  1. Who said they were worried? Everyone has their opinion on who they think should play and where.

Thanks for coming to the site and reassuring all us weak-minded and worrisome regular posters that CC is a complete walkover. Without your guidance, I doubt any of us woulda made it through these tribulant times, oh omniscient one. :)

  2. I know it's popular to hate on Kelley at the moment, but I really don't believe we will revert back to the Flicker Tails. I love the Sioux nickname and traditions, it kills me to retire them but it would appear that we have no choice. The only people who can save us is Standing Rock and smart money says they have no intentions of doing so. I am clueless as to what nickname could even come close to replacing the Fighting Sioux moniker, it seems blasphemous to me to even suggest an alternative. I would be more at peace with the retirement if we would not choose another name and be referred to as the University of North Dakota or just North Dakota.

Good post, it just frustrates me too see all the out of state presidents we hire, with all the North Dakota talent that graduates from here, would be nice to see a local be in charge for a change, really miss Clifford!

  3. The drunkhockeyguy fiasco on PAs show today got me thinking, why all the hate?

Because the Sioux are consistently one of the nations best teams? Jealousy is an angry animal.

Because none of the other guys can get those 26 year old Canadian recruits? ;)

Because we won't give up on the BEST nickname and logo in all of sports!

Because NHL gms and coaches have nothing but high praise for the program? There's that jealousy thing again.

Or simply in today's world of twits and blogs and Internet anonymity... Haters gonna hate?

    Thoughts? Go Sioux!!!

    All of the above!

  4. Wow... just wow!!!

I agree with Siouxbooster#33- celebrate today (I sure am ) but dig in for the next round.

Proud to say I'm from North Dakota. They didn't let me down!

Mr. Jeanotte said a few weeks ago, what don't the nickname supporters understand about the word no, right back at you. I will say, you came here when the nickname was already here, if it is such a bad place to be, the door still swings both ways. I will also contend with enrollment up as it is, recruits still coming in with great talent, can't be to bad of place to be.

To the Legislature and Senate, thanks for your support, now Mr Govenor, sign this law and let's keep this moving forward.

To Mr Hakstol for speaking out, good for you! I would assume the locker room will be buzzing tonight, I know I will be sitting in the stands cheering on the FIGHTING SIOUX!

  5. I thought there have been two committees appointed. One to assist with the retirement of the nickname, and they other to help in the process of selecting a new one. My further understanding is that the latter committee was commissioned to come up with several alternatives. Did I miss something, or did I misunderstand what is going on?

I hear what your saying, I guess they can create all the commitee's they want, they did this with the Sioux nickname and you see where it went. When it comes to anything logical over at the U these days, I guess I'm pretty skeptical with what has gone on in the past.

  6. Since you have nothing of substance or value to bring to this conversation or agrument, you can have Jeanotte and the rest of his/your ilk help you off your glass tower.

Amen, if it's so bad here, there are other places to live, amazing how UND continues to succeed, take your 1% with you and start your own institution and see how well you do.

  7. Good post, but in response, the same could be said about what you just wrote. It could be said that you're missing the point, and the POINT of the University is education, not a nickname. These are vastly different perspectives.

The nickname was here long before these professors teaching here today, if it was so offensive to them in the first place, why work here? I believe it is still a free country we are living in, if they do not like the nickname, go find a job some where else if they are that unhappy. The vast majority that do like the nickname still pay taxes just like the ones that don't, I think you know where I'm going here?

UND University Senate votes to oppose bills seeking to save Sioux nickname

UND's University Senate has adopted a resolution opposing all three Fighting Sioux nickname bills under consideration at the North Dakota Legislature

By: Chuck Haga, Grand Forks Herald

UND's University Senate has adopted a resolution opposing all three Fighting Sioux nickname bills under consideration at the North Dakota Legislature.

The vote Thursday was overwhelming, with only a few members voting against or abstaining, said Curtis Stofferahn, professor of sociology and vice president of the University Senate.

An exact vote count was not immediately available.

The University Senate includes faculty, staff, student and administration representatives. Its vote against the nickname bills follows a similar action Jan. 23 by the UND Student Senate.

The University Senate resolution used language from the Student Senate resolution, noting that the university has begun the transition away from the nickname and logo, the bills would "only reignite the division over the 'Fighting Sioux' nickname and logo and further divide our university, the city of Grand Forks and the state of North Dakota."

Also, according to the resolution, there would be "unknown" costs to a potential new legal battle with the NCAA.

The University Senate resolution had included a clause from the Student Senate action concerning potential implications for UND's entry into the Big Sky Conference. Stofferahn said intercollegiate athletics representatives on the Senate said the nickname is not an issue there.

In various forms, the three House bills would direct UND to retain the nickname and logo. Two would mandate keeping the symbols unless a referendum at Standing Rock Sioux Reservation goes against their use. The third bill, sponsored by House Majority Leader Al Carlson, R-Fargo, simply declares that intercollegiate athletic teams at UND "shall be known as the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux," and authorizes the attorney general to consider filing a federal antitrust claim against the NCAA if it seeks to penalize the university.

The NCAA in 2005 directed all member schools to eliminate Native American nicknames, logos and mascots or face sanctions. UND appealed, then sued the NCAA when its appeal was rejected. A negotiated settlement of that lawsuit gave the State Board of Higher Education until last fall to win the OK of two namesake tribes, Standing Rock and Spirit Lake, to keep the Fighting Sioux name and logo. Spirit Lake voters and the Tribal Council there gave their approval, but efforts to arrange a vote at Standing Rock failed.

In April, the state board directed UND to begin the transition process away from the name and logo.

Stofferahn said he "was approached by a number of groups on campus" and asked to bring the resolution to the University Senate.

"They were concerned that, after the hearing on these bills, they thought the university community should be heard from as an official body," he said.

The discussion on his resolution "was remarkably brief," he said. "Compared to earlier years when we had this discussion, there was very little contentiousness. Even those who said they are ambivalent or even in favor of keeping the nickname said it was time to move on. It's too divisive an issue to keep hanging over our heads. They want it resolved."

One faculty member of the Senate called the nickname debate "a millstone around the university's neck," Stofferahn said.

He said he has sent copies of the resolution to members of the House Education Committee and members of the Grand Forks legislative delegation.

The Education Committee heard more than eight hours of testimony on the bills Jan. 26 and may act on the proposed legislation later this week, the committee chairman said.

    Shocker!!!!

  9. I am from GF and now live in the Boston area. I wear my Sioux jersey with pride when I attend Hockey East and Bruins games. It's amazing how much respect Bostonians have for Sioux hockey and the jersey. I will be at tomorrow's night Beanpot wearing the Best jersey in all of hockey!

    Fighting Sioux Forever!

    Nice!

  10. no, i'm not surprised and like i said i expected to get blasted by people; but when we all know he lost his shoe in a snowbank taking a short cut you start to wonder, especially with all the run-ins the team has had with the law the past few years that involves alcohol.

in the end its a forum and people can have logical discussions on here but people have to remember that since these players play for a high profile hockey program they will be under scrutiny all the time. so when a good story is reported they better be prepared to handle a story like this where there are a lot of unanswered questions. its hard to believe people that stick up for him and say alcohol wasn't involved when not only kristo but the team has a history of alcohol related run-ins with the law. all i am saying is people need to stop having this mentality that the sioux never do anything wrong. this wouldnt even be that big of a deal if people didnt take it so personally.

on a side note do you think that hak would rat out his own player to the media if he was drinking underage? if he did that wouldn't he be opening a can of worms for not only kristo but the other guys who either drank or supplied the booze? just a thought....

After reading these posts the last couple of days, the only thing missing is Jerry Springer commenting on what happened or being abducted by aliens story!
