  1. We had at least a couple of glaciers, but the last one resulted in Lake Agassiz. It was a fairly recent glacier. The ground is still rebounding from the weight of the glacier. Plus the Red River, which was the last remnant of the lake, drains north into Lake Winnipeg. The various beaches from Lake Agassiz are still visible if you know what you are looking for. There are sand and rock deposits in strips with the biggest deposits 30 to 40 miles on either side of the Red River. And you can see where the valley starts as you drive north through northern South Dakota on Interstate 29.

Interesting, I never thought about the Red River draining north. I guess we always think everything in the plains drain into the Mississippi. But draining north makes sense to the lake plain, much like we have a plain south of Lake Ontario. The lake covered it till it receded north and of course everything there, meaning Finger Lakes area drains north to the St. Lawrence. But just south of Syracuse and east of the Finger Lakes the drainage is south to Chesapeake Bay.

  2. Funny, you got waterfalls and escarpments when the glaciers receded and we got the flattest section of land in the world. I guess it just depended on what kind of land or rock was underneath the glacier.

Do you know where the glaciers stopped in your area? Here in NY we have areas effected by a couple of different glacier times. You often get a flat plain just past the terminal moraine (the furthest point of glacier advance). As the glacier melts and recedes it forms a lake with a flat bottom. Once the glacier fully recedes the lake goes away leaving the plain. I believe you were part of Lake Agassiz, thus it's flat.

edit: sorry, while typing this I had to help my daughter, so it's a little late.

  3. Can a Cornell guy be a Sioux fan? I'd love to wear one of those excellent black jersies while I watch on DirecTV... :(

OK, what's it take to get a game worn? Those store bought ones, well. Have you guys ever done a third, or in your case fourth jersey that you then auction off? Coach Schafer did a interesting one. He had a third jersey made and then had the players research every player who had previously worn his number. They had to come up with the player who they thought was most significant to wear that number. They put that nameplate on the jersey and wore them for a game. After the game the auctioned them off for charity.

I bought #14 Lodboa, he was the MVP for us in 1970 undefeated NCAA. Scored a natural hat trick, including a 2 men down SH, in the finals. After all, I'm as old as he is. It's interesting to wear it at away games and see who comes up to talk. Anyway, I ramble, but what about game worn?

  4. Dude, with all due respect...you (Cornell) is equivalent to a 5th place squad in WCHA. St Cloud, UMD, CC, Denver, UMN- Twin Cities, Mankato, all have tougher or equal places to play. Your 4200 seat arena has some character...but nothing different than 4-8 teams in the WCHA. I agree with others, ECAC should be name ECEZ. (easy)

Actually the common representation is EZAC. Let's get it right, OK? :(

  5. Great pics. Thanks for sharing.Looks like a cool ittle barn they play in.What was that all over the ice during introductions?

The students hold up newspapers when the opponents are introduced. Once they say the coaches name they throw them on the ice and a crew comes out to pick them up. The Zamboni (Olympia) driver has been there for years. When he retired last year, the U gave him approval to continue driving for the games. He wears a different costume for each game. He's acquired quite an assortment over the years.

  6. Thanks for all the nice comments. I posted my good-bye on the game thread, but I hope we all get together again. We do appreciate that there is at least one western team willing to come east. I'll post the link to your photos on eLynah.

  7. Dumb post.

CornellHockey was polite and offered interesting insights into the Big Red program all week.

There is no need to throw down a "hang banners" "where the two programs are" (lame) slam on him.

This was a great series between two really good programs. Don't belittle either team's effort by resorting to playground tactics. It just makes UND and its fans look stupid.

Thanks, one of the things that has kept me enjoying college hockey all these years (after all I came to Cornell when Ned Harkness came to coach) is that it's not only exciting, but after you can have a beer with your adversary. There's not a limited amount of fun out there; if we all try and make it better for each other, then we all gain. I met some nice UND fans and learned more about your school. For that I'm a better person and it makes it more enjoyable watching you when Cornell isn't there.

Well, it's probably time to move on, to each our conferences, and to hope we get to play one another in the playoffs. :(

  8. To be honest with you Cornell guy you should be lucky you got 2 points out of this weekend. You were playing a team that has two or three of its top players out and have been having some bad luck as of lately. I will give you credit for the win on Friday but lets be honest we don't hang banners in our rink for NCAA Tourny appearances we hang NCAA Championship banners. I think that says a lot of where the two programs are.

Gee thanks, I tell you that you have better players and deserved to win Fri.; so you rub it in my face. Maybe that's how you respond to a compliment, but it's not mine. If you want to discuss the programs, I'd be happy to do that, but not in that way. Look back at my former posts, I've been nothing but complimentary to your team and program. Oh well.

  9. And for the Cornell fan that complained about the referees all night and yelled "You moron!" when Gregoire scored the empty net goal......GET OVER IT!!!!!!!

    Let's Go Sioux!!

Well, I didn't yell you moron, so I guess I'm not that fan, but I did scream about the no-call that led to your winning goal. Maybe this post on eLynah will help:

I had two NoDak fans sitting next to me and they looked rather embarrassed at that goal. Both agreed it was a blatant penalty and should have been called (though, of course, they were pleased to score).
As I've said before, you guys have better players and deserved to win Fri., but to have the wind kicked out of you by that no-call, terrible. I'm proud of how the team kept trying, just think about the game if that was a penalty instead of a goal.
  10. CornellHockey,

Thank you VERY much for the detailed information. I am going to try to get to the campus in daylight so I can look around and hopefully buy an extra ticket from someone outside.

    I sent you this message:

I've got an extra that I'm trying to sell. Call me at 315-877-1180 if you need it. Good luck, but not too much of it, tonight.

  11. Cornellhockey,

Thanks for the info. I was going to drive up I-81. Is the campus and hockey arena easy to find?

    Yes, here's standard directions:

I-81 (from the south): Take exit 8 at Whitney Point; follow Route 79 West all the way to Ithaca. At the flashing yellow light (intersection with Pine Tree Road), turn right onto Pine Tree Road; continue to the end of Pine Tree Road at the intersection with Route 366 (flashing red light). Turn left onto Route 366; continue to the flashing yellow light and proceed straight onto Hoy Road; the parking garage and stadium will be on your right. Hoy Road ends at the intersection with Campus Road; turn right onto Campus Road to reach Lynah Rink.

If you do a Google map search for Newman Arena, Lynah will show up adjacent to it. In fact you can get to the rink more easily by turning right off Pine Tree Road on Route 366. Then left on Judd Falls Road, left on Campus Road. Once you pass Wing Road you'll see parking on the right. There's parking all along Campus Road up to Newman Arena (Also known as Bartels Hall). There's also a wrestling match with Lehigh so parking will be tight. So if it looks packed take the first space you see and walk. Walk along to Bartel's Hall, enter and keep walking west and you'll see tables set up for selling jerseys, etc.. Past that you'll walk to the attached rink.

Where are your tickets? Visitors are usually in Sec. O. Here's a seating chart. If you go by official directions and park in the garage you'll enter from the open end at section A. That's the students entrance. Walk into section A and there's a walkway at the end of the rink over to section O. If you come by my directions you'll be at the F,G,H,J end. I'm in section L row 11 seat 23. It's on the section K end of the row. Stop by, you'll need to convince the attendant you just want to visit as with your ticket they won't want to let you down.

  12. For those who are thinking of coming east to Cornell, welcome. I hope to meet some of you. Spring semester begins Jan. 25, so I suspect most students will be back, at least for the Sat. game. There is a ticket exchange where you can post to buy tickets from a season ticket holder who wants to sell. The link for eLynah is here. Click on Forum List and you can get from the ticket site to the forum.

  13. bc football played this afternoon. patriots play tomorrow. it's not baseball season. don't know if the celtics or bruins play, but come on, they've got millions of possible fans. cant find 6 or 7 thousand who like college hockey? i feel you though, college hockey is a tough sell almost everywhere.

Of course there is also BC, BU, and Northeastern in Boston. BU played BC tonight in front of 7884 fans. Given the choice which do you think they'd go to? Then you've got a number of lower division teams and U Mass-Lowell, Providence, Brown, and UNH all about an hour away. So Boston supports college hockey quite well. I'd guess better per capita than any other city. Harvard on the other hand gets very little support from its students and alums.

Now the obligatory, thanks for beating Harvard and all of Cornell hopes you do well the rest of the year.

I hope to meet some of you in DC this April, or next season at Lynah. I'll be wearing a number 14 jersey with Lodboa name. He was our MVP in 1970 NCAA Championship, scoring a 2 man-down shorty to go along with a PP and even strength natural hat trick. But that's ancient history, so good-bye.

  14. OK, I just got back from our Cornell game with Clarkson and started looking at box scores. What the f.... happened? 10 goals on 37 shots while Harvard gets 1 0n 40? From those that watched the game, were the Harvard goalies that bad? From scrolling through all the posts, I don't remember who first asked for 10 goals, but someone give that man a beer from me, you can send me the bill.

Now a little info from our side. Harvard never gets a good crowd. They come late and sit on their hands. I don't know how many fans you had there, but no way it would be more than Cornell gets. We have come to rename the place Lynah East and until they started limiting ticket sales to us, we'd have half the seats.

What really happened at the 16:31 mark. I've not seen Harvard that undisciplined, both the fighting and all the 5x3s that they gave up.

Keep up the good work tomorrow. Usually we'd be rooting for the ECAC team, but seeing how we just played you and seeing how it's Harvard, Go For It.

  15. Well a nice ending from our point of view. Like you, I can't understand how we didn't get the hitting from behind calls. In the ECAC they are calling those routinely. I think one thing you didn't do as well tonight is to forecheck more on our breakouts. We have been poor all year once we are holding the puck behind our net. Yes this is the kind of game we can win. We don't have the same degree of up front talent that scholarship schools can get, so strong defense with good goaltending, and opportunistic scoring is our game.

Hope we can see some of you in DC in April and at Lynah next season.

  16. I didn't want to see Cornell get the first goal because now they will go into lockdown. :glare:

First no lockdown this early, and second, in a couple of our wins we gave up over 40 shots. Not the CU team of old.

  17. Well, now that we're traveling to you (not me unfortunately  ), The Grand Forks Herald is reporting that you're coming to us Jan 22-23, 2010. I hope we get to see some of you there. I hope you get to meet some Cornellians, we do enjoy a good party and you'll find them a knowledgeable bunch. Good luck on the rest of your season; win, lose, or draw we want you to bring up our standing. :D
