  1. Would be great to have Brad Berry as an assistant at UND, but no room right now.

Last years seniors would be his last recruiting class. This program needs to improve and replacing Eades would be a good start and imho had he stayed they program better off.

  2. I miss Frattin and Malone

along with the above, I think it will they will begin missing the likes of Trupp, Marto, and mostly Lapoint, who was really bashed on many of these posts. Mostly I think it is very evident how much the above players contributed to the success of team hockey. Dell will be exposed this year as he was tonight. Eids played some exceptional, but forgotten hockey his first two years when he didnt have help and blueliners they had last year. I see Eids picking up where he left off 2 years ago. probably the stronger goalie under these conditions. Dells weaknesses may be exposed more this year without the play of pony line, Lapoint and Marto and others. I think the assumption that Blood, Simpson, and Forber were going to be enought to match last years defense is not going to happen, yet. They do not do the little things we saw last year which are not fancy but so so important.

  3. did anyone notice the goals against where he was standing around and the minus 3 he is currently posting after 2 rookie games. seems like nothings changed.[

    quote name='Big A HG' timestamp='1310969332' post='510306']

This is straight from the Wild website:

"With eight minutes left in the first half, former University of North Dakota captain Chay Genoway turned in the play of the day -- beating all five Team Green players on a nifty coast-to-coast play that was reminiscent of plays the former Sioux defenseman made at Ralph Engelstad Arena. He capped the break with a pretty wrap-around goal to make it 3-0 with 7:56 to play before the break.

"We were talking on the bench about how much fun it was to get back out there," Genoway said of getting to play in more of a game atmosphere. "We're all competitive guys. Drills in the middle of summer can sometimes get tiring, especially when you don't have your legs. But when you're in a competitive setting, I don't think it really matters. That's what we're used to." "

They have video of the goal as well here: http://video.wild.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=933&id=120927

    It was pretty sick.

I wonder if Chay would have tried to sign with the Jets/Thrashers had he known they were moving to Winnipeg. I'm not saying he should have waited, because when you are undrafted in his situation, you can't get too picky or wait around too long for offers necessarily.

  4. Genoway is an excellent defenseman. In four plus years how often have you seen someone take the puck around him, past him, or over him. He is excellent with his stick and he sticks with forwards as they come across the blue line forcing them outside or else poke checks the puck away. I think that is waht he is supposed to do. He doesn't knock them over but he knocks them off of their route and you don't see the opponents get good shots because he either poke checks the puck or ties up their sticks. He gets the job done as a defenseman but his offensive skills are so much better than most defensemen, we overlook the fact that he is an excellent blueliner. I think if you told coaches from around the league or scouts people here think he is a defensive liability they would laugh. Most coaches would take 6 of him in a minute. His smarts, speed. quickness and stick handling skills tht make him so good offensively are also what make him an excellent defenseman.

Who is Genoway drafted by? I will bet any stock he may have had at the beginning of the year is no longer there. It's the reason he is back because there was not any interest last year, the year before, or the present. Don't think the scouts or coaches have missed him do you?

  5. Genoway was a +5 in the SCUS series in Dec, +3 against Robert Morris, +4 against Mich Tech playoff, and +2 against UMD holiday game. This is a +14 in 7 games. This leaves him a -7 over the remaining 27 games he played. It is only stats. He was also a +3 in the first game against Notre Dame which would leave him +17 in 8 games and -10 over remaining 26 games.

  6. as stated earlier 16 of his 32 points were on the power play!!

  7. agreed, the pk is several points lower than last year. Not sure why they took Lapoint of PK and replace with Genoway. With Lapoint and others without genoways services, they had the 4th rank pk unit. This would get genoway off the ice and get some rest, as he was on the ice for 4 of the 5 goals last weekend which landed him an award. They will need to stay fresh with RPI speed, keep feet moving and avoid needless penalties.

  8. I would hope that happens as well. However, there is no evidence from the NCAA's past that this should be a reasonable expectation. As of Friday, the job of recruiting for our football staff became much, much more difficult.

Will it still be hard to recruit when athletes come in for a visit and one drives thru Wahpeton, looking at a state highway sign for information and gets pulled over by a North Dakota trooper in the state called Dakota along the Bois De Sioux River.. Wonder if the town, highway patrol, or the state asked any Indians if they could use their name or image on their cars, signs, towns, rivers, schools etc It should be all or nothing. If the Sioux name goes away, then lets do away with all names related to any Indians state wide. Lets just do away with any image or names related to Indians and soon they will all be forgotten, history.

  9. Too much is made of Genoway's tendency to carry the puck up the ice and get involved in the offensive zone. He's an offensive defenseman, so I don't understand the issue. You can't expect to be that successful with six stay at home d-men on the ice at all times. Yes, the Sioux have better defensive defenseman than Genoway, but Chay's overall game at the blue line is very, very good. He makes plays, and I don't think he makes nearly the amount of mistakes in the defensive zone that people think he does.

I disagree, i would rather have frattin, malone, trupp carry the puck in the zone as they work better together than one of the 3 staying back while genoway is running around. I would take my chances with the lines working together deep and have the d step up when it is open.

  10. I whole-heartedly agree. MacWilliam and Blood are our 2 best Defensemen IMO. And then Marto and LaPoint. Nothing against Genoway, but he might be our 4th-5th defenseman this year. That says a lot to me about how good our D really is.

i agree with genoway (2nd team at best) in the lineup the team has to sit around and watch him dance with the puck up the ice. anyone notice the play of the sioux when they moved the puck up the ice as a team the past 10 games and how effective the pony line is without this type of play. was disappointing to see and im afraid we are going to see more of it. not a positive sign. I agree that blood has really turned his game around and playing a bit smarter and not always trying to make the big hit and being out of position. lapoint is also solid once again would like to see him on the pk more

  11. Its not a matter of being able to outbid someone. Its the fact that the NCAA will not allow us to host a home playoff game if we continue using the nickname and logo. That is why this is so damaging to the athletes. Add in the fact that we will start to see schools who won't want to schedule us because of this entire nickname-circus and its punishing the entire Athletic Department

We can schedule the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, Central Michigan University Chippewa's, Florida Seminola, Utah Utes, College of William and Mary Tribe, USC Trojans, San DiegoState Aztecs, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, to name a few. We can also schedule Univeristy of South Dakota, South Dakota State, and North Dakota State as the name of the schools are Indian names. How about Univeristy of Iowa, a university with Indian origins in both it's name and nickname. Iowa Hawkeye's will not play any school with an Indian Mascots, oh yes, this policy only applies to non-conference games. We can play Portland State Vikings which is among a dozen or so schools with the name Vikings. How about University of Bradley Braves which are located in Peoria, IL, now that would be three strikes against them, city, state, and nickname. Univeristy of NC- Pembrooke Braves or the Mississippi College Choctaws or the Michigan State which is among a dozen or so schools names Spartans. There are about 5 or 6 other school using Trojans.

  12. Chay has been a dynamic player for the Sioux his entire career.

I think the last few games he played in, he was on the ice too much and ended up beinng gassed, and then bad things can happen.

Look what happened to to UMD on December 30th, when they had their first line on the ice for the entire power play against the Sioux. It gassed them and they were un-effective after that, which was good for the Sioux.

No player will admit he is tried or that they are not ready to go. Time Management for all players by the coaching staff is key.

I think this team will miss Kristo but not sure if we will see him again. Coaching is the key with Genoway who is a plus 10 against three average teams (Robert Morris, SCSU, Mankato) which leaves him a minus 6 for the remaining 25 games. Needs to be used properly which comes down to coaching. We do get outcoached when 5 is involved. Hopefully they will get down to playing TEAM hockey and run the lines and use the depth this team possesses. Not sure they will get this opportunity to get the NCAA for a couple of years. Lots of talent graduating which has produced 58 goals and 76 assists from 7 seniors let alone other potential departures.

  13. Unsung hero of the week, and maybe season - Jake Marto.

After playing forward for much of the season, he steps onto D for the weekend, and comes out +1 Friday and +3 Saturday.

I have no idea how a guy can switch back and forth - between weeks, between games, and sometimes its been between shifts - and succeed like he does.

    I salute.

Should have had Marto and Lapoint together all year but coaches decided they know better. One week we have Simpson on the power play and then he does not dress for the Sat game. WTF? No need for more defensivemen when 5 plays half of all the shifts. Hopefully we are done with all this nonsense of putting 5 out fhere for everything. Not blaming 5, just blaming coaches for not utilizing the rest of the bench and overplaying an average defensemen. Will see a more balance TEAM. Hoping 5 will be out little longer for coaches to realize what they really have on the bench.

  14. Agreed on all counts.

Let's hope for good news on the Genoway injury front. As much criticism as he took the last two weeks, his play would bolster UND's chances of having a deep postseason run.

UAA at home is a must sweep. We've had our difficulties sweeping WCHA opponents at home...none since SCSU in December.

If we want to be positioned for the MacNaughton at the end of the season, four points is critical.

He is an asset if used correctly by coaching staff. D had 2 goals and 2 assists, killed off all 5 PK. Now coaching staff using players in correct positions and it shows. We left impressed.
