  1. It seems that tall, pro-style qb;s with big arms are everyones dream. how may did we face in the thrashings we took this year? game managing, smart qb's are what we need. if they happen to be tall with huge arns....great. but not the first prerequisite.

True. But Jaques Perra is a near 4.0 student and has a VERY high completion percentage with the arm to take the top off the defense. In a Star Tribune interview, Connor Wilkie said he's the only QB they've ever allowed to audible at the line into different plays/formations. I'd say those two have it down between the ears. So why not take the size too? The bottom line for me is that I disagree with using the QB as a 2nd running back. One of the reasons Phillip Nelson just left the UofM. Too many big hit in an offense that wouldn't allow him to throw much.

  2. it will be interesting to see how well the new coaching staff can retain their scholared recruits. there at least seems to be a more committed mentality at getting more local kids. if you take a look at the whole picture, it seems one could field as good of a team if we have a higher percentage of kids that will give us five yeas and commit to our program vs. az, ca, fla kids that take a couple of years worth of our scholarship funds then decide, for whatever reason, that und is not for them. jmho.

I have always been a believer in recruiting locally first. But I'm a ND transplant and can say that the talent level here in MN at the average high school is much higher than in ND. I've been able to see a lot of the high profile seniors play this year and it's a little upsetting that we haven't done more with this class. If you look online, this 2014 class is loaded with FBS and FCS offers. Many of whom UND didn't offer (not saying they're missing out but when everyone else offers, we probably should too.)

Now..... as far as the QB spot goes, Connor Wilkie and Jaques Perra are the top two QBs in Minnesota. (Neither of which UND offered) Not sure if we offered either PWOs but Perra has a PWO from the Gophers and a scholarship offer from USD. So if you want to go the route of "No one else has offered so why should we?" you must also understand that there are many kids across the river we're not taking in.

Highlight film aside, both of these guys could play at UND and having seen Keaton play this past September, I don't think he is the top recruit at his position in MN. He runs better than the other two, but he lacks their arm strength. Depends on what type of offense Bubba wants I suppose.

  3. For all of you Connor Wilkie fans out there - he committed to play football at SW Minnesota State.

Seriously? What a steal for coach Sauter. Terrible decision on our part not to offer. He will probably be a 4 year starter in that offense.

  4. So when do you guys think our next commit will be?

I couldn't imagine a player committing to a school who has had a declining program and no coaching staff to recruit them as of late.

  5. As the SFI guys noted, this is a big weekend for recruits visiting campuses. With the lousy weather in much of the country, we might be getting a break with prospects not being able to travel.

I hope so. This is the first big weekend for officials and we have 0 recruits on campus. Same with next weekend if we don't have a staff.

  6. One option out the door today: Oregon's QB is coming back to school.

Honestly, other than Manzel (and even I think he might go back 1 more year) who will come early? I really think it will end up being 1 prize and that will be Bridgewater.

Heard that too. I am still hoping for Johnny Football. I wouldn't mind Teddy Bridgewater. But as long as Ponder isn't starting next year, I'll be happy.

  7. New dead period in recruiting this year. Kicks in just about the time we should have a new guy on the ground. I'm interpretting this as no visitation rather than no contact. I think there is another dead period that starts a week before signing day.

Still, this will hurt recruiting for us and yes, I'm still worried this year will be less than stellar. This doesn't give a lot of time for serious recruiting any more.

    http://www.sbnation....ing-dead-period

The bottom line, is that we need a new HC immediately. We can't let the relationships we've established with these recruits go cold. Nor can we risk losing other potential recruits due to no contact AT ALL.

  8. 2 per year may get a bit crowded, I'd say get 1 but I guess I don't know a lot of the "behind the scenes" stuff. Don't we have 4 on the roster right now? And the oldest will be Sophomores next season.

I wouldn't mind 2 either. One scholarship and one PWO. We definitely need help in the trenches. Wouldn't mind a couple JUCO DBs

  9. A healthy Rodgers over the last 4 games and GB is 8-3 at worst.

I hate to admit, but you're right. They're division record wouldn't suck as much either. I've never seen the loss of one player impact a team so much as Rodgers.

  10. I feel bad for anyone losing their job, but they will all find positions elsewhere. I think Kotelnicki should get a job on the new staff as well. Great recruiter and bleeds green. However, let us not forget how far back we were taken by this staff. UND deserved better. I'm hopeful for the future.

  11. Blah Blah Blah NDSU doesn't recruit. That's BS. Even Alabama recruits. So let's squash that.

As far as our recruiting goes, we need a new staff asap. Official visits are starting soon and many schools are already scheduling them for their top recruits.

  12. Too early to say it will be a bust. We don't even know who the new head coach is yet.

Agreed. Impossible to say if the class is a bust at this point. Come back and in mid-January with that take. Depending on who, and how fast the new coach is hired it may even boost recruitment.

  13. several of them have an unused redshirt, and those are the ones most likely to be welcomed elsewhere, since they were good enough to play early. There might be a couple, but I don't think it will be much more than you would expect from normal attrition.

They still only have 4 years of playing eligibility if they redshirted. And that means going to another school for 4 more years. Tough to do, but possible.

  14. I wonder if any players will transfer because of this. If so who?

I doubt it. If so, they would have to transfer d2 or d3, otherwise they have to give up a year. It's not as if this coaching staff was something to be coveted. They set the program back so far and dug a hole for future players and coaches. Maybe a few players have emotional ties to the coaching staff, but it seems far fetched that many if any would transfer.

I also heard some coaches may reapply for their jobs as assistance with the new coach.

  15. Current recruits will write-off UND or go into a holding pattern to see how it plays out and the new staff should be able to convince some of their recruits to follow them here and hopefully pull in some who were being recruited by the previous staff. Anyone know whether current offers remain valid? I know we have the one verbal commit, should he decide that he still wants to play for UND with the new coaching staff, is the new staff required to honor the scholarship offer? More of a curiosity deal, as I'm guessing it would work itself out regardless.

I think current recruits have written off UND into a holding pattern as it is currently....60 offers and 1 commit. lol

  16. I think Studsrud is the best athlete of the 3 QBs. Perra and Wilkie are fairly similar. I get why people really like Wilkie on here though (6'5" 200+, good arm, probably has good QB intelligence with his OC as his dad who is ALSO an alum.) But Perra has a 3.8 GPA, proven winner too, and though not as tall, has a pretty solid arm as well.

Depending on the offense the new HC and staff bring in, we'll know know on which of these 3 MN guys would fit best in their system.
