It's no longer "maybe".
Last year 5-10 was top half of heights; this year it's the shortest.
Who were the 5'8 defensemen? I'm getting this for our D last season based on the roster
6'5 (Kleven), 6'2 (Sidorski, Moore), 6 (Johnson), 5'11 (Farmer, Jandric, Frisch), 5'10 (Bast)

What they bring in as 8D will tell us what they think now of McInnis and Ausmus in a year.
Pehrson and Pyke --> Strathmann and Jubenvill (fall '24).
Bring in 8D as one year rental and it shows they're thinking Ausmus or McInnis will be ready.
Bring in a guy with more than a year left and it's a different story (and Ausmus and McInnis come fall '25).An 8D with two years left would not surprise me.
Not necessarily. Remember Hensler is accelerating, hasn't made a decision, and by all accounts appears we are very much in the mix. a one-year rental signals to me either they project Mcinnis or Ausmus to be ready OR they are feeling optimistic about Hensler.

Seems one of our pipeline has found a new skating guru (scroll, you'll find it).
As I said, a Boris disciple. Every kid I've seen that works with Boris has very, very good edgework.

I agreed with Sandy ("sure"). His dad was "Ethan's aunts" for him. Both came as strong power skaters.
But my brain wasn't thinking Sanderson because I've been watching this season's replays on Midco and Sandy is a Senator now.
Haha I get that. Last year is sticking out like a sore thumb right now. I do think with a little added weight and strength we'll be pleasantly surprised with how much more Blake and O-Mac can fight thru contact this year. We'll also be seeing some better skaters replacing those leaving (Perron's edgework is night and day better than any of the departing forwards), Livanavage is a Boris disciple...he's skating/edgework will be noticeable from day one.

Were they strong on their skates at the same time? Sandy, sure, but a 21-NHL-season dad had that in him when he arrived. Jandric, so so. OMac and Blake can make some jaw-dropping moves, but a stiff breeze knocks each over.
The flip side is I really haven't seen skating improvement in Kunz or Albrecht or Ness or Jamernik.
Schmaltz did get a little better year two; he got hard to move or knock down.
I'll be watching Strinden in year two for skating improvements.Omac and Blake getting knocked over is not because of edgework. O-Mac for sure needs to get stronger and Blake can too. Tough to use Frisch as the example because of his aunts, but then discount Sanderson because of his dad.
I can get on board with saying they need to be a better skating team across the board and maybe not seeing improvement in guys like Kunz, Albrecht, Ness, Jamernik, etc.
What I took issue with was that you said Frisch is the only above average skater we've had recently which was downright laughable.

I believe power skating needs to return to focus. The Ironman seems to be the focus of late. If that's the case, some power skating skills need to be added to the competition to make guys realize skating is as important as strength and endurance. It doesn't matter how strong you are if you can't get to the puck.
The only recent guy I recall with above average edge work was Ethan Frisch. He'd do an edge drill at the start of each period. He grew up with aunts who were professional figure skating coaches. Edge work. Power skills.
You don't think Sanderson, Jandric, O-Mac or Blake have above average edge work?! Just because they're not showing off their edgework to start the period doesn't mean they're not working on that in practice. You don't see someone turn on a dime to elude pressure like Blake does unless his edge work is exceptional.
Also, I think if you listen to Dylan James interview about how they had been working with him on staying lower thru his stride to create more power (and seeing a difference at the end of the season when he was blowing by people), it sure seems like this is still something being worked on quite intentionally.

What do you mean a foothold? Oshie and Nelson are the only ones that have came to UND from Warroad (Lee Marvin was another one). There has been A LOT of talent that has gone elsewhere from there. It's always been a neutral ground.
Might be a generational gap here and people that follow further back know it used to be a foothold. Marvins (Lee, Cal, David), Christians (Dave, Eddie), Al Hansleben.
Makes sense that there's been a shift with Hardwick at the helm and him being a Bulldog.

Now, please beef up the recruiting pipeline so we don't need the portal quite so badly.
This!.
I love our top end guys for this year (Emerson, Perron and the D) and the current Junior class (Boisvert, Swanson, McInnis). If we could land someone like Emery or Hensler (if he's accelerating) to that class this could turn around in a hurry. Of note, the only coach I've seen that Hensler follows is Berry.
For the Sophomores, have to hope and think we have a shot at the local kids at the NTDP (Laurila, O'Neil and Lindberg).
Edit: YHH confirmed Hensler is accelerating.

Lindberg is going to CC.
That’s his older brother. This one can’t commit until this summer.

He is a +1 in 14 games with 1 goals and 5 assists.
Thanks. That sounds much more like the player I've seen. He definitely passes the eye test to me.

Note on Benoit. Looking at his +/- is concerning, but definitely doesn't tell the whole story. I thought there had to be a data error somewhere as I can only count a couple times I've seen him on the ice when scored on for Waterloo. I realize it's the carry-over from when he was the top minute guy on a bad Omaha team. It's definitely more in line with what the Lancers +/- look like. I'd be interested to see what his is since joining Waterloo.

It’s embarrassing that I have to write this, but we absolutely need two more good D. One solid old dman and someone else that, at the very least, can plug and play. The frosh D are all good (maybe Benoit sits a bit) but they will struggle a bit. Injuries happen too.
I may be crazy, but I think Benoit is the guy that's going to surprise next year (the way Frisch did as a Freshman). Every time I watch him, he's just so steady. Makes great outlet passes, plays simple but hard. I could be way off, but I think his game translates well and could end up playing more than everyone thinks he's going to.

Yes Sandy was in that class too. My point still stands, but good catch.
Miller getting sent packing at the 11th hour also skewed this. That class was actually loaded with D.

Are you sure? There may be some truth to that rumor. We only recently get players from the NTDP that committed before they went there or they’re from the area. The U17 head coach (former U18 assistant) is from Grand Forks and has been with the NTDP for awhile. His father worked for the WCHA/NCHC at both Ralph’s every home weekend for 30+ years. Does anyone know why there’s not a positive recruiting pipeline relationship there? I find it odd with that type of connection that we don’t have a single recruit from the NTDP right now, last year, or hardly at all recently. Clearly the NTDP has taken over (from Shattuck) as the “honey hole” for top US born college hockey prospects in the past ten years or so. Located in Ann Harbor, they are the best thing to happen to Michigan Hockey in the past 50 years as kids love it there and commit to stay there. But Minnesota, BU, BC , etc have gotten their fair share of high-Enders from the NTDP and we have gotten 0 lately. (Unless they are from the area or committed before they went there). Does anyone know why?
The comment was that they are steering them away from UND; not that they aren’t steering them to them. They may not be actively pushing kids to us but looking at the last 10 years it’s hard to say they’re steering kids away from us (Ausmus, Thompson, Sanderson, kleven, Caulfield, Hain). I’m sure I’m missing some. I think a lot still has to do with geographically where the NTDP is getting kids. Still hard to talk an East Coast kid into wanting to come to Grand Forks.
if Laurila doesn’t end up at UND (and Lindberg if he’s at NTDP) that would raise a red flag to me.
I would actually argue during the Hak years it appeared moreso that someone was steering away. Seems like there were a ton of decommitments (not just to us) and bolting to the CHL.

That's a good point. Not to mention that Judd Caulfield played there too.
Played two seasons (2017-19) with USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP):
And Hain.
That being said, all four were committed before they went to NTDP, but the fact they all kept their commitments tells me that rumor may not have much truth to it.

If you watch the Steel highlights, a huge chunk of the Celebrini from Perron goals are Celebrini using his speed to get open and Perron finding him in space. To me, James looks like the most natural fit with him because he's the closest to that speed. Knowing James and O-Mac had a connection in juniors, I would love to see a James - OMac - Perron line. Then Blake - Schmalts - Gaber. That would be a pretty tough 1-2 punch.

Very good Sophomore defenseman from Moorhead. He was Laurila's D partner in Bantams (Laurila now at NTDP). His older brother is committed to Colorado College.

Lindberg got an invite to the NTDP eval camp.

I’ve seen that team play. They are very very good. Laurila is high end for sure…there’s a Lindberg kid that may have the highest ceiling though. Offensively dynamic, however on the smaller side. Both will be ones to watch moving into HS.
Agreed. Lindberg is legit. Like I said above, probably best comparison is Stecher. Unbelievable skater so his gap is always good, great stick, very sound defensively. High compete level and offensively dynamic like you said. He’s smaller now but grew quite a bit the last year and his older brother is 6 feet so wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being pretty good size.

Is his dad Tim that played for Michigan Tech?
Yup! Tim actually coaches that team with Matt Cullen. There are a few kids to keep an eye on there. Obviously Laurila is very very good, but Garrett Lindberg is also very good. Reminds me of Troy Stecher.

Sam Laurila from Moorhead got an invite to the NTDP tryout camp as a Bantam AA. He was up for Pee Wee player of the year in Minnesota and now up for Bantam AA as well. Hope we're in on him!

That's funny. Weird that there would be such a difference from the online roster. Hope the new guys don't shrink when they get to Grand Forks, too!
