  1. I was just in Fargo and I can't tell you a single person I've talked to that put any credence in the NWS.

They all said it will crest again at no higher than 40 feet.

There is a possibility of error, as there always is, but I think the worst is over.

Next we can start building nice beaches on our lakefront with all the used sand.

That's a good idea, but I don't think the sand in the bags is even near the quality needed for a walkable beach. Lots of jagged rocks and such. Though it would be nice to make all the lakes beaches larger with the plethora of sand in the valley. ???

  2. http://northdakotapreps.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=6485

If you want to see how this topic turned out on the preps forums, just look at that. Really heats up about the middle/end of the first page.

I think this is a turn for the better, but as this is a GF dominated forum I have the feeling I won't be agreed with. We know the Ralph is a better venue, but I think the more expensive arena doesn't translate to a better venue in this situation. Fargo at least deserves a chance.

  3. I would criticize the forecasters, but I would have no idea what I'm talking about. The fact they were within a foot or so last time seems pretty accurate to me (they always officially said 42 - outside chance of 43). Anything over 43 would be devastating for the city. My house is Moorhead is two miles from the river but would have water at 43.5 feet according to the GIS projections.

This all depends on the weather and trying to precisely predict mother nature is impossible. Looks like I should not have taken the floor drains out of the basement. :D

It looks like the Mayor Walaker disagrees with the NWS:

Assuming the quote is right - I guess he knows more than the NWS. :)

I'm definitely not saying that Walaker is correct, I often go in the opposite direction he does, but he's trying to settle Fargo down a bit. We have two weeks to prepare instead of 3 days this time, no need to panic. The NWS does blow things out of proportion at times, everything from wind storms to hurricanes. They prepare and alert for the absolute worst, and also, predictions like this get national attention for help, in case we do need it.

  4. Folks, this one is far from over: There's still another face-off to be won.

Just out from NWS/AHPS (link below, and be sure to note the "valid" dates to know this is updated):

    That's says Fargo has:

    - a 90% chance of going back to 40.4

    - a 70% chance of setting a new new record

Well let's hope they're wrong again. They overpredicted by two feet just 48 hours before the crest hit, how reliable is two weeks?

  5. Fargo is doing perfectly fine at the moment. A lot of streets are reopened and inside Fargo it basically feels like any other day. The word of a second crest is among us with all this new snow, so we'll see.

  6. What about the other people in the FM area that are not Sioux fans?

    Too bad.

Haha, just kidding. Hopefully Fargo does just fine in the face of this flood. Looks to be a biggun.

  7. Wow, nice posts you two. I agree with both of you on that. The fact is that chewing may not alter your ability to play a sport as smoking or excessive alcohol will, but it does have incredibly dangerous side effects as well as addictive properties, and I'm completely against having any high school athlete, or anybody for that fact, chewing. Is it really worth that small buzz you get?

  8. I still don't believe it was peanut butter. I mean come on, skates...check, stick....check, pads....check, peanut butter?

The peanut butter was part of a tournament supply of food that they buy so that they don't have to worry about them getting fed all day long, or so I'm told, and they've had the food before. Unless I'm being lied to, it was peanut butter. For those saying it was feces, do you really think that they would do what it takes to make that happen? That's absurd, and would have been a far different situation.

As for stupid things, I guarantee you could easily find similar things from any school across the state, including your Grand Forks teams. At least these kids weren't doing things like drinking or chewing in their locker rooms. Not saying it's acceptable, but events like this aren't uncommon.

  9. Ok, so you're justifying it. It wasn't just peanut butter, they broke numerous chairs and hand dryers. Sounds like the Herald could've pumped more of an 'anti-Fargo' agenda if they wanted to, but instead kept it under wraps.

Please tell me where you got this information. As far as I know (From a parent of the team no less), there was no property damage and the only thing that took place was peanut butter being thrown onto the walls of the shower in the locker room. This completely coincides with the story. There is no mention of property damage (Broken chairs and hand dryers would have DEFINITELY been put into this category, as well as mentioned, which they weren't), and I see nothing wrong with the comment by the coach. How do you respond to a question about something that was cleaned up upon arrival? "Mountain out of a Mole Hill" sounds like a good description to me.

The only stupid thing that happened was that it wasn't stopped during the occasion or before they left. This occurrence is hardly newspaper worthy, and really didn't need to involve the public. Or maybe it's just because I'm from Fargo that I see it this way.

To DaveK, you're on a Grand Forks forum, filled with Grand Forks natives, and Grand Forks parents, players and fans. You won't receive any help here, and anything you say will be shot down if it regards anything positive towards Fargo or negative towards Grand Forks. It's basically like a NDSU/UND argument, there's no way to debate, just make sure the facts are straight and let it go.

  11. Not a stupid question at all. Dean Wilson resigned after taking a job as an assistant principle at Carl Ben Eielson. He seemed to leave the Bruins with one of the most talented squads they've had in a while. The coaching jobs are now filled by Benson (Head) and Davidson (Assistant).

I'd look forward to seeing Benson being named Coach of the Year for EDC or State for sure, simply due to the team he has.

Here's another updated on the EDC/WDA tournaments. So far all the top seeds have dominated in EDC, and I don't know what's been happening in the WDA, lots of lower seeds beating higher ones.

    EDC

    Friday, February 20th:

    [#8] Shanley - 2 vs. [#5] West Fargo - 8 (Loser-out Game)

    [#7] Devils Lake - 1 vs. [#6] Fargo North - 2 (Loser-out Game)

Game 11 5:30 p.m. [#1] Bismarck vs [#3] Minot (Both teams advance to State)

  12. The RR/North game ended at 8-2, not 3-0. Also, the EDC and WDA have the exact same structure. If you win 2/3 you go to state. If you lose two you're out.

    EDC Day Two

    Game 7 5:00 p.m. [#1] Bismarck High vs. [#4] Bismarck Century

    Game 8 7:30 p.m. [#2] Williston vs. [#3] Minot

  13. No posts about the Fargo South vs. GF Central game? Did anybody go to it? Thoughts?

Lots of penalties, not a very large sense of determination to win from either team. I don't think South or Central played to the caliber that they normally do. Central won mostly be dumping and chasing and South was too busy in transition play to get some good offense going. South still takes the 1st seed either way. Brackets end up like this for the regular season:

    Final EDC Standings:

    • Team Name Records Points Seed
      Fargo South 13-1 30-pts 1st Seed
      G.F. Central 12-2 28-pts 2nd Seed
      G.F. Red River 11-3 27-pts 3rd Seed
      Grafton/P.R. 8-6 21-pts 4th Seed
      West Fargo 5-9-1 14-pts 5th Seed
      Fargo North 4-9-1 13-pts 6th Seed
      Devils Lake 2-11-2 8-pts 7th Seed
      Fargo Shanley 2-7-2 6-pts 8th Seed
      Wahpeton/Breck 0-9 0-pts 9th Seed

      Final WDA Standings:
      • Team Name Records Points Seed
        Bismarck High
    14-1 30 pts 1st Seed

  14. /dusts off the Siouxsports.com username

Mostly just been posting on NDPreps because this forum is pretty dead lately. :D

Here's what I believe the rankings will end up like for the top four in EDC:

    1) Fargo South ------------------- with 32 Points (Out of 32 Possible)

    2) Grand Forks Red River ---- with 27 Points (Out of 27 Possible)

    3) Grand Forks Central -------- with 26 Points (Out of 28 Possible)

    4) Grafton / Park River --------- with 23 Points (Out of 25 Possible)

(I think these are right, but I made it in about 5 minutes of mental math and typing... so don't know for sure)

Red River should be thanking South for that overtime loss at this point. That extra point they received is likely going to clinch them second place in the EDC. However, Central can still win out and overtake second place.

I'd also agree with the healthy part. It always seems that teams get plagued with influenza or mono at these times of the year, so it's a good idea for teams to take care of themselves at this point.

  15. Bismarck beat South. It looks like a Western school is the favorite to win state for the first time since the Peluso (Bismarck), Philion (Minot) days. Actually, I believe that is the only year a Western team has ever won state. I want to say it was 92, I remember watching the game while I was playing bantams.

I only saw Bismarck play once, and they did not impress me too much. They were very solid defensively. I remember looking at their roster and seeing all Sr and Jr's.

Yeah I said the closest EDC game, though.

Little bit on controversy on the game too:

    http://northdakotapreps.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=6231

    http://northdakotapreps.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=6222

and also a really long discussion in the WDA forums:

    http://northdakotapreps.com/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=6237

  16. An update on south. South beat North 3-0 on Thursday, and like jloos said they really looked bad. 0 shots in the first period.

Also, the Forum had a small blurb, but it looked like South beat Central up in GF 4-1. Bucholtz played great, again, for south as Central put close to 35 shots on net.

Grafton plays at South today in a match up of 3-0 EDC teams.

    South wins 7-3.

  17. Just an FYI:

Fargo South beat then #8 ranked White Bear Lake 4-3 at the UP Center on Friday. From what I heard, didn't see it. South played very well in the first and second, but started chasing WBL in the third. Also, I don't know the circumstances, but WBL had a goal disallowed.

Good start for South. Now on the intrastate matchups.

I don't remember a goal being disallowed. Unless you're counting the one earlier in the game when the whistle sounded because the goalie covered it, and after about 2-3 seconds and the goalie lifting his glove up the WBL player hit it in the net and celebrated counts. ???

You're right though, South began to let WBL walk around a lot more in the third. They didn't show as much effort as they had in the first two periods.

  18. Kind of a bump here. Finally started looking at these forums again. :silly:

School is starting up all around the State, and the buzz is about to begin. Seems pretty dull in here right now though. :silly:

    Anyways -

Fall hockey leagues are starting, who's playing and for who?

Fargo South got their head coach (don't know about assistants? :silly: ), his name is David Benson, formerly coached for the Fargo Flyers and coached a College team in South Dakota. Seems qualified?

Predictions for the coming school year?

    *Dusts off thread*

  19. Front Funner.

I was expecting Wilson would stay for a few more years before stepping down, but I guess he was just waiting for this opportunity to arise. The new coach will have a lot of opportunity to succeed, they've got a pretty decent lineup, but Grafton and Central still look pretty good at this point too. If they get a good new coach, I see them doing extremely well, if they don't, it could be trouble for them.

Can't wait to watch some hockey in this new UP center.
