  1. 7 WDA member hockey schools:  BHS, Century, Minot, Mandan, Dickinson, Williston, Jamestown.  8 EDC member hockey schools:  North, South/Shanley, Davies, WF, Sheyenne, Red River, Central, Devils Lake.  None of these schools will ever be Class B or whatever you call the lower division, unless there enrollment drops below the Class A minimum.  The AD's would never go along with it because then you have to create a lower division in every sport so the bottom teams could be competitive.  Bismarck Legacy will add hockey in the next couple years bringing the total to 16 Class A schools playing hockey.  Wahpeton-Breckenridge, another Class A school,  has played as an independent in Minnesota for almost  a decade.

That leaves four current teams for Class B, G-PR, Bottineau, Hazen, and Mayville, so even if you add Watford City,  Langdon, and Crosby you don't have enough for a Class B league to be sanctioned, plus it's wrong to even list Grafton-Park River they would choose to play up.

Minnesota Section 8A is always won by EGF, TRF, or Warroad, how is that fair to Bagley-Fosston, LOW or Kittson Central?  8AA is Moorhead's to lose every year, where are the change.org petitions for Minnesota?

  2. Central - 4 West Fargo - 2

West Fargo very, very chippy team, numerous runs on Central players, checking from behinds, blatant trips open ice. Not much talent so I guess that is what they have to go with.

It's good to see a Central fan calling someone else chippy. GFC has been a complete embarassment to the Redskin tradition the last couple of years. Its one thing to be down but have some class. I think they broke the all time record for misconducts last year. Hopefully this years crew will be better.

  3. I am going to run a poll. Just post your top ten teams from the East and West combined and I will average the posts together.

    These are mine:

    1. Grand Forks Red River

    2. Fargo South

    3. Grafton Park River

    4. Minot

    5. Devil's Lake

    6. Fargo North

    7. Bismarck

    8. Jamestown

    9. Bottineau

    10.Williston

    1. Red River

    2. South

    3. Grafton

    4. DL

    5. North

    6. Bismarck

    7. West Fargo

    8. Jamestown

    9. GFC

    10. Minot

  4. I thought Fargo South was very unimpressive tonight. Danny Wurden is a solid player but he and his other D mates looked like they just threw the puck around sloppily instead of making crisp passes...maybe Red River's forecheck was too much for them. I also noticed that Fargo South's lines were different in the third period; if anyone has any reasoning for that I would be very interested to find out.

"We played a terrible game. We're a very selfish team, we're not very disciplined and we don't work very hard. We have the most talented team in the state and we play as 20 individuals." Dean Wilson in todays Fargo Forum.

  5. I can't say I know first hand on how these things work but I believe the games are treated no different than a practice. Except you play alumni instead of working on your forecheck, break-out, etc... . I would assume they are not reffed by paid officials and are treated no differently as far as the legality of the games go as a practice. That is the only way I can see such games occuring without it affecting compromising the structure of the season and number of actual games played. I hope that makes sense.

I think they have to be counted towards the 21 game schedule. Red River and Central did not play in holiday tournaments last year so they probably had room in their schedules.

  6. During the last 13 years, the west has had some teams, particularly Minot, that have been as good as the East. Some of those teams have choked badly and I don't know what it is out there. It is not a lack of talent, in my opinion, year in and year out. When I was in high school in the early to mid 80's, we competed very well with the East every year. The west competed very well with the East for years after that. I do not know what has happened since.

The recent response just sounds like some juvenile, idiotic banter that some East ND centric types have, particularly younger ones who may have recently graduated from high school. The reason why Minot's program used to be strong was because Dean Blais was there from 1976 or so to 1980 or 81 and Bruce Olson was there then too. In Bismarck, the program was strong because they had coach Peluso. The west needs more of those types out there. If I were on the school board in Minot, I'd be trying to lure Bruce Olson or some like-minded coach out there. There is no question that Minot's 2005 team was the best in the state but choked per usual....at least per usual since 1993. Some do have a good point in that the west has not been out of the consolation round since 1992 but I do not think that it is because of a lack of talent, at least in Minot's case.

Bismarck Century beat Fargo North in the first round in 2001.

  7. I think the point NDM49 was trying to make was that Jamestown doesn't put up more than 3 a game on the big 4 which is the class everyone is putting DL in. But I would hold my remarks about a team that NDM49 obviously doesn't know much about until after I see them play their first few EDC games.

I know that DL graduated two defensemen that are playing junior A hockey. Alex Olsen is with Bismarck and Kenny Lybeck is with Dubuque. I would not trade Red Rivers D or Fargo Souths D for what DL has left on the blueline. If Jamestown can get 5 against DL, I bet South, Red River, and Grafton can too. We all know DL has talent but the other teams practice to.

  8. How can you say no players in North dakota will even get to 40 points when players like Eric Meland from RR,Kyle Everson from DL and Zac Welding from J-town are still around. Everson has 2 hat tricks in his first 2 games and probably will have a 3rd coming up on thursday against Shanley. Welding had 4 goals and a assist in his first game alone. On top of that, Welding will be playing in the west which will make his points even easier. I would guess Welding with atleast 50-60 points figureing every pass his team makes is to him. They look for every shot to be off his stick. But don't get me wrong, you cant judge his skills by his points. He never backchecks and it shows. In DL the 2 centers welding was matched up with scored 3 and 2 goals. But yes i agree with everyone when they say OVERALL the states skills are down.

I would have to predict GPR over North. Graftons fowards will overwhelm north. I think if GPR were to have the worst D and goalie in the state they would still come away with a win over north. GPR's fowards will run over their fowards then fly by their D all night. I predict 6-1 GPR.

DL and Shanley thursday. Shanley is way down and DL is already better than they were last season. DL has a solid goalie and 2 very fast and impressive lines. THeir 3rd is shaky at times but they also seem to be able to get things done. In my opinion i think DL overall has the best D in the state. RR's 2 starting D are not comparable but DL has 4 strong smart and fast D. Shanley doesnt have much of anything but a lot of non-experienced sophmores. Shanley is building a team for next season. DL played with South last year at state and these are all the same kids but now they are better. May i remind you all of DL's goals scored at state were sohpmores, and one called off in the south game was also a soph. These kids will run with south and RR but will fall short. NO doubt will they suprise every team they play all season. 3rd in EDC. Thursday I predict DL 9-0 over shanley.

You give up 5 at home to Jtown and you think your D are the best. When is the last time Jtown scored 5 in a EDC game that wasn't against Wahpteton? 5 or 6 years ago? DL will finish 5th or 6th.

  9. Last year's Mr. Hockey Paul Weisgarber scored the game winning goal tonight for the Waterloo Blackhawks in their 4-3 win over Cedar Rapids.

In high school hockey tonight West Fargo lost to Bismarck High 6-3 and as previously noted North beat Century 5-4 after leading 4-1 after two periods.

Did you attend the North-Century game? How did the refs call it? Lots of Penalties? I heard the Shanley-GFC game had about 30 penalties.

  10. "your wrong Jamestown beat West Fargo 4-3 and Jamestown was playing JV and Varsity players against all Varsity teams"

If you honestly believe that Jamestown was the only team playing JV players I feel sorry for you. I'm sure that the other teams were playing it like the Stanley Cup finals. I bet every team in ND and Mn that scrimaged last weekend played jv players that is why they don't count.

  11. I look for Jamestown to have a very successful season this year in the west. They return Welding as well as Cameron Leben, and I believe their goalie Enderle. The west this year in my opinion will be way down, leaving Jamestown to battle in the top 3 with Minot and BHS.

I wouldn't count out Century or Williston, I think those five teams will be very evenly matched.

  12. If you live in towns like Watford City, Sidney, Rugby, Langdon, or Mayville, Junior Gold is High School hockey. They don't have a choice. Bismarck, Minot, and West Fargo no longer field teams. The majority of the kids that play JG in Fargo or Grand Forks do so because they have been cut, would be cut, don't like the coach, or are ineligible to play high school. There are some good players but the bottom ends of most teams are closer to Bantam B than high school.

  13. Anyone want to try out doing what ND Pride did last year and give a scouting report of each team, if he doesn't want to do it?

ND Pride did a nice job last year. Hopefully he will go for it again. I think the Bruins will win the EDC by at least three points. GPR and RR will battle for 2nd. The real mess will be spots 4 through 7. North, DL, GFC and WF all have a chance at fourth place. It will probably come down to tie breakers to determine those spots. Shanley 8th, Wahpeton 9th. As far as the tourneys go any thing can happen.

  14. I agree that the defensive play of Souths forwards will be a huge determining factor in how successful they are this year. As for metz i am 90% sure he'll be playing for South this year, after only playing a few games of varsity during his sophomore year and then playin midget minor in omaha it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the high school game. Anderson did play varsity for Shanley and West Fargo as a freshman and sophomore but saw very limited varsity ice time for South and when he did play he made too many costly turnovers. As for Red River i would expect Pat Arnaeson to start in the net. I've seen him play a few times on select teams and looked solid. I dont see Meland putting up the same sorts of numbers he did last year to due to lack of support. Red River will need some forwards to step up if they expect to compete with the offensive depth of Grafton and South.

Red River will have an outstanding power play with Galbraith, Ladoucer, Meland, and Vigen. I think Meland will get his share of points. If your going to post about individual high school players try to be positive, the South defensemen mentioned above and a couple of guys from North took more than their share of abuse on this site last year.

  15. I think we are getting a little trigger-happy thinking that Williston is suddenly going to be competitive year in and year out in the west region, much less the state. Williston has had a couple good groups of players, most every school has experienced a year or two in which they succeed, but in most cases it is not very long lived. Maybe last year williston beating the bismarcks and minots would not be concidered as much of an upset, but to say that this trend is going to continue and the gap will continue to close is a little premature. When was the last time you remember saying that central beating west fargo was an upset? I cant remember the last time that was the case, and i dont think it will happen again for a long time. This is just an example of how some things change every year and some things, (such as red river, fargo south, grafton, bismarck and minot being in the state tournament) are more likely to happen than the sun rising each morning. However, a change in the standings from year to year is fun to see and keeps us guessing.

  16. They tied Williston and the almighty Grafton. 3 one goal losses to Minot, 1-0 loss to North. They had a young team. A Sophomore starting goalie, who did damn well and will be even better this year. This year they'll have another asset - "experience". They only lost 4 players. A large percentage of their scoring came from their to-be Junior class.

You watch. They won't be HALF as bad as you're making them sound. I didn't say they're gunna take it to the East this year, I said they'll show up to play every game. Hardest workers in the State. I'll remember your comment during the season this year. We'll see who's right.

Just cause they played in the West don't mean they're gunna get throttled. It'll be a tough transition, but give them some damn credit. They are a good team. They used to be in the East and did good, and the next two years they'll do good as well.

I never said Devils Lake was bad or that they would get throttled. My only point is that DL could finish 7th just as easily as they could finish 4th. Sorry If I offended you. I hope your team does well.
