  1. Hi, my name is Bubba.  This is my Super Bowl.  Yes, I know we have to worry about other games, but this is my Super Bowl.  Yes, I know i got my ass kicked by NDSU the last 3 times, but this is my Super Bowl.  I know we did okay in the Big Fluffy, but I need to beat these guys as they kick my ass in recruiting.  This is why I wanted to go to the Valley, as I know i can beat these guys if I just get them at the hilarious center.  Hell, I hoped the Gene Taylor "home and home" contract would work, but it didn't.  This is my Super Bowl.  We win this and I magically win every recruiting battle from here on out, as this is my Super Bowl.   Coach Entz is a moron for not realizing this is also his Super Bowl, but screw him, he'll never beat me in recruiting again.  Everything will magically be well at home now that I have my Super Bowl.

So less than half 2 of the 3 years, proving that timeslot, channel and what is on other channels makes a significant difference. I'm still not sure how comparing events in different time slots, 5 months apart, makes any sort of a point? The numbers are what they are, but you're trying way to hard to prove a point that no one is arguing. The NCAA hockey tournament sells out every year in advance and is full regardless of who plays. Can the same be said about the FCS championship game? Both are second tier sports (by a huge margin). Thank you for providing information showing that neither FCS or D-1 hockey are even on the fringe of where FBS football and NCAA basketball are.

Can't argue with your final point.  And yes, the FCS title game is sold out for the 5 year in a row and has been so for months.  Now who would have bought all those tickets? :)  (Feel free to flame; ripe for the pickings as it makes your point)

If NDSU would have played the Friday night game on ESPN2, I feel confident guess the rating would have been at least half of what it was.

I liked your post, but we can easily answer this with semi-final historical context:

    2012 Season
    ESPN2: NDSU vs GSU, 974k

    2013 Season
    ESPN2: NDSU vs UNH 813k

    2014 Season
    ESPN2: NDSU vs SHSU, 790k

Those are all semi-final Friday night games.  And all of them crush the championship hockey game.  I respect folks who don't care and only care about hockey since it is played at the highest level, but you will never be known on a national basis.

  4. I think hockey will always be king at UND, but to suggest it is somehow more popular than NDSU football is hard to justify.  The NDSU/UNI game on ESPN had over 1.6 million viewers.  Here are the numbers from the 13 televised NCAA hockey tourney games last year:

    BU-Prov 635k ESPN
    BU-UND 290K ESPN2
    Denver-BC .1 241K ESPN2
    Prov-Omaha 196k ESPN2
    UMD-BU .1 158k ESPN2
    SCSU-UND .1 148k ESPNU
    Quinn-UND .1 122k ESPNU
    RIT-OMAH .1 115k ESPNU
    MN-UMD .1 113k ESPNU
    Prov-Denver .1 84k ESPNU
    Yale-BU .0 63k ESPNU
    Prov-Miami .0 62k ESPNU
    RIT-Mankato .0 57k ESPNU

With all this said, if UND wants to be noticed on a national stage, they need to invest in basketball and football.  I do not think that needs to be mutually exclusive from supporting hockey, but some sports may need to be shuttered.

  5. Oh, good grief; what a load of crap.  Larson was clear from the beginning that NDSU was going to do this.  Right after it came out, he was on Steve Halstrom's show and all but said they would.  I pointed that out on this board and was told I was a moron, and stupid and there is no way NDSU was going to do this.  All I did was point out what Larson said and if I knew, Faison should have damn well known.  It is his fault if the Big Sky was not discussing it, as isn't that his job?  Well, now those posters, and UND administration yet again have egg on their faces.

  6. And I enjoy the wishful thinking that this won't be an issue for NDSU.  I mean, they are what, still almost $2 million short on paying for the football renovations done almost 10 years ago.  And what's the latest number on the shortfall for fundraising on the SHAC?  $5 or 6 million?  Or possibly even more.....?

But you can keep telling yourselves that this is no sweat at all if it makes you feel better.

What part of "Sicatoka Math 101" did you fail?  When you sell out your football games, and have 1000 person backlog for season tickets, you have options.

  7. I do enjoy the wishful thinking that maybe NDSU will not do FCOA in football and MBB.  You can keep telling yourselves that if it makes you feel better.  Read what Dom Izzo is saying and others "in the know."  Much of the discussion (ie silence), currently, is likely about which sports and staying Title IX compliant.

jdub and fightingsioux4life are correct; you are in big danger of becoming a hockey only competitive school when it comes to the big money sports.  If I was a fan of your school, I'd be burning up the e-mail/phone lines to your leadership.  It feels like 2003 all over again.

  8. I run "The Three" (not to be confused with "The Ocho") on my iPad just like I run the watch Big Sky app. Both are solid platforms. My only knock is that not all BSC schools have HD cameras in all their facilities and you can see the difference in picture.

Sadly, NDSU is getting little to no support from the MVFC in media coverage; what a joke they are for that and I will gladly admit Big Sky is much better for this, even if the level of play is way worse.

  9. Is our midco contract the reason for lack of ESPN3 coverage on our games or is there just not enough demand yet?

It does seem that way to me, but cannot confirm.  Some speculation on Bisonville on why we are not also simulcasted on Midco with NBC, and could be same reason.  I am betting they made an exception for the SDSU game, since most in SD who watched the game would be using Midco and since they have a contract with SDSU.

  10. Here in Rapid City, SD, I get Midco and the SD locals...so Midco Sports Net for UND FB and Hockey, no NDSU sports on my locals.

However, it sounds like Midco has an interest in picking up broadcast rights for NDSU football when they become available.

What is really interesting to me about Midco is that, in theory, they are like Comcast Chicago and other cable company owned sports networks.  Does anyone know if Midco will ever be available as part of a "sports pack" on Dish and Direct?  That would substantially "change the game" as it would give alumni all over the country the opportunity to watch games.

On other comment on NDSU media;  being on ESPN3 has been huge.  It give a very good way for folks to watch anywhere in the nation.  I live in Sioux Falls, and use my Xbox and even get an HD feed.  It has been very good.

  11. No question NDSU's TV deal with NBC is better than UND's deal with Midcontinent. With that said, the Midcontinent deal isn't horrible.

I agree with this, plus folks have to remember you get into many homes not in ND.  We had this philophical debate on bisonville and while we agreed NBC is clearly a better deal, the distribution out of ND makes Midco better than many realize.  NDSU needs to find a way to simulcast on FSN plus or something, then they will be lightyears ahead of the flagship.

  12. Can't believe I missed this thread!  My goodness; great work geaux_sioux.  (mirroring your excellent thread on Bisonville)

I am very glad the game is happening to show just how far apart the programs are, plus, we needed a home game, and you guys are getting paid basically nothing and basically getting no tickets.  Win, win, win.  And this is not smack, but reality.

  13. This program is so far from respectability it is depressing. My yard sign and flag will remain out all year but it is really painful when you live in Fargo.

Oh, come on, just go with it.  Yes, I was messing with you before and enjoyed the mocking of the Misery St. TV coverage which is thier blunder, not UN_.

What I have a hard time understanding, is that the VAST majority of the time from the 1960's on there has been one dominant football team in ND, and that is NDSU.  Is is very much like K St.  Just accept you can never be on NDSU's level and you will do much better and can enjoy you niche sport.  You will be much happier.

  14. Deep trouble as in they'd have to try?  I agree with that, but as long as they come ready to play they would certainly beat ndsu.  Now getting those "pre-madonnas"  ;) ready to play against an FCS team may be another story.

Good grief, this may be the dumbest statement I have heard in some time.  Sicatoka hit is on the head and is completely right; note the cut point he stated.  NDSU WAS Top 25 last year.  No, not in FCS, the entire country.  Check out the very objective Sagarin rankings.  Don't believe that?  Oh, NDSU nearly cracked the subjective AP top 25.  NDSU is already getting AP votes again!

I know it is hard for you to accept that NDSU football popularity dwarfs the following and popularity of your favorite niche sport, but lets at least be realistic like Sicatoka.

  15. I believe items of historical significance, such as the Nickel, are ok with the nc$$.  We get to keep our Sioux championship banners and that kind of stuff.

But will play for it take it from "history" to current?  It is an accurate depiction of a legal tender nickel, so I can't see the issue, but I am not an anti-nickname person, either.
