  1. Sorry DaveK, doesn't look like our votes are going to matter. ;)

Apparently Western ND is more pro-nickname I hear? Still would be surprised if this got even remotely close at all. This is a wider spread than I was expecting.

Not going to matter? What a crappy way to look at the democratic process.

You got a vote. That's more than most people have been able to say throughout history.

  2. Funny I thought there were students sitting on the main level all the way down to the ice in front of the students sitting in the upper deck.

Who exactly is it that pays the bills? I don't think it's the students.

I've never been up there for a game as I'm there to see the game. I guess I don't worry about people that want to do something else as long as it doesn't bother me.

Moving a token number of students down to the ice level actually makes it worse. Whoopee, you've given a portion of the students a whole section! Now they are split up into 2 groups, making it even HARDER to generate a home crowd noise. Way to go!

I guess the "alumni first, students last" faction should have just lobbied for a minor league pro team to come to GF if that's what they really wanted. Everyone else gets the fact that a college hockey team is an extension of a college/university...which exists to serve college/university students. "We pay the bills"...whatever. Do they want to take over the dorms too? After all, as ND taxpayers they "pay the bills" in part there too.

My only major complaint about the bars is that it takes away any chance to give a large block section to the students. They could have dedicated one end entirely to the student body. No suites, no exclusive bars. Just let the students have an end where they can stand and not bother anyone behind them.

  3. Honestly, we didn't stand the whole time, but g*dd*mmit, we were into the game and cheering at the right times...and not just when the puck went into the net...People bich about the band but it used to really get the crowd going...of course at the old place, the 6000 plus in attendance were there to see the game; not there to be seen...

I was at this weekend's series (my wife got to ride on the Zamboni Friday... a lifelong dream  ) and I too noticed the lack of "loudness" from the student section. I guess it's probably age and looking back at things with rose-tinted glasses, but even during the drought of the early 90s, which is when I was in school, I would bet money that a half filled student section at the old arena was louder then the entire Ralph now....even for non-marquee matchups against the Seawolves.

But you know what? I don't blame the students. They're trying. Who's bright idea was it to confine the STUDENT BODY to the damn upper deck? Hey! Did anyone forget this was COLLEGE hockey? You know, an institution with COLLEGE STUDENTS? It should be THEIR arena, not some fuddy-duddy, kicking back in my leather seat fatass alumni. Eff the alumni. (And I'm one of them). Putting in that many suites, where bitchy people whining about foul language and their "views" getting obstructed would become an issue, was a mistake in the design of that arena.

Like everyone else, I was amazed by the building, but a little voice in the back of my head was asking "how does this help?" over many things I saw. A bar at either end (exclusive bars where you need special access no less)....why? One lady let us into the "organ" bar (I think that's what she called it) to snap a couple of pictures ("before the bigwigs get here" she said) and while impressive in and of itself, I couldn't figure out how it would help me watch hockey if I was ever "lucky" enough to be granted admission during the game.

  4. I was sitting right next to the ND section and had two of their fans next to me. They couldn't believe the Sioux fans display of support for their team. One of the guys just kept looking at me with this look of disbelieving amazement on his face. He's never seen the 'like of this' in any college sport he's attended. He loves us!! He also told me we should trade jerseys. I had on one of my green (to show support for the Irish)Prp jerseys, he had on a replica Notre Dame jersey. I told him 'next time'. :)

I'm proud of our fans. A large number showed up to the final game, wearing their colors proudly. No running home with our tails between our legs like some I won't mention.

    Onward to the next season,

    GO SIOUX!!!!!!

I will. Michigan fled Denver after Thursday. A few stayed for the Hobey, but not many. I was talking to some people at the Skill Competition and they said the bars were full of Michigan fans giving their tickets away after the loss. Depressing, Michigan football is my 2nd favorite team after the CU Buffs (D-I of course, UND would be #1).

There was one Michigan guy in front of us who stayed...but he apparently left his jersey at the hotel or at home for the Championship game.

    Sad...Gopher fans outnumbered Michigan fans.

  5. The best part for this Sioux fan in attendance was watching the Sioux faithful still going strong at the Can. The ones down in the lower bowl were damn near as loud as the BC and Notre Dame contingents.

By the end of the game, the Sioux fans and ND fans had bonded and were throwing the "GO!" "IRISH" chants back and forth. I think the Sioux fans had taught the ND fans a chant or two of their own.

    Good showing!

  6. Why are you worreed about a few posters if you are not worried about the players? The posters on this borad (my guess) are older than the players they are criticizing. That part is always frustrating to me. THEY ARE KIDS!!! Most of the people who participate on this board do not have a clue what it takes to get to this level. Appreciate their dedication and drive, remeber they are kids and enjoy the hell out of the success of the program.

I am not against the passion as all of us lives and dies with the Sioux but use some disceretion before you start a post attacking a player, etc.. I believe the moderateors should weed out this S____!

    BD

Big time programs like UND, UoM, Michigan are stepping stones to NHL careers. These are not "kids", these are young men, many of whom are about to become very wealthy playing at the highest level. This isn't some DIII program with a bunch of scrappy walk-ons. This isn't high school.

This program, and the elite athletes it brings in, can take a bit of criticism. It won't hurt their delicate feelings. I won't question a player's heart myself..but most definitely can question effort, decision making and skill level. Same goes with the coaching staff.

It's a privilege to play for the University of North Dakota, it's a privilege to watch them play, but this isn't Princeton, where just showing up was an accomplishment. You don't get a 100 million dollar arena to call home, you don't get 11,000 passionate fans every weekend, and you don't get the absolute best road following in college hockey and just expect everyone to pat you on your head and give you a participation medal.

1 thread was started with "Fire Hakstol" and I don't think there were more than 2 or three people agreeing with that statement. Yet it's been blown up into some mass movement to can the coach. 1 thread was started with the "Bash Joe Finley"...how many actual SS.com posters actually agreed with that sentiment?...yet again, many people seem to be latching on to that as if it is indicitive of some vast majority of sioux fans.

  7. The sun still came up this morning...may as well make the best of the rest of our trip. What are all of the Sioux fans who are "stuck" in Denver doing for fun? Tours? Sing Sing? other ideas?

The world's largest liquor store is up I-25 and Highway 7! DaveCo Liquors. Certified by The Guinness Book of World Records.

There are two casino towns just west of Denver. Central City and Blackhawk.

Drive down to Colorado Springs and see the Garden of the Gods.

Or just stumble around LoDo and drink.

  8. When would we have changed? After 4? It may have been too late. After 3? Maybe but most coaches hate having to changee goalies mid period. Mich got lucky that the 3rd goal was right before the period break. They could just change at the break. We really didn't have that option. Also, it was only a matter of time before the Mich O woke up. Ours, not so much.

Maybe if they would hate having 6 hung on them 3 Frozen Fours in a row a bit more than they hate changing goalies....

If Roberto Luango can get yanked mid-period, so can a college goalie. Now, maybe the coaches thought that a clearly rattled JPL was still better than anything they had on the bench. But that is even more damning as it reflects on how they recruit, train and prepare their backups. Is it wise to ride a single goalie for 2 years and have no credible backup with any reasonable playing experience?

Now it may be noble to stick with JPL because he got you this far...sort of "we're all going down on the Titanic together". But I think the rest of the team deserved at least some token life preserver. Some sign that the coaches were going to throw everything and the kitchen sink out there. If it wasn't good enough..so be it. But to not even try?

  9. Billy Sauer has to absolutely hate the Pepsi Center. Which could be problematic because he was drafted by the Avs.

We're left to wonder what a goalie change could have done for the Sioux.

  10. What's really needed is a public apology to the fans.

The fans did their part. We were here, we were pumped up, and we let the team know that this was going to be the REA west. And its not a cheap or easy venture to get down here. People came down without tickets and paid handsomely to get in. But here we were, and there was a lot of us. It was a freaking sea of green and white. There was energy in the building. It was a powder keg ready to blow. Instead, we had to endure that painful P.O.S. But like the fans we are, we stayed to the bitter end and even clapped when we scored; even though we should have just sat there silent.

We did our part, it's too bad the boys couldn't at least have tried to do theirs.

I'd have to agree. The fans were out in droves. Brooklyn's was insane 3 hours before the game. Even the expensive suites pretty much were dominated by Sioux fans. There was some serious support out there.

Sometimes it's tough to remember these are a bunch of not much more than kids, but you'd think they'd demand more out of themselves.

  11. Certainly can't be talking about firing a guy who gets you 2 games from the prize year after year. But I really would like to know what and how he prepares the team for the Frozen Four..and compare and contrast that to BC, or heck, even Notre Dame tonight.

What is being said in the locker room before the game? Hak has always seemed (to me at least) to be wound pretty tight. Taking over a program like UND, from a highly successful Blais, at such a young age will probably wind anyone pretty tight..but does anyone think it rubs off on the team at the wrong time? How can a team come out and play like that?

And talk about slow. Yeesh. Notre Dame would have run circles around us and Michigan would have looked like yellow blurs going by. That's speed.

  12. Have you ever been to Watkins? Great bar there a few years ago called LuLus. Just wondering if it is still open. Great place and you cooked your own steak out back.

No, never been out there. Come to think of it, in 12 years down here I don't think I've been farther east of Denver than the airport other than driving along I-76 a few times on the way back from Grand Forks for visits.

I've been all over the western part of the state, both north, south and central mountains...but never more than 5 miles east of Denver. Weird.

  13. that's bad weather? a light dusting is what we call it in North Dakota

I spent the first 24 years of my life in North Dakota..I know bad weather. From a ND perspective, 7in of snow isn't much.

Now...put 2 million people on the road (seemingly half from California and Texas) and see what happens when the roads get slick.

    Watch out folks.

  14. I live in Denver and will be at all three games.

I hope none of you NoDak folks are thinking you are getting a break from bad weather. We've got 7 inches of snow coming to the metro area overnight and through Thursday!

    Bring a coat!

  15. With your local knowledge where is the best place to park if coming in from the south of town?

Given that the game is on a Thurs afternoon, most of the city parking lots will be full or mostly full downtown. You might luck out, but it would be hit or miss. You'd have to walk a bit if you did find one..not too far, but the Pepsi Center is sort of separated from everything by Speer Blvd and off by itself.

I'd concentrate on the Pepsi Center Lots themselves. There is plenty of parking.

Or, park at a RTD light rail station down south and take the train in. There is a train stop right at the Pepsi Center.

  16. Porter's.

It came against the Gophers one week after Wheeler's OT goal so you had the payback factor. The shootout against Michigan added a lot of drama to the weekend already. The Gophers were a better team last year than the Badgers were this year. The Pepsi Center is a more dramatic venue than the Kohl....probably had more Sioux fans at the Pepsi Center too.

Oh, and I was at the Pepsi Center so it obviously was more dramatic.

  17. third straight with a major brewery in town...was there any doubt? BTW, you don't need to do the tour to drink the beer (for free) and they do some pretty good mixes with Killians. Also some girlie mixes with zima flavors.

Oh man I can't wait to get back to visiting Denver. Great downtown strip of drinking. For Mafia Man (and others) check out the strip club near convention center and Hyatt. Called La Habem (spelling?).

The only bad thing is that the bars are a tad on the small side near Pepsi Center. Any ideas on where alumni meeting is taking place? Normally the NCAA always gives the same venue information as what's been used in the past. Unfortunately, no one ever believes the UND alumni association that they need LOTS of workers and LOTS of BEER!

The gentlemen's club is La Boheme. Google search it, they have a website. There is also the Diamond Cabaret downtown.

And small bars near the Pepsi Center? Pshaw. Go to Brooklyn's. It's 50 feet from the doors of the Pepsi Center...the place is huge. Braun's is across the street too. Getting a bit further away you can hit Old Chicago's, Breckenridge Brewery, tons of others...and for the truly beer adventurous...don't miss the Falling Rock Tap House. 69 (good) beers on tap...plus tons of bottles.

Seriously, if you can't find a good place to drink in Denver...you're doing it wrong. Colorado is Beer Central.

  18. No way. I used to detest those snot-nosed Edina and Bloomington Jefferson kids who went to school at UND and cheered vehemently for the Gophers when Doug Woog brought his team to town.

Yeah, there aren't a whole lot of rules for fandom, but actively cheering for the most hated rival of the school you chose to go to is a big no-no.

I don't care where you went to high school. What you did and who you cheered for in the first 18 years of your life is more an accident of birth and geography. You choose your university/college. You better damn well better support it.

  19. I gotta add something to that too. The CC game last night was disgrace...the arena looked to be half-full. I swear no one here in CO cares about college hockey, none of the games are on tv unless they play the gophers

That's strange because World Arena is always rocking with Tiger fans when I go there. Sioux fans still bring a good contingent of course, but plenty of Gold and Black. One of the great arenas with lots of intelligent fans. I had tickets right on the glass next to the student section one time and got nothing but good natured razzing (and I gave as good as I got) with my Sioux jersey. Another time I went, they had mistakenly sold us seats belonging to a long time Tiger season ticket holder. They apologized and comped us 4 seats in row 2 next to the penalty boxes.

    Good people.

And you just have to check Altitude/FSN and Altitude 2 for college hockey games here in Denver. They move around a lot but DU at the least has tons of games on.

  20. god damn it, well only one thing matters, the WIN

ok so either way if we play Wisconsin or Denver we MUST play Sioux hockey or the Sioux will have a long trip back to GF.

i do not want to see oshie go out in a loss tomorrow, they have to step up tomorrow and play with intensity for 60mins.

i am going back to bed ill be here tomorrow ready for what is sure to be a great game.

can somebody find out if there is an internet video feed also post it or PM me or something, i would really appreciate it.

So whose hockey were they playing to win 5-1 (in a weekend of upsets no less) if not Sioux Hockey?

What is Sioux Hockey other than getting a win?

  21. I just moved to Denver and I'm dying not being to watch the sioux every weekend. I know in Minneapolis Sensors shows the games and I'm wondering if anyone knows of anywhere like that in Denver. Any help would be great!!

I've lived here for 12 years and still haven't found a place. If they're playing Denver you can probably bribe a bartender to turn on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. If the bar gets the Fox College package on a dish or Comcast, you can sometimes catch them on the Fox Sports North feed when they play the Gophers. A CSTV appearance now and then as well.

Other than UND alumni parties for Denver or CC matches, there really isn't that much of a "go-to" place. Love to find one though.

I'm thinking of going to Brooklyn's (right outside the Pepsi Center) for the Frozen Four though.
