  1. Congrats on the fine season Sioux fans. After reading through some of this, I know a lot of you are frustrated. Take it from a UNO fan, things could be even more disappointing. UND probably lost to the eventual national champion on the road by 7 points despite playing poorly. I will miss the NCC and the wars with the Sioux. Good luck.

  2. I guess I missed the part where stats were the defining criteria when I was playing in the NCC. Ben King was robbed and so was Ted Schlafke. I mean don't the coaches know they should be voting for whoever has the best numbers and not who is the best player or who is the most likely to beat you?

I know they spend every week breaking down film of every team in the conference versus us fans who follow our teams and see the opponents once every two years. Why bother with film study when the stats are available?

  3. Secondly, not a whole lot of D2 teams out there really want to step it up and want to schedual us in non-con game. We had supposedly had a deal two years ago to play Central Missouri, but they backed out of it. Plus, we did have New Haven schedualed for 2004-05, but they went and dropped their program in the summer, and nobody else had a date open that day. Its not like we don't want to play any good teams NC teams, we just haven't had anybody that really wants to play us.

Are the Lakers willing to travel? That's a big part of the equation. A home-and-home would be necessary and then maybe even that's not enough. I know UNO went to Tiffin and Western Washington with no return trip from them in 2004 just to fill out a schedule. USD went to Colorado School of Mines without a return trip.

GVSU could probably get a better game than St. Joseph's but it migh mean some taking less than optimal terms.

  4. Didn't UND go through the 2003 season unbeaten in the NCC? If UNO had a decent kicker, they would have won that year in Grand Forks. However, Superman (Jeff Glas) wouldn't let UNO steal that game.

  5. Rather than coaching, it just seems UND doesn't have the athleticism at the DL and LB positions (who are still young) or the rest of the league (especially UNO and CWU) made considerable upgrades.

I agree that UND does not have as good of players this year. At some point late last year is when the defense started faltering. The Sioux defense in the playoff game was much worse than the one I saw earlier in the season. I said that UND actually looked soft last year, which is something I have not seen for quite some time.

UNO's pass defense got worse last year too. UNO's rushing defense has never been the problem, it's been the pass defense the last 5 years. UNO is probably less talented this year on the front 7. They graduated two 3-year starters and one 4-year starter at LB. The defensive line is the same starting 3 from last year. Those guys are just playing with much more intensity this year.

  6. I thought Winona might jump Ashland because they got a win over a team with a winning record and had 2 more victories. I was hoping the Sioux would host Ashland.

  7. #1 UNO Bye

    #2 GVSU Bye

    #4 Ashland vs #5 CWU

#3 UND vs #6 Winona St

According to D2football.com, CWU is #4 and will host #5 Ashland. Winona St fans do not want to play North Dakota again.

  8. BTW...Congratulations to UNO on winning the last NCC Championship!

Hope to see you guys again in a few weeks...

Thanks. I would not mind seeing the Sioux either. I think UND will get to play two GLIAC teams. I will be wearing some piece of green clothing for those games.

  9. Congrats on the big win Sioux fans. That offense is just plain scary, especially if the Sioux just ran over the Huskies. I will watch Coach Lennon's show, but right now I'm picking the Sioux to win in Vermillion and snap that 20-something game win streak.

  10. I was more than a little surprised that SCSU was willing to play UND next year. I remember NCC teams backing out of games with NDSU when they moved to DI. Hedberg is a class guy and runs a class program. I think there is allot of respect from SCSU towards UND. I think SCSU programs look at UND as a model for DII sports.

When you say backed out, do you mean that NCC teams signed contracts with NDSU and then backed out? Otherwise, it seems to me that the Bison were the ones who did not want to play those games any longer.

  11. Here is the stat of the year for UNO. Three of the top 10 offenses in D2 (NW Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota) have scored a combined 3 points on UNO in the second half of their games. That is amazing to me and a credit to the coaches and players making adjustments and then implementing them at halftime. I respect all those offenses tremendously as each beat UNO last year by scoring over 30 points on them.

  12. I have a lot of respect for Coach Hedberg, but this is a game that UND absolutely needs to win. They have much more talent than SCSU, and really they should be up by a couple of touchdowns at the half. Hopefully no one is looking by this game on to next week in Vermillion, but I'm sure Lennon won't let that happen.

Tomorrow night in Omaha we have a HUGE game between South Dakota and Omaha. If South Dakota loses you can basically stick a fork in their season. They have a ton to gain by winning the game. If they upset the Mavs that makes the last two games all the more important for UND.

On offense and special teams, the Sioux are more talented, but not on defense. The Huskies are the best defense in the NCC though.

  13. Good game for the Sioux, especially the defense. That's impressive to go to Duluth and shut down that offense. The Sioux offense will be challenged next week. The Husky defense is the best in the NCC, but their offense is not very good. The Sioux should be in good shape. However, USD in Vermillion is going to be tough. Somebody earlier posted about where the old power football has gone. It's in Vermillion besides Omaha. If I were a Sioux fan, I'd be plenty worred about that game. The Coyotes have an outstanding offensive line.

Regarding a top 2 seed for UND, unless Grand Valley loses I don't see how that can happen given what happened last year with UNO having two losses and still getting the #2 seed over a 1-loss UND. Head-to-head is given a lot of weight. I think UNO could lose out and still get the #2 seed. I do not think they would deserve it though. I think UND is playing to protect the #3 seed.

  14. I wonder if in the future (transition-hell crappy schedule years), UNO would reconsider and send their football team to GF once or twice if the UND hockey team made a trip to Omaha?

That's an interesting barter there. I don't know if that kind of deal is done much or not. UNO shouldn't have any trouble getting football games, but the hockey schedule is the question. I think the hockey coach Kemp would be all for that, but I doubt Behrns would be. It would be a case of the D2 sport sacrificing for the D1 sport at UNO. Here's another question, would the Sioux even want Omaha up there again? It seems like a lot of risk and not much reward.

  15. since we got a random rutgers fan here, i am rootin for rutgers and the goal posts to come down. Just opend up another Kl boys. no wokr tomorrow.

After defending boorish behavior towards UNO's band, it figures you would root for a team whose fans chanted obscenities at Navy. It makes sense now.

  16. you might be right...down the stretch UNO hosts USD and has to travel to Central Washington - they should win both but you never know. GV has road trips to Northwood (.500 team this year) and SVSU (maybe a challenge because they're rivals) but unless the highly unlikely happens - they seem set to be the #1 and #2 seeds.

Even if UNO loses twice, I don't know that UND gets a higher seed. Just look at last year for an indicator. If these two teams meet again, it will be in Omaha.

  17. Good points, but let's not forget the history of this program under Behrns. After a big win like this, the Mavs will sometimes go on to lose a game that they absolutely should not lose. In 2004, they lost to Mankato on the last day of the regular season and missed the playoffs. In 2001, they beat UND in the Alerus Center and then proceeded to lose their last two regular season games. They limped into the playoffs and lost at Pittsburg State. I don't know if they have won a single playoff game during the Behrns era. Pat Behrns has become the Denny Green of D-II football! Do they have the talent this year to change that? Yes. But I will believe it when I see it. And I wouldn't count out our squad just yet. I wrote us off in 2004 after we lost to UNO in Omaha and look what we accomplished after that. If UND can win their last three games (@ UMD, St. Cloud, @ USD) they will have at least one home game (more if UNO or GVSU get knocked off during the next couple of weeks). The road will be tough, but not impossible.

UNO usually drops a game it shouldn't...generally on the road. I don't think the St Cloud game is a concern so it would be the Central Washington game if it were to happen.

UNO beat Pitt State in 2000 in the playoffs and then lost to NDSU in the 2nd round after having beat them in the regular season. Kind of like what happened last year with the Sioux and the Mavs. If the Sioux and Mavs play again this year it will be in Omaha even if UNO loses twice.

UNO's troubles in the playoffs is certainly an issue with us fans. Other than choking, here's a couple reasons why I think UNO has not done well.

    1) UNO has not played great defense with the exception of the 2000 team. That 2000 team has outstanding defense, but Lamar Gordon abused them in the playoff game after not doing much in the regular season game. UND has traditionally played strong defense and thus had better success in the POs.

    2) UNO has played really good teams in the POs. Here are there losses under Behrns: NW Missouri State (twice), Pitt State (once), NDSU (once), Saginaw Valley St (once), and UND (once). It's not as if UNO has drew an NSIC or RMAC team. The last two years UNO did not deserve the #2 seed over SVSU and UND and would have pounded Winona State or Northwood in the early rounds and the playoff futility would not be topic.

  18. All the defenses in the NCC are down lately. I have not seen a dominant defense in a couple years.

By the way, my definition of being dominated is getting pushed around and having another team imposing it's will on your team. UNO threw 8 passes in the game. Getting receivers open deep does not fit my definition of domination. Some of those passes missed because Freund was under pressure.
