For the three or four guys out here that like the 'NO' logo...Does it get old trying to polish this turd?

Not trying to polish anything.  Once you get beyond longing for the "good old days" of the Sioux logo and come to the realization that it is not coming back, you move on to respecting the traditions, cherishing the memories, and cheering for the University of North Dakota and its new identity.  If you replace the knee jerk rejection of anything that is not "Fighting Sioux" with an appreciative look at the new logo, you begin to see that SME did a remarkable design and produced a logo that you can be proud to display if for no other reason than IT IS the symbol for UND athletics and I will support UND and its athletics in any avatar they choose.  It is time to move ahead, because

............but the SME design is a "remarkable design" and completely unique as some have suggested.

Didn't say anything about "unique" but for those who believe the old logos were "unique" look at and compare them to the Chicago Blackhawks logo, the Washington Redskins logo, the Florida State logo, the retired Dartmouth logo, the Eastern Michigan Hurons logo, the AHL Springfield logo (which ahas an alternate 'geometric' design, and the interlocking ND of Notre Dame which has the 'N' behind the 'D' on the right instead of the left.  Unique may be in the eye of the beholder.

  2. A real hit!  They managed to incorporate elements from the old Sioux logos in a subtle way and came up with a real winner. Three feathers like the Brien and Blackhawk logos and the "N" is a tribute to the Geometric logo.  It is as "Sioux" looking as could possibly be done and at the same time it is the new identity.  I was hoping that they could find a way to honor the past while moving forward and they hit it.  Roll out the merchandise.

  3. In Brian Faison'sremarks about how discontinuing men's golf and baseball and a $1.5 million increase in revenue, the athletics department would meet its required budget adjustments.  How much of a ticket price increase will be needed to add $1.5 million in revenue?  Are there other revenue sources that I do not know about that are reliable and sustainable (that seems to be a revenue prerequisite if the baseball donation rejection is the standard), other than ticket price increases?  At what point do increased ticket prices turn an arena into an empty void like has occurred at Yankee Stadium?  The revenue thing struck me and I hadn't seen any comment on it so I thought I'd ask.

  4. If I recall correctly Vince Lombardi told his players their priorities were (in order) to God, Family, and the Green Bay Packers.  Do we really think these kids should be held to a HIGHER standard than that?

  5. A run-off between Roughriders and Nodaks.  The run-off will be won by Roughriders, largely due to Nodaks not being defined.  Since no one knows what it is, or how to define it (in terms of a sports team and logo), many will pick the familiar logo options of Teddy or a horse.  Others will now say that being undefined is what makes it appealing, but I'm not debating, just predicting :)

And North Stars is still the best name, IMHO!

Agreed - If Minnesotans are offended, too bad - you had a chance to use it and opted not to.  We will put the name to good use and make it famous.

  6. For a real naming controversy look into what the Province of Quebec is faced with having something like 8 locales that contain the "N" word in their names.  N Rock and N Falls are two I remember.  It seems that all of these place names were given as  memorials to runaway slaves and there is a real opposition to attempts by the Quebec parliament to change them.  Part of the population does not want to lose the historic connection that preserving these names ensures.  Calhoun, Fighting Sioux, and __.  It is amazing what can happen when context is ignored and decisions are made based on what is on the surface.

  7. Maybe the passing is not as efficient or the setting is not as precise so the opponent has more options in their attack.  Maybe the serve game is off a little also creating more options.  Maybe the block combinations have not completely gelled yet and are leaving too many openings.  The raw stats don't really speak to the nuances and not being on the coaching staff, I am not seeing exactly what the coaches are seeing.  Maybe it is time to start a "Fire Pryor" thread (that comment was totally sarcastic and I apologize for that, but will still leave it out there).

  8. that tom dennis rant could possibly be the dumbest editorial ever written...ever

It is totally insipid - we are asking our warriors to go to battle for UND and the beauty of the sky on a cold winter day.  I don't give a damn what Shakespeare had to say about sundogs it doesn't come close to Jon Casey spraying the front of his jersey with a water bottle and explaining that the warrior was fighting just as hard as anyone and needed a drink of water too.  That is what a nickname and logo should inspire - not a desire to stand in admiration of the beauty of an ice rainbow.

The stats say that Dooley and the team are down in blocks.  Last year they were among the nation's leaders in blocks.

The oother teams certainly try to avoid Dooley, but last year they know about her blocking ability after the first week.

Would help her numbers and the team if she could stay in the  rotation for serves.

help what numbers?  I haven't seen that she can kill out of the back row and she certainly can't block from there.

  10. All of these guys were/are very good and deserve a place in every Sioux football fan's heart, but I don't think your list is complete if Dean Witkowski is not included in the conversation.  He played in a 4 - 3 scheme and virtually covered sideline to sideline.  It was unfortunate that the teams he played on were not at an elite level (much like what Ratelle is experiencing) and his exposure beyond the faithful was somewhat limited.  I do believe he was drafted by Green Bay.

  11. This was a letter to the editor on why Boise St President Kustra was the most significant university Presidents in Idaho's history. Got me thinking that the next President of UND will be one of the most important in our history. Needs to be a politician, statesman, and leader before an academic. A subscription is needed for the newspaper, so used a Vandal message post.

He/her needs to take steps to further strengthen UND as a center of aviation and UAS technology and manufacturing.

He needs to further strengthen medicine in the state through UND.

Engineering and geology needs to be the go to place in the new ND West, with its expanding oil, gas, and chemical sector.

Needs to clean house where needed and install people of integrity.

Needs a new business and entrepreneur school to take hold and propel ND business even higher.

Needs to upgrade basketball and football, especially in the west like Bismarck and Minot and even Williston. Play an annual basketball gàme in the west vs one of the Montana schools.

Needs to broadcast the new name (hopefully Roughriders), and get people excited

Needs to put a vision out there so people can grasp what UND and the state can do together. Have him/her make a play that all North Dakotans are Roughriders, and can do greater things in spite of adversity.

The next leader is critical for UND.

The next leader probably does not have a chance in hell of succeeding, because we have created a culture of contempt for those in leadership positions at UND.  It will take until February 1, 2016 for the first "Fire -----" movement to begin and earlier than that if a student in a leadership position gets a parking ticket.

  12. I really don't understand the cannibalism that surrounds this university.  Fire Kelley, Fire Mussman, Fire Jones, Fire Hakstol, Fire Faison, Fire DiLorenzo, Fire the faculty that take an opposing stand on the nickname, get the nickname thing over with, but don't make a real decision.  Why anyone would want to take any position with this university is beyond my understanding, but thank God there are people who will try.  What was the last "Fire -------" movement that came out of NDSU?  For some reason they seem satisfied with their leadership and allow them to make decisions that have led to great success.  It's difficult to lead when you have to be constantly looking over your shoulder to see who is coming after you.

  13. I submitted:

    1.  Roughriders.   I think it's associated with the state and should be used for a nickname,

    2.  Flickertails.  I'm going to catch he// for this....but, I thought about it and I believe that it follows with tradition and is also representative of the state.

However, I am holding out for the Screaming Weasels.

If you are "holding out" for Screaming Weasels, why submit two choices, neither of which is indeed "Screaming Weasels"?

  14. Yah, I was being nice. The turn-overs are killers. The rebounding margin has dropped dramatically. It all adds up to a bad 2nd half. To be honest though, I'd rather win more games and lose by a lot compared to a team that wins MUCh fewer games (style points at best) but loses many close ones. Point margin gets you no where, W-L do.

Good point, the women have at least given themselves an opportunity to right the ship while the men's team leaves you wondering if they will ever be able to find a way to extend leads, make clutch baskets down the stretch, and finish games.  These are big issues and I don't know how you go about instilling or teaching these things.

  15. And I know they're technically "neutral" site games at BSC tourney but women have really struggled on the road all season so not optimistic about their chances. It seems like we've regressed the second half of the season, unlike some of the other teams who seemed to progress. Hopefully can turn it around but it won't be easy.

SEEMS like we've regressed?  I have seen lesser regression from a 5th grader with ADD.  This team has taken gigantic steps backward and the turnover situation has returned to where it was 2 years ago.  It would be tempting to institute a 15 second rule - when the shot clock gets to 15 whoever has the ball shoots before they turn it over.  At least the men's team loses close games.

  16. If I am not mistaken, this was a hockey game.  What did this sign have to do with events on the ice?  I don't appreciate people distracting from the actual event going on so that their petty little gripes can be aired in public.  I suspect that one of them got a parking ticket and of course that is the fault of the president of the university.  There is a time and a place - I'm sure the Dakota Student would be willing to run a letter to the editor, or publish an article if one of them wanted to write it.  This to me is just another example of the self-centered, entitled attitude that so many students exhibit, and another example of boorish behavior on their part (the moment of silence interruption at the last home series is another).  Be loud, be boisterous, be creative, but this is HOCKEY, not a political rally so don't try to hijack it for your own selfish reasons.  End of rant.

  17. This is so off topic now it's just another Mussman bashing thread (and we all know who's going to be next to chime in) But...If you expect results at DI then you need to find the money to fund DI coaches and resources. UND athletics made the decision to move up (with much pressure from alumni) and with that comes the responsibility to fund the resources to make it successful. Mussman accepted the role of being a transition coach, whether he knew it or not UND decided to go on a bare bones budget for football during the transition - perhaps because they knew from the history of other schools that attendance (and thus income), and recruiting would suffer. All the more reason to respect the kids who did choose UND during the transition (in all sports).

So now for some Mussman's legacy went from being one of the coordinator's of the national championship team to a failed head coach. Not saying he didn't have issues just saying that the transitional football coach position at UND was a no-win situation.

Unless the coach who had advocated so strongly for the move to DI had actually stayed on.
