of things that each kid needs to work on, to move up in the world of hockey, based on what I have seen from them so far this year but I don't think that is a good thing to do on a message board. They are in a good program and have excellent coaching, especially with Mark Bry - a former Mr. Hockey and Junior "A" defenseman. If they have the work ethic and improve they should have a future beyond high school hockey.

While I have been reading posts on this thread for quite sometime, I have not felt the need to comment until now. You, --- are obviously delusional if you feel that anybody playing hockey at RR is receiving "excellent coaching" especially from Mark Bry. If you were to poll players (past, present and parents as well)

you would find that most have zero respect for any of them and agree that those men could take the best players in the state and destroy them by the end of the season. The team that won state last year did so not because of them but in spite of them and I have heard the words ''egotistical maniac" used to refer to Mark Bry who is probably still pissed he never went anywhere in hockey.

  2. I would think McIntyre has a very good chance of catching on with a D-I team. Portage has a decent program and a number of their players have ended up in the WCHA over the years. Is he good enough to be considered by the Sioux? I have no idea as I have not seen him play since he was in high school. Good luck to him - I heard that Jake Vigen is going to play in Portage this coming year.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Jake Vigen is still in the tryout process for Portage and will hopefully be playing for them

this coming year, their pre-season exhibition games start tomorrow and go thru 9/12. Jordan cannot play for a month because of his shoulder injury. Good Luck to them both.

  3. Just one clarification, Jake Marto has never played in the elite league or done any other

extra hockey. Also although it is very true he is a great athlete in GF it will be very

interesting to see how he holds up against some real competion. From what I have been

hearing about the Showcase with the exception of turning it on a couple of times he was

hardly noticeable, and I am sorry but I have to agree with J Loos comparing him to the

Moorhead and Warroad boys I just think they are far better hockey players and from

what i understand that was evident when Mn and Nd met for a pre showcase game in

Buffalo. I also have heard that although Mn expressed early interest in Marto, after

model camp I think that interest faded and I don't belive they even wound up making

    any kind of solid offer.

  4. very true, i have played with vigen for a long time and he is not worthy of all this talk about being hte best defensemen in the state. I think he was probably the third best defensemen on our team this year behind Hill and Galbreath. Vigen has made some of the dumbest plays I have ever seen. Feeding a forechecker in the slot on a powerplay breakout shoud not even happen at the bantam level, yet Jake Vigen manages to do that in a varsity game against White Bear Lake. He makes a few big hits and other than that is horrible.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Sounds like you are probably the horrible one and pretty gutless i might add, that you claim to have played with him for a long time and yet don't identify yourself and

joined this forum just to rip on the kid. Either that or you are just plain jealous. I can assure you there has been plenty of dumb plays made by several Red River players including Hill, Galbreath, and I'm sure yourself. I'm not saying that I agree with Loos saying he is the best D in the state but I would say he ranks right up there. I guess

the teams that have scouted him know far less about hockey than you do though. I

have watched Jake play many times and think he does a great job, I don't know him real well but I have friends who do and they say he is a great kid, we all wish him well.

  5. to JackMickelson...

Adding to your list of Under rated players...

Eric Galt-  This kid doesnt get enough credit, if any.  Last year he was an unknown, and now I believe he could be the best defensemen in the state, behind Marto.

Tyler Klein-  As a sophmore its difficult to get recognition unless your putting up monster numbers.  He has a nice chunk of goals and from what I hear is on the number one line on a stuggling Fargo North.  Hopefully they can pull it together.

Ben McClean (spelling?)-  This kid can be fantastic, leaving opponents baffeled when they walk away empty handed on what would usually be a routine goal.  I watched him against North and he stood on his head in the final few minutes, only to let in a lazer to a previously mentioned under rated player Nick Klenow.  Maybe this is why he is not given the credit he deserves, his consistency.  Who knows?

Tom Campell- I havent heard his name mentioned too much around these rooms and I question, why?  This kid can score with the best of them.  He has deceptive speed and nice hands.  He could work on his d-zone coverage, but he's in high school and most high school forwards are focused on scoring.

Who do you think are the most OVER rated? My picks are as follows...

    1.  Jake Vigen-  Jake is a strong defensemen who makes the right plays at the right time... however,  I think you may give him too much credit.  I may say this because I dont like to give credit to a bigger player unless they really show me something, big guys get too much credit nowadays.  Anyway,  he has a great shot, decent hands, but is slow.  Don't mistake this for anything other than what it is; i think he gets too much credit.  I could go on with the Red River defensmen but I wont.

I guess thats all I've got.  I tried to find a forward from the east that was being talked up more than deserved but, I dont think the east has that problem.  I could talk about Willert but I havent seem him play yet this season.  The only forward given tons of credit is Paul Weisgarber, and its deserved in his case.  While I'm on topic, he's played fewer games than most of the state leading scorers and he's fighting his way back up.  I'm looking forward to watching him in the WCHA soon:)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I would have to disagree with your comments about Vigen, if anything I would say he doesn't get enough credit, comments I have heard from people is that he is a steady stay at home defenseman who gets the job done, I don't think there can be any arguement that he needs to work on his speed but to say he is overrated I think is a bit harsh, from what I have heard about the kid, he generated alot of interest from scouts while playing in the select program and the elite league and I think he was the only player from ND drafted in the USHL during the futures draft last fall. It will be interesting to see if he makes the team that drafted him.

To your list of overrated players I would have to put Marto at #1.

  6. South will always have coaching problems in that parents will be upset no matter what happens.  Wilson has not cut so many kids every year he ends up creating some enemies.  He is in a lose-lose situation, one I would never want.  IMO Wilson does an ok job, but no Fargo coach has shown any interest in going the extra mile for their probam.  It appears Pivetz is starting to for Shanley by helping to develop their youth program.  Personally I think Smith was behind most of South's past success, he developed some great JV teams - most of which ended up being average varsity teams.

Back to the topic the RR-Central game was pretty good.  Vigen hit a kid from Central harder than any hit I've seen this year - at any level.  Stadstad from Central looked pretty good.  I still wasn't real impressed with Marto.  I thought Vigen was probably the only legitimate D1 prospect, although he may be a step slow.

As far as South relying on one line this year - they are probably the deepest team in the state.  They have three pretty good lines.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree with you about Vigen, he plays a real solid game, but does need to work on his speed and that hit was beautiful! It will be interesting to see how he does in juniors, does anybody know if he will go yet this year or will it be for next season?

I would also agree with your comment about Marto.

    Published Wednesday, January 26, 2005

Paul Weisgarber had four goals and three assists to lead Fargo South to a win in Eastern Dakota Conference play Tuesday.

Eric Galt had four assists and a goal for the Bruins (9-7, 8-1 EDC).

Gary Stensgard had the lone goal for the Deacons.

    FIRST PERIOD: 1, S, Luecke (A. Campbell) 0:06. 2, S, Luecke (A. Campbell, Weisgarber) 2:09 (pp). 3, Shanley, Stensgard (Hurt) 4:18. 4, S, Weisgarber (Luecke, Galt) 7:43 (pp). 5, S, Weisgarber (Larson, A. Campbell)11:54.

    SECOND PERIOD: 6, S, Ramberg (Klebe, Balbey) 7:05 (pp). 7, S, Larson (Weisgarber) 10:20. 8, S, Weisgarber (Wurden, Galt) 10:32. 9, S, Towers (Spriggs) 12:47. 10, S, Galt 14:45 (pp). 11, S, A. Campbell (Weisgarber, Galt) 16:06 (pp).

    THIRD PERIOD: 12, S, Weisgarber (Galt) 3:13 (pp). 13, S, Grande (Kotchian, Doeden) 16:54.

SAVES: Shanley, Bottrell 10-20-0-30, Traynor 0-6-9-15. South, McLean 3-2-0-5, Deichert 0-0-5-5.

South dominates a bad Shanley team.  I remember some Shanley guys saying that they were going to be a force a couple of years ago.  Looked like numbers are really down.  Too bad I remember watching some good Shanley team in the 80's.

Weisgarber is now back 100% and their top line is very quick and dangerous.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You have got to be kidding me!! All this......it was Shanley for GOD'S sake, a good

bantam team could kick their ass. I also think it is time to add Weisgarber to the "Not

    GOD" list with Marto.

  8. I would agree with Loos about adding Vigen to the defenseman list, he is great at getting

nice low shots on net from the blue line, keeping the puck in the opponents end and

getting passes out to the forwards. As far as who is the best player in the state Imo I

would have to say no one player has been totally dominate, Weisgarber and Willert are

definitely good players but I didn't feel either one of them was a huge factor in their

games against RR. The Schaefer/Mihulka line has come up big for RR in several games

and as far as who is the best team in the state I would have to say that definitely is yet

to be determined, playoffs should be very interesting........

  9. The game didn't go to OT, Minot won it in the third period....

I expected a little bit of a let down after they beat Central and Bismarck High so handily the previous weekend.

PS: I don't think that Weisgarber is the best player in the state. He wasn't even really that much of a factor in the RR-South game the other night... :0

  10. Haven't visited the sight for awhile but am glad to see some hs discussions going on.

Very happy to hear someone has finally said out loud that Marto is not god, nor is he

the whole central hockey team, not saying the kid isn't good for nd but d1, come on!

Watch moorhead and warroad play and you will see talent that belongs d1. In response

to comments about rr and their defenseman, i do believe they have the only player

in the state of nd drafted in the ushl and he is a defenseman. I do agree that rr needs

to be more disciplined but they do have some good players on that team, i believe

everybody has played each other once and now it is time for round 2, it will be very

interesting to see the results. also i personally like hearing jloos' comments, and i think

with the exception of moorhead he provides a pretty unbiased opinion.

  11. I happened to see the semifinal game for Great Plains team this weekend. They won it 5-4. Some good hockey. Did anyone hear how they did in the championship?

i saw all three of great plains games this past weekend, squirtcoach is right, it was some

good hockey(a lot of stunned people that great plains made it to the championship). the games being played this weekend at elite nationals in new hope consists of two teams made up of players selected from all the regular teams (none of the nd kids were selected). the rosters as well as the other teams participating are posted on the elite league website.

  12. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! FOR AS MUCH TALENT AS THEY SUPPOSEDLY

HAVE IN FORWARDS I THINK THE EFFORT IS PATHETIC. I THINK THEY ARE SEEING

WAY MORE EFFORT FROM THE DAKOTA BOYS (FORWARD AND DEFENSE) THAN FROM

THE MINNESOTA BOYS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES FROM MOORHEAD!

  13. THEY WILL BE SHORT A LOT OF PLAYERS IN MADISON BUT I THINK THEY ARE GOING

TO GET SOME ADD ONS. I HOPE THEY CAN START WINNING SOME GAMES. IT LOOKED

LIKE THEY WERE GOING TO BE A REALLY GOOD TEAM AT FIRST BUT WITH INJURIES

AND ONE OF THE GUYS BEING SICK AND ONE QUITTING THEY SEEM TO BE STRUGGLING. PLUS I THINK THEY NEED SOME OF THEIR FORWARDS TO STEP IT UP

    A LITTLE.

  14. sorry i pissed dmt off by creating another thread on this subject. is there anywhere

to go to discuss hs hockey? does anybody have a resonse to my question on the

other thread about great plains this past weekend?

  15. the great plains elite roster is not accurate. there have been a couple of changes

oakland and halstenson are definitely not on, vigen was put on in halstenson's spot

and there is no longer an alternate on the team. they supposedly are going to update

    the roster soon

  16. i have been following your conversations about vigen and saw the recent comment

about the great plains team. i have a friend whose son is on the team and vigen

replaced halstenson on the team. the website has just not been updated.
