OldLongTimeFan:
Your derragatory comments towards coaches is uncalled for and unappreciative. I would be interested to see if you make the same comments if you had to sign your name.
UND women's basketball doesn't need fans like you. Keep in mind that recruits, ex-players, and current players read these posts and I can bet you that they wouldn't be proud of playing for fans like yourself and having the program be downgraded per your comments.
The conference and national championshipt banners mean alot to the program - - and laid the foundation for the move to Division I. Also, the teams during the championship years would have been very successful in Division I as Coach Daddy said.
Reading your comments makes me wonder how much basketball you have watched.

I think the program meaning coaches, players, and fans should always be concerned about departures whether they are new or not - - especially players that leave before the season is done - and in this case only one game remaining.
The attitude about freeing up scholarships to bring in new players doesn't say much about the program - - scholarships were already available - didn't a couple of players (one that has close ties to the program) get cut when the new coach came in.
So - with this being said - it has a reflection on the program and what it has stood for - - which is important to the fans and players that have supported the program - - TRADITION!

I have always followed the UND womens program since my playing days as this program meant so much to me. I am extremely disappointed in the results since Coach Roebuck's retirement and concerned on where the program is headed - especially after reading about the recent players quitting the team.
Coach Roebuck was not only a good practice and game coach, but a person who worked extremely hard in getting players to reach their potential and pushing them to be the best they could be and get better each year. Sometimes we wouldn't always agree with his way of doing things, but after you left the program you realized and appreciated how you were a part of something so special and your respect for him grew even deeper. He let us grow and develop but did not control us - or as I have read earlier "micro-manage".
I have watched some of the webcasts this year and it was evident players were being asked to play a "fast" game that did not suit the players that were on the floor which resulted in the turnovers, etc. This especially affected the guards. The two players that quit had a bright future coming into this year as they contributed last year as freshman. I was able to watch them a couple of times and followed their progress.
Developing the UND women's basketball tradition started with great leadership and having the ability to work with players that all had different expectations and abilities. It is sad to see that disappear in one year - - and it is also sad to hear that entering the Big Sky Conference is an excuse. The players and coaches today should of had to play in the North Central Conference with the great competition it had year in and year out. Playing back to back nights weekend after weekend was a challenge and if you slipped up even once, you lost the luxury of hosting a conference or regional tourney which had implications of a possible national championship opportunity. The competitiveness of this conference was unbelievable.
So - maybe the exit of these players sends a message to the coaches. It is a shame what one year can do that took +20 years to build - the tradition is something the past players have great pride in.

Any update - the feed went out again.
The athletic department should put some money into equipment so their fan base can hear the games. What a joke!

I am a little surprised that Brewster feels there is a need to "houseclean" the women's program. I would argue that the women's program has handled the transition better than the men's program has. And Roebuck didn't seem like the type of coach who would put up with any nonsense from anyone. I find it hard to believe that any lazy players would be allowed on the team in the first place. I suppose it's possible that Roebuck had lost some of his fire and had started to let some things go. I think going with a younger, more energetic coach will benefit the program in the long-term.
You don't hear of too many players getting cut during the season except if there were legal issues, etc. so it makes sense that if the players displayed lack of effort during the year or whatever the reason was, this is time that it is usually done. Coach Brewster is the coach now so I'm sure that is why he made the decision - not Roebuck. So - I think it is really unfair to say that Coach Roebuck lost some of his fire - evidently you didn't go to many games as it looked like he was the same right up to the end. In fact, the picture I saw in the GF Herald tells the story - competitive as ever.

Forgot one more thing..........There is no blame here - just FACTS
The information from the Great West Conference is that the reason UND was not awarded the Great West Tourney is they DID NOT bid it - simply put.
-
Look at the seedings and who hosted last year - on WBI website
Several teams with lower seeds hosted the games...................
-
Considering that the UND Athletic Administration didn't bid for the Great West Conference Tournament which would have been for both the men's and women's games, they probably don't have an interest in hosting a game. If they did bid and didn't get it - their bid probably wasn't very good. Too bad for the basketball fans as it seems they have always supported the playoff games in the past - something the administration evidently doesn't recognize.

Maybe it is time. Falling behind by 21-0 in BB out of the gate can influence people.
Ole in MSP - since when did coaches play the game. They can prepare and prepare and prepare - but at some time the players have to put the tennis shoes and play the game. What a stupid comment.

Great breakdown Sic.
I don't disagree that seniors have to lead with their play. But until we have other players who are at the very least a threat to other teams, our opponents are going to harrass Mallory to no end. Last year at least Baaggy had Mal and Bergan if she was being chased all over the floor, teams before that had players who could step in if the star was going to be taken away. Right now we don't anyone who can consistently step up and hit shots when Mal is being doubled, chased whatever. I think its really effecting her... which is sad because I believe out of all the players on the roster, everything should be done to allow those players to have fun their senior years, because there has never been any postseason for them to get to- why should they have to suffer when all they did was come in and try help the program through the transitiion? Which as just alluded to is a miserable place to be for a athletic program. At the very least they should be having fun...and I'm not so sure they are having fun right now. Getting hammered repeatedly by very good teams has got to be getting old. I don't see it ending until conference season, no matter how well our Seniors or our Freshman play.
I am a little confused - don't the players now all get full rides each year. In fact, if you are redshirted, I think you get it for 5 years. Wow - that is alot of money to have just to have FUN. Shouldn't there be some expectations for players to play hard all the time which is to rebound, hustle, play tough defense, be a leader when you are a senior captain and set an example for the younger players. Even when your shots are not falling - should these just be expectations for all players, especially seniors and even more for 5-year seniors.
I have watched the last two webcasts and there is no leadership - at least I didn't see it on the floor. In fact, it seemed more like pouting. If your shot is not falling, you can still help the team by rebounding and doing little things that count in the end. I have played with many players that wern't big scorers but they hustled, worked hard and had great attitudes - - they had fun.......................and that is all Coach asked for. In fact, down the stretch, they made big plays that made us champions.

Great wins for the Sioux this weekend. When they play gritty and lay it on the line, good things happen.

This is a person who lives alone!!!
If I remember, there is a 6'5" post on the bench that would change the entire scope of things - the first player off the bench that would provide an immediate impact. I heard that a couple of hours before the first game coaches were told from the Compliance Department she couldn't play. If that is true, how disheartening to the team, coaches, and most of all the player - is the compliance staff accountable to anyone?
-
does anyone know how many turnovers our team had - it sure sounded like Guin and Kimbrough had their share.
-
It is too bad our All American is sitting on the bench for the most important part of the game - you need to WORK on both ends.....................
-
Sioux up 17, but have 25 turnovers.
Do we have any captains on this team? This is getting ridiculous.....................

What kills NDSU is nobody cares about these non-DI games, in the DI games the team has played the average attendance is 3489 which is solid considering only ORU has any name recognition. I hope a few local DI teams are added next year and a few lower division teams vanish. Saul is friends with Brian Jones and definitely wants the game to be played, so there is hope that may happen but he has no power until the admin lifts their ban on playing UND.
How about some marketing? No band - would football and hockey settle for no band at their games. Poor excuse that students are on break - how about getting a high school band in there - how about having some specials to get traveling teams, YMCA teams, out of town teams etc. into games. Basketball doesn't even get the support of other teams on campus - how about the football team. It seems like the basketball, volleyball and other teams attend their games - I have even seem sitting in the front row to cheer them on - the coaches and team don't seem to repay the support. The reason for the push to DI was for football and they don't even play DI - and don't support the other programs on campus that have accepted the move.........
-
UND has committed 50 turnovers over the past two games.
The box score shows that our point guard had 6 turnovers - - - won't win that way.

I thought it was ridiculous to make attendance comparisons to past years based upon a combined five home games between the men and women, only one of which (women's game vs. Eastern Michigan) was a matchup that anybody but the hardest of the hardcore fans could possibly care much about. Everybody knew that with such poor home schedules, attendance wasn't going to be good this year. But let's at least wait until we see a few more games against peer opponents, such as USD, before we make any comparisons to past years. In all honesty, besides the January 24 doubleheader vs. USD and the women's game already played vs. Eastern Michigan, are there any games on the schedule that could reasonably be expected to generate any buzz whatsoever? Next year will be better, as some of the dI opponents played on the road this year will be coming to Grand Forks.
Look who wrote the article and then you will probably understand - doesn't have a clue.

Jenny Crouse ACCIDENTALLY falling in our laps helps a great deal there Mr. Expert. I will cool it though. I appreciate you speaking your mind as I have.
Don't you dare say Jenny Crouse accidentally fell into our laps. She came to UND because of academics, players, coaches and the program. I know her very well and she was one athlete that thought about academics as much as basketball and wasn't going to go Division I because she thought highly of herself. She came to UND because they had the TOTAL package. I would have to disagree with you in saying that that was an accident.

I think you've got it siouxdude the offense is so revolved around getting it in to the post right now that the perimeter players are not just playing they are focused on looking inside with every touch. Kimbrough is a great post and deserves many touches every game but they will come and the perimeter players just need to play the game and not be overly focused on looking inside, they need to take what is there, if it is the 3 or drive or drive and dish or rotating the ball. They all seem to stiff and need to relax and play with more energy that seems to be lacking.
We have to have Guinn, Youngblut, and Baagason score for us to be successful. It was nice to see Seay had a nice game Saturday if we get that type of play from the other 3 we will win our share of games.
I watched the game on Toledo's webcast and Guinn, Bergan, Youngblut and Baagason had lots of open looks and even had plays set up for them and they didn't score. The players that played in the second half and were in at the end of the game didn't seem to have a problem scoring - - the fact is each player has to approach every game mentally and focused ready to play. If not, it sounds like the coaching staff will play players that are. If players can't accept that, they should go to small school where they don't receive a $15,000 scholarship yearly and play. The turnovers from the Toledo game were not caused from trying to get the ball inside, they were caused from lack of fundamental play and focus. Certainly not something you think would come from players that have been in the program for more than 1 year. Let's hope they continue on competing and those that do will continue to play.
Coaching Changes
in Women's Basketball

All of these coaches except Sannes (who was BB of Operations) were hired by the current coach - - not Roebuck.
Sannes was director of basketball operations when Roebuck coached - and this position is not a coach.
Maybe it is time to quit blaming Roebuck - for all the departures including players and holding the current coach for his actions.
Maybe we should be thanking him for all the hard work in taking the program through the Division I transition - he could have easily made the decision to leave before or during the transition. Coaches and those close to the program can attest to the difficult work of the transition - - not sure the normal fan has a clue.
This program now is in the hands of Coach Brewster - being an assistant is alot different than being the head coach - let's see how he handles it.
