  1. When you operate on appearances only, then it is much easier to jump to conclusions. So, yes, I expect Hakstol and Co. to recieve plenty of flak over this regardless of how this came about.

That being said, this isn't the first time this summer this has happened. Michael Dorr did this to UMD. He committed to UMD, then withdrew and went to UMN.

I agree with whomever it was (dggoddard?) who speculated that the reason why Gregoire did this was because he only committed to DU in the first place because they said he would come in 2007 whereas I believe (unsubstantiatedly to be sure) that UND only offerred him a 2008 slot. Since DU asked Gregoire to stay until 2008, I'm thinking Jason decided to take the closer school to home with the same options.

I'm happy to have Jason, but I also hope everything is kosher with this.

Now to get Toews and we'll be set through the 2009-2010 recruiting class, I think.

As someone close to the family I can tell you that Jason is thrilled to be part of the UND Fighting Sioux family.

At no time did anyone ever contact Jason or his family after he verbally committed to Denver in an effort to persuade him to change his mind. The UND staff were nothing but professional and ethical in their handling of this difficult situation. It's also important to know that Denver treated Jason exceptionaly well and Jason wishes them the best in the future.

Whether he could play in 2007 or 2008 never had any impact on his decision to change his mind. Jason simply had some time to reconsider what was important to him, which is family. He realized that he wanted to play closer to home and that UND could offer him everything he ever really wanted and needed to ro reach his ultimate goals. He didn't take this lightly but he ultimately had to be true to himself. UND is where he wants to be.

  2. I don't particularly care how this might be shaking out either, but keep in mind:

    a) It's just a rumor at this point

    b) Perhaps Denver guaranteed to bring him in this year and UND was always talking a season later. If Denver changed their mind (and went back on their alleged word), Gregoire may have come to the conclusion that he didn't want to commit to a program that didn't deal with him plainly. All things being equal maybe he would have commited to UND in the first place.

    c) It needs to be stressed that b) above is totally hypothetical, but it does give a plausible explanation of how Gregoire could switch his commitment without "dirty pool" on the part of UND. Everything to date indicates Hak's ethics are impeccable and would not actively recruit a player that has verballed elsewhere. Not to say it's impossible, but I'd be very surprised if it turned out to be the case.

  3. Can't take em all anyway. It still leaves David Toews,Nash or whoever the coaching staff chooses to recuit

Is a verbal commitment binding? I see kids changing their minds and going to the OHL instead of NCAA. But what if a kid wants to go to a different school and he hasn't signed yet? Can he switch? Is this ever done?

  4. I am the parent of a player currently being recruited by UND as well as other schools. I read your posts with interest and feel that I might be able to shed some insight on the recruiting scene. UND is certainly one of the best programs out there but there are many other very good programs as well. You have to understand that choosing a college is very difficult. There are a lot of factors involved and the hockey program is only one of them. The coaching staff, quality of life, proximity to home, facilities, academics, culture and opportunities for life after hockey are just some of the factors that come into play. Not everyone is destined to be an NHL player, although that is every kids dream. As a parent you want what's best for your child. As a 17 or 18 year old player you may be lacking the wisdom required to make a good decision. Parents must be involved in the decision process. That's their duty as a parent. At some point a kid makes a commitment and hopes it was the right decision. You should never chastise a kid for not choosing UND. Most kids do what they feel is best for them and they don't hold any annomosity towards the schools they didn't choose. Only time will tell if they made the right choice but either way the choice was made and they have to live with it. That choice will impact them for the rest of their lives, well after their hockey carreer is over. There may be factors at play that nobody but the player and his family understand. While I understand that trying to figure out why decisions were made is fun and part of the reason for this thread, it's important to understand that it's a very tough decision for a kid to make. And I might add those decisions are not always right. Good luck UND.
