Correct me if I'm wrong, but after listening to the 360 podcast with Herder, are these the key games today? Teams in bold we are cheering for.

Elon at Maine (7-0 Maine Q2)

    Montana State at Montana

    Furman at Mercer

    Weber State at Idaho State

    Any others?

I believe that even if Furman wins there are a couple other things that have to happen to potentially take up an additional at-large.  IIRC, ETSU losing and Furman holding Mercer to 16 points or less. If this is misstated, please someone jump in to correct me.

This sounds like the #ButtRPI argument that Bison fans make with regard to the Slummit. There are a lot of other variables besides PWR.

You may be right.  I'm no expert in either system, however, I did see a lot comments about how we were lucky to have such a system in place rather than a committee that can screw us over like in football.

Whether the Pairwise is a fair system can be argued, but whether it is objective and determines which teams get into the tournament cannot.  The second point cannot be said for the RPI in basketball.

We weren't in the Big10 conference in the 10 years that preceded it... we were in the former WCHA which was also a strong conference.

My bad. I thought you were distinguishing the national championship from frozen four appearances.  That was more side commentary though.

From an objective view, the rankings are similar, although skewed slightly higher to NCHC on the top end.

From a personal opinion perspective, I think we would see the Big Ten turn into a pretty strong conference with the addition of Notre Dame and UND.  I am happy with UND being in the NCHC, but I think games against Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan every year would be a great thing for our team and our fans.  I also think that Penn State shows a lot of promise in the short time they have had as a DI hockey club.

  4. If you compare an 8 team NCHC with an 8 team Big Ten (including UND and Notre Dame) objectively based on last years final pairwise rankings, I think the NCHC is still better, but it is not as lopsided as some might think.  Here are the rankings based on the app on my phone(including tied rankings):

    NCHC

    #2, #3, #6, #14, #17, #26, #43, #55

    Big Ten

    #3, #6, #12, #18, #22, #31, #40, #47

I understand the argument that the league made us more playoff ready, but I disagree with it.  The first two years in the NCHC, the results were similar to the 10 years that preceded it.  I think that if you consistently put together good teams and put yourself in a position to win, things are going to work out in your favor.

  5. Has the Big Sky Commissioner spoke out about this at all. If we don't get at least 4-5 all conference players this year I will say that the Big Sky doesn't care about UND and it's time for us to ask for better treatment from the conference. Don't give me you have to earn your respect because last year there were schools that had worse records than UND that got plenty of all conference recognition. I would hope the BSC is making some noise with the National Corrupted Athletic Association (which by the way would make a great sign).

The assistant commissioner was pretty vocal about it on Twitter yesterday.

  6. MVFC is the top football conference; not because of having the two best teams last year, but because of the best non-conference record this year.

You are correct that having the two best teams last year doesn't make every team top 25 quality.  Having 8 teams in the top 25 makes those 8 teams top 25 quality

I certainly wouldn't  argue that the MVFC is a stronger conference overall.  Unfortunately, the committee went out of its way with the WIU selection.

To me, it's not even about just western Illinois.  UND should have been safely in the field ahead of a few teams (including WIU).

I thought I needed just a day to vent, but it might be a 9 month recovery process .  I can't imagine how some of the seniors are feeling.

  7. I agree, we should be in ahead of a few other teams. This team was primed for a run in the playoffs. Maybe the committee saw that too and chose not to invite us. But, the best way to eliminate the politics is to win the winnable games and destroy the outclassed teams...show no mercy. We surerly got hosed, but we left the door open to get hosed. I don't think it will happen next year.

I disagree.  The NCAA did an excellent job scheduling two easy bus rides with Western Illinois.  With EIU there's um......I got nothing:)

  8. Sounds like a lot of arguing in circles here.

    Did UND get screwed? Absolutely!

Did UND put itself into being a bubble team rather than a easy in, by blowing leads to idaho st and weber st. Yes!

Ultimately, E Illinois has no business in the playoffs. Western really doesn't either, but UND could have done a lot to solidify their position by closing out those two games.

Good news it the team seemed to fix that towards the end of their season. Bet they have a BIG chip on their shoulder next season.

I agree with this.  Much like the last team left out of the basketball tournament, there are always plenty of opportunities that have been missed that said team controlled, but did not do what needed to be done.  I'm just a little bit grouchy about how a couple of the selections were made.  Overall I'm very happy with a 7-4 season.  I have had the outlook for a while now that it would only be a matter of time until we reached a consistent playoff caliber level. This team's future is very, very bright

  9. I already pointed out that EIU's argument for being included is not as good as 6-5 WIU's.

To be fair, I was replying to the quote where you said UND lost to the last place team in the conference and followed with "Ballgame", which is why we do not need to go any further than comparing our resume than to EIU's.

With regard to WIU, your comparing wins against WYO and Portland State to wins against SDSU and N. Iowa.  Those are probably pretty comparable, but I would take the WYO and PSU wins both on the road on top of the better overall record.

No doubt it is inexcusable to lose to Idaho State at home and that is the reason why we sit where we do today, but I don't think the committee was justified in making that decision.

  10. Beating Wyoming means you should be punching your ticket to the FCS playoffs?  UND lost to the last place team in its own conference.  Ballgame.

Well, we did beat the 6 seed on the road.  Perhaps you can point out EIU's most impressive win?

  11. So last night at my game, I asked a teammate of mine who played his college hockey at Arizona about ASU going D-I. He claims that ASU is putting the heat on the Wildcats to make the jump too for many reasons, not the least of which it would have a close opponent. From what he says, unlike ASU, Arizona already has a college hockey-ready arena in the 6,400 seat Tucson Convention Center, a devoted fan base, a strong hockey tradition and level of success, and is the third most attended sport behind football and basketball (this part I can't verify).

Before anyone picks apart my post, these are simply statements made by a buddy who went to school there. I cannot verify the accuracy of his claims but if true, I wanted to get others' opinions and thoughts about the possibility of the University of Arizona making the jump to D-I as well and what that could mean for the NCHC.

They would obviously be a great package add.  As stated previously, If Arizona is not imminently ready by the time ASU is (if) added, then could Notre Dame issues be worked out?

The follow-up questions that I guess I have are:

If so, then what would happen if Arizona becomes ready shortly thereafter?  Would we invite BGSU and continue building a stronger base around WMU and Miami and shut ourselves off to possible future expansion at 12 teams?

I do think Notre Dame would be a very good long-term addition to the league, as well.  There are multiple stories about how they would like to be aligned in a western footprint for hockey. I think their risk of flight would be very low as I don't think anyone can envision an ACC hockey league for the foreseeable future.  Also, the amount of exposure for the league would be very impressive if broadcast rights could be worked out as outlined by MACtion

  12. Someone make it green.  Or maybe just a green eye.

Game of Thrones crossover references could be abundant with either Wolves or Dire Wolves.....as long as we stay away from the sensitive topics of Ned Stark's demise, Rob Stark's demise, Catelyn Stark's demise, the Boltons, some of the less favorable moments in the War of the 5 Kings, and any other unfortunate event that is yet to befall the North ???

Seriously though, I do like the name.   :)

  13. I'm going to write a book here.

I've been thinking, the new name HAS to be wolves. What's the reason behind needing a new name? Branding. Merchandise. Selling stuff. Nothing brands better than wolves.

It sets the right mentality for sports too.  Aggressive, Cunning, Working Together. Kills our rivals.

    - Let me you howl

    - The Hunt is on.

    - Pack Mentality

No one is just Wolves. There is timberwolves, seawolves, wolfpack. Just Wolves. Think of the cool logo. The silhouette of this guys face with green eyes.

Best traveling fanbase in hockey? The pack is on the move.

It's pretty safe for controversy sake, but it the ways that it is controversial plays in our favor. Who hates wolves? People from our conference states, people from Wisconsin and Minnesota.

    All in on wolves.

There are not a lot of names out there that excite me, but I could get behind this.

  14. I am a little disappointed that this is the final deal agreed to by both sides.  However, in the end, what I think really matters is scheduling the game.

There are two very different perspectives on what this means with regard to how UND football conducts business.  The first is that we don't care about the program and that this will somehow set a precedent for every future OOC game scheduled.  I do not believe this is the case, but a one time exception.  The second viewpoint is that we are willing to be the adults in the room.  The rivalry is good for both schools and the entire state of North Dakota.  Childish tactics have created a situation and terms that boggles the mind, but UND is sucking it up and going down to Fargo to hunt some Bison!  If there is a perception difference that the two Universities are playing on two different levels, I think that perception is about to be shattered.
