  1. I liked the fact that REA played John Denver's song Take Me Home last night, but I would l love it if REA switched the lyrics on the scoreboard to say "North Dakota" instead of "West Virginia"...or maybe have the sound person turn that part of the song down, and have everyone yell "North Dakota"...

Somebody please make this happen because that is a fun song for the arena.

  2. I hope they don't overdo it though.  They must know the vast majority of folks did not want this, and it kind of feels like rubbing our faces in it.

I agree.  The vote has nothing to do with what people wanted.  When push comes to shove, yes people had to vote for one or the other, it still doesn't mean that that is what they wanted.  I'm not a "nickname fanatic" but this still feels like a bad dream.

  3. The saddest part of this whole ordeal is that it seems like maybe 5-10% of people are truly excited about one of these options. The others are voting which they can tolerate. i can't tolerate either, therefore I didn't vote.

I felt the same way, but one of these two names are going to win, so I really think you should use your right to vote and vote for one.  Trust me, if there was a "none of the above" category, I would have chosen it, but I really felt obligated to vote in the long run.

  4. Voting starts tomorrow. This needs to be said:

The idea of North Dakota adopting the official nickname "Fighting Hawks" is both completely illogical and totally and absolutely in every way not unique or representative to our region, state, or school.

Hawks don't fight:  While I do concede that I am not an expert in ornithology, I'm pretty sure the idea of hawks fighting is completely nonsensical.  Hawks soar, hawks prey, hawks hunt and they probably do some other things to kill time but they don't fight.   Do we really want to have the official name of our school be something that doesn't even make sense?

Hawks isn't original at all:   Somewhere on this forum there are stats on how many schools who have had to change their native American nicknames opted to go with Hawks as a nickname and the number is astounding!  Look it up.

Make no mistake about it, Changing our name to Fighting Hawks is actually changing our name to Hawks.  Fighting can be put in front of any name and by the way of the three names up for vote it fits Hawks the least by a million miles.  Fighting Roughriders- 0k, Fighting-Nodaks-I like how this sounds, Fighting Hawks-Huh?? really??  ...hey look at those hawks fight!  They are very impressive fighters those hawks..

The fact that Hawks got Fighting included in it as a nickname option is almost a little suspicious? One could argue that putting 'fighting' with hawks was a ploy to manipulate people into being drawn to a generic name by including fighting in the name making it feel similar to "fighting Sioux'?  I'm just saying.

Please tell everyone you can these reasons to NOT vote for Hawks.

Great post!  You said everything that I have been feeling, thank you!  Go Nodaks.

  5. Teddy Roosevelt is quoted as follows:

"I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota."

"It was here that the romance of my life began."

"I grow very fond of this place, and it certainly has a desolate, grim beauty of its own, that has a curious fascination for me."

I love North Dakota and it's history. It is wonderful that we have a connection to a man who became
President of the United States. A man who lead the "Roughriders" in their famous charge up San Juan Hill. A man who loved North Dakota and was appreciative of how the state impacted his life.

I will be voting for Roughrider as the UND nickname.

I can't believe you forgot to add this quote from TR as well:

‘I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of ten are, and I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.’

  6. One way we can end this once and for all is to vote Roughriders and push it over 50%. Otherwise, we'll get stuck with Fighting Hawks off of a plurality (33%+1). And that would be a farce, so much so that this issue may continue to fester and simmer until people start demanding a do-over. And UND doesn't need that nonsense right now.

Too late for this being a "farce", this is a joke.  I'm voting NoDaks because it's at least somewhat original.  There's already RoughRiders at the High School, and Fighting Hawks is just silly because you try to retain some of the past by keeping the word "Fighting" and then you pick the most bland animal/bird possible.  Yuck.  I am really disheartened by this whole process.

  7. All 82,000 will be eligible to vote again.  It is possible many didn't vote because they either didn't care, or they were expecting a runoff.  Seeing Fighting Hawks may get more of the RR or Nodak supporters to vote.

Why I don't understand is if 82,000 plus people registered their email to verify they were eligible, Why did so few vote?  It's not like you had to go wait in line at a polling site.  YOu could do it from your phone it about 30 seconds.  No excuse wy the voter turnout shouldn't have been higher.

When 3/4's of the voters chose not to vote, you know there is a problem.  60,000 people feel that this system is flawed and messed up, and I agree.

60,000 "non votes" is a majority...I hate to say it, but this whole thing needs to be blown up and done over...
