  1. There was another Sioux connection to the National Tourn in PEI. Former Sioux player Devon Fingland recieved top honors for being the top defensive player for the tournament! Good to see that she is still lighting it up. Even though she isn't wearing our colors anymore, she was always one of my favorite players and still is!

  2. It was a big deal at the time, but it probably hurt the program in the long run. Hopefully we can attract a great coach who can bring in some talent and help the program.

It was a VERY BIG DEAL, being underestimated...? I don't think so, they had played well the first game that weekend, but goaltending got the best of them. Then the next game Maggie was very solid between the pipes and they took it to them. They played a tight checking game and put some doubt into UMD's game play. It was a big deal...and they had a very talented team! Not sure what you mean how it hurt them though.

  3. SIOUXYOU, you are absolutely right. Jessica is a classless, two-faced, remorseless and backstabbing person. Rivard only wanted the best for everyone, but with people like Kovacevich "working behind the scenes" against her own coach, mocking Rivard's coaching style and speeches, all while supposedly serving as captain of the team, how much can be expected of Rivard?!

Jessica needs to GROW UP and leave Rivard alone. For all Rivard did for her and everyone on that team, its absolutely sad that she does not even have respect for her, no less the audacity to hold a sign like that in the arena. That is a disgrace to the womens program, the Englestad arena and UND in general.

Jessica, look in the mirror and decide again which person should be changing; because it's not Rivard.

I couldn't have said this better myself!! Thank you...she was very vocal about the fact that she got rid of her high school coach and was going to take Rivard down too!

  4. Siouxfan44 makes some very good points, but I don't agree with a few comments. Regarding the girls that were cut being able to rival the current team, well that's a slap in the face to the girls who are currently playing. You have to remember that most of the first and second year teams were walk-ons, and I can see the hard feelings that would happen because of money and lets face it - skill. Yes, more have been cut but would most of those girls ever gotten a chance to play D1 hockey anywhere else other than a team that had just started up and had limited scholarships. I know of two girls that NEVER should have been cut that are both D1 material, but can honestly think of no others.

Also, playing D1 hockey you would expect a certain standard of physical fitness to be attained by the student/athletes. They all knew that they had to run the 5K at the start of Sept. How many actually came in shape and how many didn't. They were told they had to keep attempting the 5K, (once a week I think) until they could. Should they not have been able to right from the start - if they were committed athletes?

I whole-heartedly agree with everything else on the post. I have to wonder, would the university take action in any other sport after such a poor showing? I can't see it.

Another thing that makes me think that they just don't care what happens with the team is they haven't kept any stats on the fightingsioux.com website. Yes I know you can some stats on the collegehockeystats.com site, but they haven't got the category leaders, plus/minuses...

Oh no, now I've started!! And let's cut our starting goalie just before Senior's Night, and just before we have our first round of playoffs. And just to cut the other leg off their players, instead of flying to Wisconsin for that series...let's drive, because the coach can't fly in her last trimester of her pregnancy!! You think the girls will be tired from the drive...oh well that's okay, we don't expect to win anyway!

    End of rant!

  5. At meet the sioux Sarah Connelly and Melissa said they were not going to play because of eligibility reasons. I think that their absence contributes to the women's losses but it is only a minor factor. The freshman class is a strong year, but for some reason two players who have gotten a lot of points, or created a lot of opportunity (Alyssa Johnson and Samantha Bowers) have been put back on Defense? Then one of our strongest defenders (Devon Fingland) was put to Forward? It seems as though the absence of Johnson and Samantha on forward have made an impact on how many points we get, as the Wooster sisters can't do it alone. I'm sorry I sound so negative towards the women's program this year, but it is hard to find a positive in their preformance thus far this season.

Thank you for saying what I've been thinking all along...firstly that Bowers and Johnson put a spark up front and Fingland has a great capacity for seeing the ice from the blue line and setting things up better that running around up front. Also leaving Jessica is the only vet defenceman we have right now and that doesn't help much either. Wouldn't it be nice if the coaches listened to us, and I bet we'd have a win this weekend!!

  6. I didn't start this thread as a gossip thread about the Women's Hockey team.. Let's stick to how they perform on the ice.

We're not talking about who they are dating or anything! Just what's happening and why they were missing. Everyone wishes nothing but the best for these girls. And since you "started the thread" I guess we should follow your rules!!! lol

  7. The ladies played great today...very impressed.  Funk, and Wooster sisters seem to be starting where they left off last year, which is a good sign for the team.  The freshman forwards are really stepping up and taking on important roles, or so it seems. The lone freshman D played well, but seemed to have first game jitters.  I noticed there were some girls missing from the roster tonight, do they have to sit some every game? I know Mutrie and Laplante are away for their second sport, however I was surprised to see Dianoski, Connelly, Girtz and Allan out, those four seem to play important roles for the Sioux.  Unfortunate Cutcliffe got ejected from the game, she's a dominate force in our D-zone, it must be frustrating playing girls half her size.  But, it is good to see they're tightening up on the checking from behinds after the Bina hit. All in all impressive night...I highly recommend all to come out in two weeks for their home opener.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I heard Dianoski and Connelly were red shirting this year for academic reasons

  8. OT and winning are two totally different things.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Give me a break Cratter!! You gotta be kidding, what a moral victory for this NEW team taking it to the three (I think) time national champs!! And how about that winning coach Shannon Miller and her staff walking away without shaking the hands of the Sioux players! Classy, eh?

  9. I think a huge problem on the team is coaching.  I know a few girls on the team and they have conflicts with the coach.

It does suck for the girls who started the team because we all know that the time the team finally starts getting better, they will be long gone.  Its cool that they all got to be a part of the first women's hockey team here at UND.

And who knows what will happen in the first game of the playoffs... stranger things have happened... I mean look at last year when they played the gophers (10-1) going to playing them to a 4-2 loss just recently!!!  If they are all there... there's no way anyone should underestimate them.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree...If everyone shows up and plays their game the way they can...anything is possible. Go Sioux!

  10. I don't know much other than the fact that I don't know much.

This said, I do believe that this is an NCAA "governor" on a new program, not part of any business plan.  Can't have the new kids growing too fast, too quickly, and beating up on the old sisters.

NDSWho is facing the same "step increases" as it moves to DI, albeit miserably so.

I am sure that the Sioux would ramp up the womens' scholarship offers now, but for the NCAA and its idiosyncratic and oftentimes archane rules.

Sioux will be a womens' powerhouse as soon as they are allowed to do so.  Rivard, and The Ralph, not to mention the great education, will be sure to draw recruits from the top shelf.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh, no doubt, once the scholarships are equal to everyone else's, God, who wouldn't want to be here. Everyone...I don't care who they are, are in total awe of this building once they step into the Ralph. Then if they get to take a peek before a game and see the facilities that are for the two hockey teams they are taken back again. Oh well it's just a shame for the girls who are building the program to be left out of "what will be".

    QUOTE(LuvHockey @ Feb 12 2005, 11:38 PM)

I spoke with Coach Rivard's husband a couple of weeks ago.

She is getting only 3 scholarships a year added, meaning it will take 5 years to get the number of scholarships that full programs can offer (18 I guess).  I do not know how many she has now.

So I suspect it will take 5 years to get the full complement of good players who now have to play for only partial scholarships, if any, to go to UND.  They will be offered full rides at other places...

Yet another NCAA rule that seems to make little or no sense other than to keep the proletariat in check for as long as possible before the womens' team rises up and dominates the world of NCAA Division I womens' ice hockey.

I don't believe this is an NCAA rule, but rather UND's decision based on financial/economic considerations.

What I understood is that this is not an NCAA rule, but the "business plan" requested by the coach when interviewed for the job of developing the team.  There is no reason UND couldn't increase these faster should they choose to spend the money now , not over 3 more years..

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I always thought it was a NCAA rule limiting the scholarships to the women's hockey team, but it what you say it true, well then - what gives? Why doesn't the university help the team out a little. It would only take a couple of scholarship players to help out on the ice and with team morale!

  12. How about the games this weekend against UMD?!?

Wow...fast action both ways - even outshooting the Dogs! They proved that they can play with the nations leaders! Still room for lots of improvement - Penalty Kill. But with a much smaller bench they did fine. Great games! Amber stood on her head, and the defence really held their own.

  13. We rocked that game! haha

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Don't be too hard on the girls...they learned a lot from the series! They did very well when the 3 Olympians weren't out there, so we know Coach Rivard is starting to put something together. Too bad they had to start out in the WCHA against the national champions...I hope the fans still come out and don't give up on the team.
