  1. Hope we can get this kid. His options at Minnesota would be to change positions or back-up Jones for 4 years(or 3 if he redshirts).

My guess is that Jones will redshirt because they alread have to solid RB's, play 2 years and bolt for the NFL.

  2. I don't know about specific examples because I don't care about NDSU that much but I know he has thrown more than his fair share of pick 6's sometimes early in games to put the team behind right away and I really think he is an average QB and good leader with a real good supporting cast around him.

As for asking who the Gophers beat in other posts NDSU beat an average K-State team with a lot of different players from the previous season in the 1st game of the year. The Gophers Nebraska, @ Northwestern, and Penn State wins were all better than that and the Gophers were a few mistakes in the redzone away from pulling an upset at Michigan State.

They were also very close to beating Wisconsin.

  3. I had high hopes for Nelson but he really never met them and was wildly inconsistent aside from the 4 game conference winning streak although much of it was due to the running game offensively. Leidner performed much better than Nelson throwing the ball and most fans felt he would be the leader to start going into the Spring especially after his strong relief appearance in the bowl game. I would expect Leidner to become a more consistent thrower this season as well but the Gophers will still strongly rely on the run especially if they are able to keep Jeff Jones committed and I would expect at least 6-7 wins next season and a chance to do more damage than that if Leidner can be consistent, the other key for them will be replacing a likely top 2 round pick in Hageman at DT.

High hopes? If my memory serves me correctly, Nelson as a true freshman that played half of last year and before the hamstring injury was playing pretty well. Do people seriously think a kid can come straight out of high school and dominate? Most kids get the opportunity to redshirt, learn the offense and build chemistry with the offense, Nelson got thrown in the fire as a freshmen and led them to a Bowl game.

  4. Have some examples of the team having to overcome Brock's mistakes this year? I am pretty sure I watched him lead the team on a game winning drive at a Big 12 stadium against a decent K-State team. Can't remember Nelson leading the Gophers on a game winning drive against any decent team on the road.

Then you obviously didn't watch much Gopher football this year. I don't follow Moo U, so I couldn't tell you if Brock made mistakes or not, but the K-State team they beat was average at best and got better as the season went on.

  5. Gophers probably would have beat NDSU by a couple scores because it would have been tough for NDSU to run the ball and Jensen doesn't win many games having to throw a lot. Jensen is like a worse version of Greg Mcleroy to me and has looked better because of the team around him and makes to many mistakes to be a NFL player. Leidner has a strong arm and has developed into a dual threat and will be a good QB for the Gophers. I think Molberg has potential and do know he had interest from those schools but also never got an offer although some would argue that Iowa only didn't offer because of his injury his SR season. Might be hard for Molberg to really see how much he has progressed because there very well may be less talent on this next Sioux team than last years.

Sorry to disagree with you, but Nelson is a better overall QB than anyone the Gophers have on the roster. Lieder may have a strong arm but couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. The Gopher fans better get ready for a 4-5 win season after losing Nelson and a few studs from their defense.

  6. Studsrud's motion is pretty similar to marcus Hendrickson's. Both baseball guys with a whip style motion. Like Marcus he spins it pretty well and can throw on the run. His motion would probably the easiest to refine. I think we should get him and Wilkie.

Bringing in both and let them battle for the job. Brilliant idea!

  7. In watching the film of all three qbs back to back I like studsrud the best. He's the shortest but is a very natural thrower and reminds me of a bigger Johnson from Montana. I still like Wilkie, I don't understand why/how his mechanics are so awful but if I thought about Phillip Rivers while watching Wilkies film it reminded me that a 6'5" qb can get away with a glorified sidearm throwing motion sometimes. Maybe he is the next Phillip Rivers? The kid makes accurate throws all the time. I wasn't as impressed with Perra.

I watched all 3 as well and feel pretty much the same way, accept I am not as big of a fan of Studsrud's throwing motion. The ball drops from shoulder height down to the middle of his numbers, then rises back up to complete the throw. Wilkie does have the Phillip Rivers like motion but the ball starts at shoulder height and moves upward to complete the motion. Perra's motion seems decent but didn't see too many highlights were he had to throw into a tight window, mostly jump balls for fade routes.

  8. I guess the question is, do you want a QB or do you want a RB that throws. Studsrud would be more impressive if he had statistically dominated against top competition, but didn't play any top ranked opponents. In the 2013 regular season he threw for 1270 yards and rushed for 540 against 4A competition. Perra and Wilkie both played 6A competition and each threw for 2100 yards, while playing multiple top ranked 6A opponents.

  9. Keaton is a good QB and I have nothing against him coming to UND, I am just more of a fan of tall pro style QB's. 6'0 180lbs could have difficulty seeing receivers past a big OL.

  10. it will be interesting to see how well the new coaching staff can retain their scholared recruits. there at least seems to be a more committed mentality at getting more local kids. if you take a look at the whole picture, it seems one could field as good of a team if we have a higher percentage of kids that will give us five yeas and commit to our program vs. az, ca, fla kids that take a couple of years worth of our scholarship funds then decide, for whatever reason, that und is not for them. jmho.

    Agreed!!!

  11. I wish him all the best at SMSU and am sure he will have a great career, but still would like to see him in green. From what I have read so far, there seems to be many that do not think he has the talent to play at the FCS level, but I respectfully disagree. Since I live in the Twin Cities, I attend many high school football games each fall (16 games this past season) and follow many kids closely. I am sure people would argue with my assessments, but there are many kids each year that I think we should offer that have not received anything from us, including a PWO and others that we have offered that didn't impress me.

  12. What if, by chance, they happen to be installing an offense that incorporates the QB as part of the running game? Such as operating out of the pistol 25-50% of the game and running QB power or read option at times, like many teams do these days.

Then you better bring in 2-3 QB's and be prepare for injuries.

  13. I'm not making the argument he should have been offered. I am saying I'm not dismissing his ability to play by virtue of his other offers, or lack thereof.

What FCS offers did Todd Kovash have? Or Kory Wahl? Or Phillip Moore, Shannon Burnell, or Jed Perkerewicz?

I would take every single one of them on this team. Today.

Couldn't agree more. If our staff isn't smart enough to evaluate talent on their own without looking at which other schools have offered, we are in serious trouble. Kovash and Wahl were excellent QB's that didn't get heavily recruitted but had great careers at UND. We need to be able to find kids that buy in and have passion for the program and fit the scheme. I am not trying to make a case for anyone, just thought a kid that has all of the measureables would be a good fit. By the way Otto, Wahl and Kovash were not great runners, but they did hand the ball off to guys that were and were able throw the ball to guys who could make plays. If we are concerned that a QB we bring in won't be able to move to another position, then we aren't looking at a true QB.

  14. When an FCS player doesn't get the FBS offers he's looking for we call him a "steal".

When a d2 player doesn't get the offers he's looking for it is "validation".

Do I need to start naming NCC players that would have been impact players on a national FCS level?

Maybe I am wrong about Wilkie, but a 6'5 QB that led the state of MN in passing as a Jr and Sr, a coaches kid and the son of a alumni......what's not to like?

  15. Seriously? What a steal for coach Sauter. Terrible decision on our part not to offer. He will probably be a 4 year starter in that offense.

I have to agree with you on this one, especially since he seems to fit what Rudolph likes to do on offense. I watched him play a few times over the last couple of seasons and not only are we missing out on this one, but coach Sauter will set records in D-II with Wilkie. IMO, there are a couple of other MN kids that we haven't offered that should be on the roster next season.

  16. Are we the only one recruiting these kids? If so great. Also, we cannot offer ever single player in the state that has another FCS offer.

Oh really?! Of course, but we can't afford to miss out on kids in the backyard. Go look at the NDSU roster and tell me that you can't win with ND,SD and MN kids. Muss and his staff spent more time in AZ and Ill than they did in MN. All I am trying to say is that I hope that Bubba is willing to battle for the regional kids.

  17. If you think 70% of our roster, or 66 players, are going to come from ND, SD, and MN then you better get ready to see a hell of a lot of losses. They could do it but the rest of the 30 players or so better be difference makers.

So you don't believe that there are enough athletes between the 3 states to produce wins? The 3 states combine for over 7 million people and the state of Minnesota alone currently has 35 kids with offers to D-I schools and that number will probably climb. I am just guessing, but ND & SD should have at least 10 kids, so that leaves roughly 50 D-I recruits. I don't see any reason why we can't pull at least 10 each year which would give us 50 on the roster. If you would like, I can list off the recruits in Minnesota that we have not offered but have been offered by the 3 schools to our south.

  18. Current Roster: Minn 24, ND 13, Wis 12, Ill 12 Iowa 3, Neb 3, SD 1 Mont 1= 69 or 72% of the 95 man roster.

You are seriously going to count Ill., Neb, IA and MT as our backyard? I consider a 250 mile radius as our backyard, not a 8 hour drive.

  19. From what I see in that map, our neighbors to the south are winning championships with players in our own backyard. In the meantime, we are running all over the country to find players in order to win a few games. Is there a reason that 70% of our roster shouldn't be players from MN,ND,SD?

  20. Got the first email from coach Schweigert today. Very impressive. He puts more heart into a simple alumni email than Mussman did. Basically he had three criteria for UND football players. 1. Great citizens 2. Great students 3. Great football players. He also said every decision will be made based of if it gets us closer to a title. Commitment, positive attitude, and self motivation are three other main points he hit on.

We're in good hands. Let's not take him for granted.

We are in great hands with Bubba and his staff. If they are able to get everyone bought in, we aren't as far away as some might think.

  21. That puts some good perspective on how long the turnaround process MIGHT take. IF next year is Bubba's first big recruiting class, it would be Bubba Year 4 by the time they're sophomores (assuming they redshirt) and ready to make some kind of an impact. Building, and doing it the right way, takes time. Naturally, we're all hoping for sooner and there are a number of things that could contribute to that, i.e, dropdowns, a few good JuCo.'s and the impact of existing players being coached up. My guess is that we'll be in position to challenge for the playoffs by year 3 or 4.

BTW, I think I read that we lost Adams. Was that due to his injury being career-ending or is he transferring?

Even though we have lost a few players, I believe that our current roster has talent and a few additions would help us be competitive over the next 2 years. I do think the playoffs are within reach by year 3 and conference title could come as soon as 4th or 5th year. Bubba might have a 4 year contract, but he will show enough improvement for a extension and hopefully a nice raise to keep him here.

  22. I don't think that this recruiting class will be as weak as some might think. Bubba probably has a relationship with some recruits and is working on a few other quality players. It may not be a huge recruiting class, but I think he will be able to work his magic and pull in some solid players. Ok, now you can go ahead and start ripping me for drinking the kool aid.
