  1. Did anyone read what Justin Bourne wrote on this topic? It was pretty well written and talked about a lot of the most contentious points in the argument. I enjoyed the read, especially coming from a former WCHA player who had the option of playing in either leagues. I'll edit this post shortly with the link to the post.

Additionally, the Bourne post brings up a payment issue and the fatal flaw with the NCAA's amateur status -- the CHL can corrupt is by having a player participate in a couple games at a young age. It's a damn sin.

    EDIT: The link -- http://blogs.thescor...paying-players/

  2. It's not the stipend that removes the amateur status from the kids, it's that they play against other "professionals". The NCAA sees the players who have signed NHL contracts but have been reassigned to their CHL teams as being "professional" players, even though they haven't played a single game in the bigs.

If you can put up with the legal jargon, this is a good read:

  3. He got arrested at a bar for using a fake ID, drinking underage, giving a fake name, and trying to flee from the cops.

Wow. Goddamn. That's quite the rap sheet. And all in one go.

    Thanks for the heads up.

  4. IMO if you can solve the CHL pulling kids out of college programs maybe it would be a stepping stone to getting the NHL to leave kids alone until they are sophmores or juniors.

The NCAA would need to make some changes to what constitutes amateur status for hockey in order to do this. That's the really big issue re: the kids choosing CHL over NCAA.

Worth noting that there is some talk of Hockey Canada, and therefore the CHL, working towards changing the drafting rules for the NHL in concert with the league itself. Some of the proposed changes would include altering the first round to being the only in which teams can draft 18-year-olds, or the possibility of removing their eligibility at 18 altogether.

There is some talk about the legality of drafting 18-year-olds, a lot of which I am foggy on, but have been doing a bit of looking into. I think it has a bit to do with the money paid back to the CHL and the teams for the players, but I can't be sure.

Another big issue is the blocking of "signing" money, something that is said to happen often for kids wanting to go play in the CHL. Rumours are abound that in the past teams like the London Knights have paid in the six-figures to have certain players come to the OHL, WHL, or QMJHL.

The whole NCAA v. CHL argument is so deep and there are so many problem areas that it's hard to say where you could even begin to start if you wanted to stop the CHL from taking the kids from the college ranks.

  5. The Score does a good job with it in Canada, and the games fly by with no intermission sans a short commercial break, but it's a little difficult to stay away from Twitter and this site to check the score when it's biting away at me. Knowing they have the streams available is a godsend.

  6. His line in the USHL doesn't look too poor, but EliteProspects has nothing on him.

And as for Seth Jones, that would be a serious get for UND. He may not be the absolute best defenseman available, but having a guy skip out on the CHL for the NCAA this day in age is something else. The NCAA really needs to do something to fix that.

  7. I guess I really should write UND, but that feels weird.

Anyway, this is my first post here. Been a UND fan for a few years now, just couldn't ever find a way to get into it. Born and raised in Winnipeg, they're pretty much the only way to go for NCAA fan-affiliation.

What I was wondering is, since I am out of the US/region and now live in Toronto, is there any way I can find live streams of the UND games? I've been watching the tape delayed games on Saturdays on the Score, but would love to be able to watch live. Anyone know a way?
