    You're kidding me, right?

Nick Bjugstad, Hudson Fasching, Mike Reilly, Alex Goligoski, Eric Haula, Seth Helgeson, Erik Johnson, Phil Kessel, Nick Leddy, Paul Martin, Aaron Ness, Kyle Osposo, Kyle Rau, Nate Schmidt, Jordan Schroeder, Bradky Skjei, Thomas Vanek, Blake Wheeler...

I'm sorry, I'm a Gopher-hater like most of the rest of you here, but saying that the talent on Minnesota's roster as of late has been D2 or lower for a long time is preposterous.

Now, as fsr as 2016-2017 goes, I hope this team finds a new leader in the mold of Drake Caggiula.

Read it again.  It was a tongue-in-cheek reference to their fans.

His stats from his Freshman year were so good they weren't even quantifiable, I'm impressed.

Taylor was turning into a very good NHL player, there was even a large article about him in the USA TODAY.  And then he had a horrible leg injury, and that was pretty much the end for him.

You let me know who you think is the "greatest UND player in thirty years" and I'll show you why you're wrong.

    Jeff Panzer.

Drake Caggiula is one of the most exciting college players I've seen, simply an electric player.

Gino Gasparini era, 1980 NCAA championship.  The Sports Illustrated article called UND's defense "The Trees of North Dakota" because all six were big and tall, and I believe that all six wound up going pro eventually.  Craig Ludwig was the leader of the pack and it included Brad Cox, Mickey Volcan, Howard Walker, Paul Chadwick, and Travis Dunn.  Ludwig had a long distinguished NHL career with the Montreal Canadians and the Dallas Stars, including a couple of Stanley Cups.

Marc Chorney was also a key member of that defense.  Walker and Volcan were plain nasty.  They knew how to lay down the thunder.

Does anyone know what the record is for points by a freshman at UND? There are probably some 80's freshman that put up crazy numbers but as far as recent players go, Boeser has to be getting up there.

    Kevin Maxwell  31-51-82

    Troy Murray  33-45-78

    Zach Parise  26-35-61

    Greg Johnson  17-38-55

    Tony Hrkac  18-36-54

    Perry Berezan  28-24-52

    Cary Eades  27-23-50

    Mark Taylor  22-28-50

But...but...but...Sandy won that natty five years ago!  I mean, nevermind the 8 out of 15 seasons with a .500 or worse record, 8 seasons with 16 wins or less (and cruising for a 9th by the looks of it), and a winning percentage of .503, he won a natty once and that's all that matters.

Hakstol is a good coach, and he has a lot of credibility in hockey circles.  But it is hard to defend seven consecutive losses in the Frozen Four.

Duluth and Omaha do not have the tradition, fan base, arena, or the resources that UND has to pull in top-echelon players.  There would have been something seriously wrong if either of those schools had a better overall record than UND during the Hakstol years.

  7. In a related story...

I was at a wedding this weekend, well outside of the college hockey circle.  While in the keg circle, some dude claimed to have played division I NCAA hockey for U of Illinois.

    I called BS.

He tried to argue, but I told the group where I got my undergrad and how I know specifically about every NCAA D-1 school in existence at that time and Illinois was not one of them and is still not one of them.  I said maybe he played ACHA D-1, but sure as sheet not NCAA D-1.   His story of his winning goals against Notre Dame and Wisconsin in NCAA D-1 play went down the toilet and out the door with him.

I get tired of these BS stories guys come up with about their former hockey glory when they think nobody would call them out on it.  Crap, my old butt would have probably outskated him in his youth, and I sucked and still suck at skating...

  8. I was checking out Sioux recruits at http://www.draftsite.com/nhl/mock-draft/2014/. All descriptions (minus a few spelling and punctuation corrections) in italics are from draftsite's writer, Bill Placzek.

Ryan Mantha's description sounds like he'll fit in as a traditional Sioux defensemen -- Big and Nasty:

"Has been man-sized since he was 16, and was converted to a dman due to his size and temperament. Has a big hard shot, and is good at getting the puck to his mates. He will need more lateral ability to close better, but he does a fine job of clearing the front and protecting teammates. Was named to the USA Developmental team playing in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament. Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge."

Very exciting descriptions about Gersich, Poganski, and Wilkie.

Shane Gersich: "Flyer with game breaking ability and snarl. Tremendous shot, powerful burst with a great feel for offensive. Can be creative with the pass or let go a heavy blast or one-timer. Strong skater with the ability to spurt through and around defenders and has enough edge to compete against anyone."

Austin Poganski: "Big wing who plays strong and fast. Has a powerful long stride and can carry defenders when crashing down low. Plays strong on the puck, with good hands and scoring smarts. Strong, hard competitor who wins in the battle zones, wall, and behind the net. Always keeps his feet moving and makes chances for himself. Also displays good East-West lateral ability. Much to like in this developing wing. Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge."

Chris Wilkie: "High-energy wing with great wheels, strong hands, a hard shot and quick release. Reads the offensive zone well and positions himself well in support. Strong defensive zone recognition and aggressiveness. He may be a bit undersized, but displays creativity, commitment and strong defensive end awareness. Great clutch competitor who plays smart both on the attack and in pursuit of turnovers. Has a good hard shot and strong handling ability. Relentless on defense, where he out-manueuvers puck carriers and uses his stick to take the biscuit away. Long term project who needs to read on ice situations better, and play accordingly."

A not-so-exciting description about Nick Schmaltz:

"Longer-term project who is not the sum of his parts. Displays good feet, vision, hands of the high-end level, but his work ethic is on the low end. Needs to be become an all around team-first player who helps his team get chances, and not wait for the team around him to provide him with scoring chances. Was named to the U.S. World Junior A roster for the Junior A Challenge."

Hopefully the writer's take on Schmaltz is wrong. Gerscich, Poganski, and Wilke could comprise the first line of a future national championship team.

Mason Morelli is projected as a fifth-round pick. How does Reg Morelli's talented grandson not end up at UND?

  9. I'm still trying to figure out how the scholarship situation is working out.

    The Forwards make sense:

    subtract Kristo, Knight and Rowney

    add Johnson, Tambellini and Murphy

    The Defense doesn't:

    subtract Gleason, Mac and Forbort

add LaDue, Thompson, Ausmus, Stetcher(?), Poolman(?)

Didn't Hakstol reduce the scholarships to St. Clair, Chyzk, and Gothberg after their recent underage-consumption citations?

  10. DiPietro signed a one-year deal the year before his 15-year deal. Snow was a cheerleader for the contract and was giddy about it at the press conference where the deal was announced.

    http://sports.espn.g...tory?id=2584306

DiPietro and Wang talked about a 15-year deal last summer when DiPietro expressed he wanted to spend his entire career with the Islanders, who made the Boston University freshman the first goalie chosen with the No. 1 pick in the 200 draft.

But hurdles regarding insurance of the contract killed those plans, and they agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.

Both sides were pressed to come to a new agreement quickly as the Islanders open training camp this week in Nova Scotia. Wang has a policy that players who aren't signed in time for camp won't play during the season.

  11. “He’s going to be an extremely skilled hockey player,” Hauge said. “He’s got a dynamic skill set and what’s even more impressive is how hard and physical he plays. He’s going to be a leader for us and I’m really excited about him coming into our locker room.”

The second overall pick is also committed to play collegiately at North Dakota.

“We think he’ll be ready to play college hockey after one season and hopefully, if we do our job, he’ll be a high-end NHL Draft pick,” Hauge said. “He’s ready to come in and be a marquee player for a franchise in our league and I think that’s what he’s going to do here.”

  12. But didn't Garth Snow do a great job rebuilding the Islanders...that gigantic contract for Rick DiPietro...AWESOME!

Speaking of which, DiPietro hasn't been mentioned yet...Boston University.

LOL right back at ya! I mentioned him in my earlier list.

  13. Some goalies that haven't been mentioned:

    Ken Dryden - Cornell

    Tony Esposito - Michigan Tech

    Curtis Joseph - Wisconsin

    Rick DiPietro - Boston University

    Glenn Healy - Western Michigan

    Jim Craig - Minnesota-Duluth

    Chris Terrerri - Providence

    Wade Dubielewicz - Denver

    Brian Hayward - Cornell

    Steve Janaszak - Minnesota

Edit: Glenn Resch - Minnesota-Duluth and Jim Craig - Boston University

  14. 4 goals scored and this team should win 9 outa 10 games but have to get secondary scoring more consistently. The top line needs some help.

Goaltending and special teams decide most games this time of year. UND didn't get average play in either category last night.

Zane needs a bounce back game.

If Hak was pissed due to effort and too many passengers Connor and Derek need to play tonight.

    Rodwell didn't travel.

  15. I'd throw O'Donnell back out there to see if a couple games off have helped him-

    Knight with Grimaldi and Kristo

    Rowney with Parks and Cagguilla

    Mac with Mac and O'Donnell

Pattyn with Gleason and St Clair

That would be a good lineup, too. O'Donnell has talent, so it would be nice if he could get going.
