    My review of Nashville.

First, sorry for all of you who didn't get to go, or chose not to.  It was a blast, despite the outcome of the game, and despite the somewhat rainy weather on Saturday.

With respect to Nashville itself, I'd definitely check it out if you are a music fan, especially a live music fan.  However, I'd recommend a visit in the middle of the week when the crowds are much smaller down on Broadway, but the music is just as good and plentiful.

The locals hate Broadway, and now having observed Friday and Saturday night, I can see why.  Traffic is impossible.  Forget about trying to get any service in a bar or restaurant, and I saw, at a minimum, a dozen people hauled off by medical crews after having literally drunk themselves into a coma.

But we arrived early Wednesday and had a great time Wednesday and Thursday.  Tons of great music and different venues in which to watch it.

UND did itself proud with respect to its showing, despite the outcome of the game.  No other college hockey fan base will pack in what must have been 14,000 or so fans for a game.  Apparently there was some trouble getting in the front gate, but we got lucky.  We happened to be on the other end of the arena, near the country music hall of fame, and it took us four minutes tops to go through the vaccination check in, past security and through the ticket scanner.

I thought we had a very good showing in the park, pregame, despite the steady drizzle.

There wasn't anywhere that we went in Nashville where I didn't see a lot of people repping the UND jerseys and hats.  We went to a show at The Listening Room Friday night and the crowd had to have been 60% North Dakota fans.  Whiskey Row, on Saturday, where Tigirlily was playing, was 98% UND fans on the main level.  It was like that no matter where you were at, and it was cool.

The outcome of the game was obviously not what any of us hoped for, but it's early.  I don't think anyone expected this team to run through the season like the last two did, and honestly, trying to mix together fourteen players who have never played together with eleven or twelve who returned, you're not going to have a well-oiled machine by game seven, no matter who you are as a coach.

Finally, I'd like to apologize to the two UND fans that I met about midnight after the game.  I was walking back down to Broadway after driving some of the older members of our group back to their hotel, when I came across two guys wearing UND jersey's/sweatshirts literally face down on the sidewalk, unconscious.  One of them I was finally able to communicate with, and all he was able to say was "will you help me" but was unable to give me any details about where they were staying, whether there was anyone they were with that we could call, or anything else.  Ultimately I called 911 and the medics showed up.  I hope the unconscious one turned out ok, and if it was anyone from the posters here, or any of your friends or family, I hope there was not too much hassle for them as a result of their dealings with the authorities.  But honestly, leaving them unconscious in the street off Broadway was not an option.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Vegas.

Thanks for the trip notes.  I hope the two fans you helped are doing OK.  For us, Thursday was busy but not chaotic like Friday and Saturday.  Still, we had an absolute blast.  It was great seeing all of the green overtake Broadway.  Nearly all of the bands were excellent, as expected.  Saw a trio at the Acme Feed and Seed that was fantastic, think Stray Cats on speed.  The locals prefer Acme, I'm told.  The Stage had a great band Saturday night and the lady who sang the national anthem at the game came up on stage and sang and got a great response from the crowd.  We did several moonshine and bourbon tastings:  Old Smoky, Greenbrier, Tennessee Legend (at the Marathon).  Toured the Ryman, which was really interesting, all the history.

Game was fun, and I really thought the team was going to tie it up.  Agree with you, they are just not gel'd yet.  Lot's of talent and they will pull together.  Penn State was a bit faster than I expected, but I honestly don't think either team was at their best.  Some sloppy play and that's just the way it goes.  I recall the previous Vegas game was also a bit underwhelming.  To me, the New York MSG game from a pure performance standpoint is the best HoF game yet.  That was crazy good hockey.

No question, it's great being a Sioux fan!

  2. Rough game for the Husky, which is really all that was-  one rough game.  Doesn't change that they were a great team.  Many things went wrong for St Cloud (uncharacteristically bad D positioning, inability to get to net- only 6 SOG midway into 2nd??), and went right for UMass (very opportunistic, great D zone play).  Plus, after watching UMass dominate UMD in OT of the semi-final game, we knew they were going to be tough.  This was their year, and the result of years of prep work for that program.  Nicely done!

  3. I have a solution.  Actions during the National Anthem should be based on production, a point system.  Specifically for 2020/2021 season:

    1) Standing (FWD):  min 3 pts ES, 4 pts PPG

    2) Standing (DEF): min 2 pts ES, 2 pts PPG

    3) Kneeling (FWD and DEF):  min 4pts ES, 2 pts PPG, 1 Hat trick

    4) Standing/Kneeling, Singing, and wearing Fighting Sioux t-shirt underneath jersey (FWD and DEF):  you're good as is, just block a shot or two, maybe a nice open ice hit

    5) Standing/Kneeling, Singing, Correct Execution of the Greene Face Time to Camera Baybay, and wearing a Taz Boy t-shirt underneath jersey (FWD, DEF, Coach, Asst Coach, Ref, Media, Fan):  You win free autographed copy of my book, "Ladies:  Why They Love Me So"

All good!  Go Sioux and let's get back to business!!

  4. Hey Everybodys, just checking in here to see how things were going.  And, yeeeup, Hayduke1 still does not disappoint for sheer volume of idiotic content.  Let's see, it appears the bot's template is:

    1) Paste leftist MSM link

    2) Add weak, unhumorous insult or meme

    3) All Cap:  "LMAO!" or derivatives thereof to show self-gratification of #1 and #2

    4) Attempt to reinforce with unrelated statement of opinion presented as fact

    5) Finish with a forced generalization, such as "Cult" reference, or some other projection of the liberal left mindset

And it goes on and on and on, in various forms of course.  Maybe mix it up now and then, but the messaging is very much the same.

Meanwhile, it's good to see the southern states improving on infections and lower mortality, as predicted by many.  Let's hope this continues so we can get back to cheering on our Fighting Sioux en masse.

    Go Sioux!

  5. To cleanse this thread, here is a public service announcement from Taz Boy.  More of a homework assignment for the few of you that have some level of objectivity and intellect (you know who you are).  You'll need to suspend your political bias and just be curious, which for most anti-Trump "blue wave" types I know is impossible.  We get it, y'all want him to die of COVID or an HCL overdose.  Sheesh.  Just go vote for the pre-dementia, basement dwelling lifer politician that doesn't know the difference between his wife and sister.  Relax.  Here we go...

    Go to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

Sort the table "Reported Cases and Deaths by Country, Territory, or Conveyance" by Deaths/1M pop, highest to lowest.  Forget about San Marino, it's too small to be statistically meaningful.  Also, forget about #cases, #tests, etc as those are just game stats.  Loss of precious life is the metric, the scoreboard for humanity if you will.  In this sorted list, locate countries alleged to be "surging" by the MSM such as Columbia, Japan, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Hong Kong and compare them to the most well known previous hot spots like Western/South Central Europe (Italy, Spain, UK...).  While you are at it, look at the details of Sweden and compare to other peer countries.  Sweden did not lock down.  Higher death/1M but, not an outlier.

Now do this with the US States.  Note the deaths/1M for New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Louisiana and compare that to the alleged "surging" Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California.  Also, compare New York et al with any other country on earth and maybe ask yourself if the counts are accurate, then what kind of third world medicine is being practiced there?  Really dig further and see if accelerated exponential growth is evident in these southern states, or if it's just the natural course of viral infection having been delayed by normal seasonality along with decreased mobility, and if in fact Arizona is actually now in decline, because it is, as will be the others.

You cannot look at the US as a whole, just as you cannot look at the earth as a whole.  Look at population centers and understand how this thing moves, large population centers will all get their turn, tragically.  I fear for New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan.  There's no true second wave until you see New York, Sweden, or UK ramp back up again.  I sure hope that doesn't happen.  There are many arguments suggesting it will not, most notably history.  Go read up on Herd Immunity Threshold and what the real numbers actually might be based on other similar epidemics, the transmittance and susceptibility of coronaviruses.  Learn about T-cell immunity.  If you think >70% need to be infected, you are watching MSNBC too much.

Note that I only provided one link, worldometer.  I have many sources, and a few favorites.  But, go find your own and avoid anything that uses alarmism words like "surging" "catastrophic" "overrun" and all of the rest of that clickbait fear porn.

Based on what I've read, do I think this is a dangerous virus?  Yes, especially for the elderly >75, it appears to be significantly worse than the flu.  Keep them safe and away from any NYC hospital.  If you are >40, looks like you need to worry about heart disease and cancer along with COVID and can benefit by keeping in shape.  If you are under 40 you should be more worried about influenza or a car accident.  If you are under 20 and not destroying your lungs with vape juice, then bathtub drowning is more likely (especially you drunk fraternity pricks).  I encourage you to enjoy your young lives, be mindful of the vulnerable, and be confident that this too will pass.  Likely the first Wed in November.

OK, we've let this one go far-a-field for a long time. Call it a "steam dump"; blow off some steam.

What will not pass muster is obscenities directed at another poster. Period.

Disagree. Talk politics in this and only this thread on this forum. This is the one and only, small, sandbox here for that.

But if I see it keep getting directly personal and/or vulgar, well, I too am a "governor" of sorts and have my own flavor of "stay at home" orders to give.

No obscenities AND no vulgarities???  Tough deal for taz.

A few years ago, when UND played BC at MSG, Dave Starman commented how Jerry York was recruiting bigger, heavier players. Perhaps he might have more success with the smaller, quicker forwards that he had so much success with from 2000-2012?

Remember the 2010 title game against a loaded Wisconsin team and the smaller BC forwards (Atkinson and Whitney) were just dominating.  Although, BC did overall have some big boys out there, looking at the roster, the fwds really put on a show in the 3rd.

BTW: It was fantastic watching UND hand BC a loss at MSG.  Good memories.

I’m sure everyone knows I was referring to DU. I had a typo in there!

Yep, and they are very good for sure.  I was not as impressed with BC, big but not as fast.  I have yet to see UND play live but I'm thinking they will match up fine with DU.  Lot's of hockey in front of us so there's plenty to look forward to.

DU laying the beat down on Boston College. DU got another freshman goalie from Europe to replace Filip Larsson and this guy is a monster. 6’6” 216 lbs.

I was at the DU-BC game Friday night and DU is loaded with talent, very fast, controlled the play for the most part.  I don't think #15 Mitchell ever left the ice, and #24 Brink from Tonka played as expected-  fantastic.  His hockey sense, offensive skill and compete level are off the chart.  Very excited for him!

The UND-DU series should be a great tilt.

  10. Game was fairly pedestrian.  Two very different levels of talent, which is what the Bison typically have to deal with week in and week out being top in the FCS.  They need to move up into G5 FBS, in which they could certainly compete as long as the financials are there.

  11. New banners get a strong favorability rating from the SS echo chamber.  They certainly have Taz Boy giving the big thumbs up!  I haven't seen this kind of unanimous agreement since the overwhelming disapproval just after the unveiling of that awful Peace Dove logo.

Makes you wonder how much influence siouxsports.com has.  I mean sure other teams have historically accurate championship banners with multiple logos on them (Boston Bruins was mentioned here).  But, it does make you wonder if someone at the REA saw this thread and brough the idea up to the higher ups at the REA.  Who knows.  We may have had a part in making this happen!! ;)  Or maybe Mafia's 2 emails a day for the past 4 years finally broke Jody Hodgeson into ending the madness and shutting him up and making the change!!

    uuuuhhhmmmm...

    No.

Hey, @Taz Boy and those of you who love Fighting Sioux hockey and the old logo...I'm surprised I don't see some of your names in the "Mystery Raffle," as I'm certain you'd like one of the four prizes!

I didn't know about the mystery raffle.  Is beer one of the prizes?

  14. Hey Everybodys!  What a great gift for UND and fans of Fighting Sioux Hockey!!

From a quick read, it's no surprise to me that all the forum folks are strongly behind the new scoreboard and especially the retention of the glorious Fighting Sioux fixture in its traditional center-hung location.  And, I think we can all agree how important tradition is, especially preserving it for the University's premier sports program-  Men's Ice Hockey.  Furthermore, It's equally apparent that everyone continues to be embarrassed by the sight of the cartoonishly awful USPS er, "Hawk" logo, and are thankful it's relegated to a simple icon, occupying only the minimal percentage of that gorgeous high resolution display.  But, I must implore you all to please try to move forward, and embrace the new traditions that are to come with as little recognition as possible for that train wreck of a millennial safe-space gender mis-identified peace dove.

Go REA Big Screen and Go Sioux!!
