  1. not really a fight, toews got hit a couple times but took him down which was smart. toews was just sticking up for kane who got hit earlier. shows toews understands. nice to see out of a captain who isnt a fighter.

"In the box, I actually had to ask the guy if they gave us five minutes," Toews said. "I don't know if you'd even call that a fight."

"He's a guy I thought I could handle," Toews said. "It probably wasn't a good time to fight, but he wanted to go. I wasn't sure what I was doing, but at least I got out of it without getting hurt. That was the main thing."

  2. BLACKHAWKS NAME TOEWS 34th CAPTAIN IN TEAM HISTORY

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that center Jonathan Toews will serve as the team’s captain during the 2008-09 regular season, making him the third-youngest player to earn that distinction in the history of the National Hockey League.

Toews (20 years, 79 days) joins Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby and Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier as the one of the youngest players in professional hockey to captain his club. Crosby assumed his role at 19 years and 297 days, while Lecavalier took on the captaincy for the Lightning at 19 years and 330 days.

“Jonathan deserves this honor, he is a tremendous individual and a wonderful leader on and off the ice,” General Manager Dale Tallon said. “He has experience in captaining teams from his World Junior appearances and guys follow his lead in our locker room.”

Chicago’s first choice (3rd overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Toews led league rookies with 24 goals and seven power-play markers while ranking third with 54 points during his professional debut last season. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native ranked third on the Blackhawks with 30 assists and tied for third with his 54 points while appearing in 64 of the squad’s 80 matchups. He began his Blackhawks and professional career with a point in each of his first 10 games (5 goals, 5 assists), which is the second-longest streak to start a career in NHL history. Overall, he posted a point in 39 of his 64 contests.

Toews, who has captured Gold Medals for Team Canada in the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Champions, registered 40 goals and 85 points in 76 games with the University of North Dakota prior to turning pro. He joins current Blackhawks Head Coach Denis Savard (1988-89) as one of 34 players to wear the “C” for the organization.

  3. On Friday, the Daily Herald of Chicago reported the Blackhawks will make Toews the youngest captain in the NHL next season and the third-youngest in NHL history.

Only Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) and Vincent Lecavalier (Tampa Bay) were NHL team captains at a younger age than Toews, who turned 20 in April.

The Winnipeg native also wore the ‘A’ at UND as an 18-year-old sophomore. He’s the youngest player at UND to wear a letter.

“There’s no question that he’s a natural leader,” UND?coach Dave Hakstol said. “He’s absolutely driven to win and goes about everything in the right way. He’s a consummate professional. We saw that here from the start.”

  4. NHL rookie of the year Patrick Kane insists he didn't win $500 in a bet with Blackhawks teammate Jonathan Toews along with the Calder Trophy.

Kane beat Toews and Washington's Niklas Backstrom for the award, which was announced Thursday night.

“I knew better,” Toews said. “I knew what was going to happen. I wouldn't take the bet.”

  5. From a Patrick Sharp Q&A:

    Q) What are some of the most interesting comments or questions you've heard about your Blackhawks teammates -- whether it's opponents like Kane and Wiz, or Canadian teammates like Toews and Duncan Keith?

    A) There’s been a lot of questions about the Hawks actually, which is probably a good sign I think. We were able to bring Jonathan Toews' nickname to Team Canada, so we’ve got guys calling him "Mr. Serious" now, which gives everybody a good chuckle in the room -- especially the Chicago guys.

    Q) I have to confess I missed that moniker, though it certainly applies. When did it start?

    A) I think it started toward the end of the year. It’s not really an insult or to make fun of him; he’s just always so focused and takes everything so seriously. So we nicknamed him ‘Mr. Serious’ and it kind of stuck with him on Team Canada as well.

    Q) Today's an off-day for you, at least in terms of games. What are you doing with your down time?

    A) I just finished battling with a couple guys on Xbox 360. We were playing NHL 2008. I was playing against Toews, Cam Ward and San Gagner. We just had a little tournament here so it’s pretty fun. Shane Doan’s kids were in the room as well. Make sure if you include this that I was beating Toews pretty good.

  6. Attention all jersey lovers out there:

Tonight during pregame warmups and in honor of Blackhawks great Bobby Hull, J. Toews wore number 9, don't know what will happen with the jersey. That is a rare jersey as I'm guessing it will never happen again, so keep your ears open (I will to) in case that jersey goes up for sale.

The jersey is up for auction at the Blackhawks store. Starting bid is $2500
