  1. How good is Nick Schmaltz supposed to be? It is hard to get a read on him just looking at stats because he is not playing in a Junior league and he is still too young for the NTDP. Is a legitimate high end prospect? Like first or second round NHL draft material, or a later round, 4 year college guy?

    This is from the HFBoards

"Schmaltz is going to be a tough player to judge. Still very young, but clearly undersized, he needs to bulk up bigtime over the next two years. But again, I get to see the CYA, Mission, and Team Illinois very often, and Schmaltz was simply electrifying at times. He is in a Shane McColgan level imo....undersized by insanely gifted."

    But so was this...

    Schmaltz just committed to UND

    means nothing.

see Adam Erne and Anthony De Angelo for why.

I know the Schmaltz family, great people and firm believers in college. That is why Jordan hasnt bolted to the OHL as of yet, mom would go ape ****.

But as I said with Nick, from the years I have talked with him, his eyes light up more talking about the OHl then NCAA. Not saying he will go to the OHl, but if he does get drafted high enough, I think he goes to the OHL. Just my opinion, we shall see.

  2. He has a joygasm anytime there is a hint of a scandal at a big school (UND, Minn) and totally eats up any sort of feel good story from the small Minnesota schools, while for the most part ignoring or downplaying scandals at the small schools and resenting any sort of feel good story from the big schools.

If Frattin were an MSU player he'd be posting on his blog about how great it was to see a kid who made some mistakes get his life back on track, but because Frattin is a UND player he couldn't wait to head straight for this website to take a cheap shot at the school and make fun of him.

  3. VV may leave but he should listen to Jason Blake and reconsider. College is the best time of your life! VV is not an NHL player in my opinion and will be a careerAHLer... If Porter cannot make it as a regular how will VV??

I'm a big Porter fan but that comparison is hugely flawed, VV doesn't have Porter's speed but he is light years better on the puck and has NHL quality quickness with his hands. The only similarity I see is they both have NHL size. The ceiling for VV is probably 2nd line Center while Porters only shot is a checking line Wing, thats a HUGE difference in potential.

I really hope VV stays but I have no doubt Edmonton will be trying to get him to sign this summer.

  4. ok - so it was by the rules and NOT controversial - I'll keep quite

The not getting it part wasn't meant for you but for the guy who keeps claiming the Gophers are somehow gonna get in regardless of the the PWR for money reasons. You were right, it was controversial enough that they changed the rules specifically to avoid that situation ever again.

  5. you guys keep saying that about Sconny last year - but it was a very controversial sellection - you cannot deny that - right?

The selection was made based on a mathematical formula that had been made public before the season even started. This is not basketball, there is no room full of guys picking who gets to go, THERE IS NO CONSPIRACY. The reason it was controversial is because the system which everyone had been aware of all season long had a team with a losing record ranked 13th.

The NCAA has absolutely no control over who goes to the tournament at this point. I don't understand what is so hard to grasp about that.

  6. Calling him a Gopher fan is giving him far too much credit, he is nothing more than a forum troll. He never posts anything remotely thoughtful or helpful just inflammatory drivel in a attempt to make people upset.

I would say its not worth your time replying to him because that is the exact reaction he is looking for, but this is probably the most positive social interaction he recieves, and I would hate to take that away from him.

  7. Discussion is here:

    http://forum.siouxsports.com/index.php?sho...767&st=4580

He verbally committed to the Fargo Force and the Sioux. The commitment could just as well have dropped him in the major junior draft as those teams want assurances that a first round pick will show up. They may have had that with Clarke.

That discussion is on page 230 of a thread im sure not everybody reads, and if losing a recruit of this caliber to the Q isn't worth its own thread in the offseason im not sure what would be.

Part of me wants to be mad and hate the kid for the rest of his career but the rational part of me realizes that this KID is only 15 years old.

It's possible committing here was only a ploy or bargaining chip he could use for leverage in the draft but that decision most certainly comes from parents and advisors, not from the mind of a 15 year old whose only concern is getting to the NHL.

  8. Size won't matter when you can't stop them from going around you,aka Gerbe.

The Sioux allowed 73 goals (not counting ENG) over 43 games this year do you realize how ridiculously good that is?

Gerbe led the country in goals and scoring while skating around everybody on his way to almost single handedly winning his team the national title.

If you want to design our recruiting and defense around stopping one player who nobody was able to stop all year long and who will be playing pro hockey next year I would be careful what you wish for.

Personally im thrilled we will be continuing the tradition of molding huge bruising defenseman into future NHL players.

  9. I'm just as big of a Sioux fan if not bigger than anyone on here. I am not however someone who believes every single player that puts that jersey on is Wayne Gretzky either. Kozek reminds me a lot of another former draftee by the name of James Massen who accumulated 15 goals and 20 assists in 42 games his sophomore year. His junior and senior year he had thirteen points combined in 59 games. Massen had one of the best snap/wrist shots on those teams. Do you think the Devils were more interested in James after his sophomore year or his senior year? I would love to watch Kozek shoot the puck for two more years at REA, but from a business stand point he might want to take his cash while he can get it.

--Breakin face "A nice fellow once you get to know him"

I certainly don't take issue with you having that opinion, but do take issue with the facts you seem to be basing that opinion on such as...

This year Kozek was able to get open playing on a line with TJ Oshie and Ryan Duncan. There is a reason his numbers stalled when he was taken off that line chief. I don't see him being as successful on a line with guys like Vande and Trupp, or Frattin and Watkins.

As was pointed out he scored the majority of his goals BEFORE he played on the Oshie Duncan line and with those exact players you say he can't do it with.

  10. Yeah, I don't know who he is, but the arrogance is a bit boring.

That said, there are SO MANY regulars on here who are SO SURE that ANY Sioux recruit will come in and replace the Sioux who signs early or on those rare occasions actually graduates that I swear the Sioux could say that I, a 44 year old lawyer is coming in next year and a few of the cheerleaders would immediately post something about "Shep will pick up some of the slack left by Oshie" that it's just so hard to take this place seriously most of the time.

Look I've been a fan for over 25 years, will always cheer for the team, but I've seen TOO MANY hot shots come in here who leave anonymously.

As for Kozek, seriously, what team thinks he's pro ready or is he just the next Travis Roche (PLACE ANY OTHER NAME HERE) who wiles his time away in the minors after leaving school too early?

Well being that the Sioux have had 1 losing season in the last 14 years (since Blais took over) apparently those freshman have been doing a pretty good job of replacing the leaving players.

David Toews and Jason Gregoire are not ANY Sioux recruit as you put it, they are top end talent with a very good chance of making an immediate impact on the scoresheet. The incoming class is the most talented since the insane year that was 2005, including both scorers and role players.

  11. Gregoire and Toews will have an immediate impact as playmakers next season, so there will be more options than Vandevelde and Trupp as linemates.

Kozek could definately get first unit PP time next year if he sticks around which would boost his point total as well.

Of course at no point in this thread have you let facts get in the way of your opinion breakin face so don't worry about starting now.

  12. Firing a coach doesn't suddenly make a team better, not to mention it would be nearly impossible to improve on the success Hakstol has had in his only 4 years.

I really don't understand where all this hatred comes from. Take a step back and realize how lucky you are. With only one or two exceptions every other college hockey team in the country would LOVE to have the success we've been lucky enough to witness as Sioux fans the last few years.

I think some of you are just spoiled and are so lacking in perspective you don't even realize what the word means. The fans treatment of some of the players and now coaches is downright disgusting and in the case of Lee and Finley ignorant.

I only take solace in the fact its a very small minority of Sioux fans.

Congrats on another great season boys and time to start thinking about next year.

  13. Wow, thanks for that insightful fifth post. Can you let your daddy on the PC now? :glare: You don't think UND's fanbase travels well? Yeah, I remember my first beer...

What? My point was the fanbase always travels well and that's the reason it was noticeable the fans were booing. Maybe you should have stopped at that first beer....

  14. What?! A teams fans overreacted when one of their star players hit the ice. I'm shocked and outraged at this completely new development in sports. I think the notable part of the story is that UND had enough of a fanbase travel to make it noticeable.

I'm not sure why a writer would need to take a potshot at fans for something that happens constantly in every hockey game played across the country but I also don't see a reason to get upset over it those were definately clean hits.

  15. unfortunately for #7, I don't think the committee will look very highly on the elevator incident. TJ deserves to be considered among the top 10 players in the country for on and off the ice credentials. COngratulations to him for this honor. It was a great season, especially considering all the attention he warrated from opponents.

JPL does have a shot at the Hobey. While Porter is the favorite, a strong showing in the F5 and in the NCAAs, say two shutouts and a frozen four bid, could earn the award for him.

Best of luck to the Sioux nominees for representing the finest traditions of NCAA hockey and the Fighting Sioux program. These two young men are champions, no matter who wins the award.

Yeah its great to see Oshie on that list but he won't win it for the same reasons Duncan was able to win it last year over the other T.J.

It's also very satisfying to see JPL on that list after all the talk before the year started about him being the weak point on the team. He held his emotions in check far better this year and I can't remember a single game where he seemed rattled or out of focus.

  16. Personally, I thought every penalty called was legitimate.

And if there would have been NHL refs, there wouldn't have been a single minute of 5-on-5 play. The stick work (hooking, poking, hacking) that these teams were doing was ridiculous.

Yeah I would much rather watch that than the travesty that some of the OT games turned into last weekend, multiple checking from behind penalties not called and players being dragged down left and right.

If previous years are any indication the NCAA tournament will be called much tighter than the WCHA regular season anyway so you may as well get used to playing that way now.

  17. 3 seasons.

Gosh, there's nothing that makes me more nervous than a guy who commits to UND with 2 or more seasons to go before suiting up.

St. Croix and Clarke are both guys that are/would be great additions to the Sioux, but the MJ interest in them are so high that part of me thinks there's no way they'll end up in Grand Forks.

The times they are a changing.

I don't think its possible to understate the impact Toews success will have on UND and college hockey in general.
