  1. The thing with ND is we need to get the support for hockey increased in the western part of the state. Also, ND highschoolers aren't registered with USA Hockey either.

I couldnt agree more. Hockey is a fairly popular sport in ND compared to other states, but problem is that it's tough for hockey to compete with basketball in ND especially out west. I know Bismarck is building a new school and i have read in the Tribune that they are not sure if they will have enough players to support a third highschool team. Would be nice to see Watford start a highschool program and others around the state with the population growth. Hopefully hockey continues to trend up in ND but its expensive to start a program and takes years to build a quality one and almost impossible to keep up with GF.
  2. {sigh}

It would take a veto override vote (requires 2/3 majority) in both chambers of the Legislature to undo a Governor's veto.

65-28 is already more than 2/3 of the house of reps, and if most of the votes go along party lines in the senate like it did in the house, then it will be 2/3 also. I dont know if the gov. vetos the bill if it has to go back and be revoted on though.

Here is a link on how a bill becomes law in ND for anyone who is interested. http://www.legis.nd.gov/docs/pdf/bill-law.pdf

  3. Or ... (get your tin foil hat out) ...

They are trying to take control of the universities back from the ND SBoHE,

    or ...

They know this will damage UND in the athletics realm, and if it hurts UND it has to help NDSU, right?

    [/tin foil hat]

I counted 13 reps that voted yes that attended UND. One, Stacy Dahl, who represents the GF District and also attended UND. Im sure they are all out to help NDSU also.

  4. Again, the settlement agreement would not become "illegal" if this proposed law passes.

There's no use getting bogged down on the part of the bill that urges the AG to consider bringing an anti-trust suit against the NCAA. Either that part of the bill will be stripped before ultimate passage or the AG will choose not to do it because he knows that such a suit would get promptly dismissed. I can't say I know exactly how this whole thing is going to end, but I can say that you will not be seeing the State of North Dakota bring another anti-trust lawsuit against the NCAA.

What should be happening right now as this bill is making its way forward is that the powers that be ought to be reaching out to the NCAA to see if they will work with us in a productive way, and if not, threatening political consequences. Really, only Conrad and Hoeven on the federal level have the power to get the NCAA's attention in that regard. Unfortunately, neither has shown any real interest in this issue.

So can you explain why it would not become illegal? Whats the difference between this law and any other law they pass that is legal now and after it is passed is illegal? Im not a great law mind so thats why im asking you these questions. I have read siouxboosters33 posts and they seem to be backed up with reasons and facts as to why the new law would make the settlement illegal. Im not saying anybody is wrong or right here. Everybody also keeps saying the NCAA is gonna impose sanctions, UND is not going to get in to the big sky, other schools are going to go along with wisconsin and minnesota and not play UND, it goes on and on. Some of these things likely could happen but nobody knows for sure. Like you said you dont know how its going to end. Its all speculation at this point. Im very interested to see what happens. I hope the Legislature passes this and the nickname prevails without hurting UND. I have some doubts as well and i think there is a long way to go, but i do support the legislatures effort.

  5. These repercussions that you speak of are a figment of your imagination. Please stop doing the dirty work for the anti-nickname crowd. Now here is the link showing not only Hakstol but also Roebuck supporting the Carlson bill.

People Want to Keep Sioux Nation

I like the poll at the bottom also.

Should North Dakota continue to fight to save the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo?

Thank you for participating in our poll. Here are the results so far:

YES - Listen to the people.

    80%

NO - It's time to put this to rest

    18%

    Not Sure

    2%

  6. Has anyone gotten their tickets in the mail yet? I thought they were to be out around Xmas but have yet to receive mine. Just checking if anyone else has gotten them.

I called and asked about mine. They said february.

  7. Im glad the legislature is taking a stand on this. Yes it should have been done sooner but at least somebody is sticking up for what the majority of the people want. Better late than never. It sad that everyone is rolling over now and taking it in the you know what. If you believe that UND should keep the name then you should stand behind those that are trying to do so. Those that wanted the name gone never gave up until they got what they want. Now we should just let them have there way? Screw that! Maybe there is no chance or a small chance this goes anywhere but people still need to push this issue if thats what they believe in. I will never concede to these politically correct morons. In my opinion the majority of people in this state want to keep the nickname regardless of race. I think the members on the SBOHE gave in and let the minority win.
