  1. Um, keep in mind that we went into this agreement THINKING we Standing Rock in our back pocket after His Horse Is Thunder was voted out by his constituancy and was replaced by Charles Murphy, who appeared to be a pro namer. And all the while Murphy never ever came out and said the tribe would vote on the issue. You wanna blame someone first, start with the deal makers on our side who worked this deal based on assumptions.

What you say is true, but once again, waiting on Spirit Lake for their responce was pre-settlement.

  2. Next to Myles Brand...I blame this guy!!!!

Ding ding ding ding ding!! we have a winner here!! I don't know why the AG would agree to UND having to get permission from two tribes instead of one. That, to me, considering Standing Rocks stance, was the clincher. BUT!! It didn't have to come down to this, if Spirit Lake would have spoken up from the get go when everyone was asking them instead of sitting on the fence saying nothing, it wouldn't have even come to this. Many of you will disagree with me I'm sure but I blame Spirit Lake first. The NCAA was waiting for a responce and they said nothing. I refuse to feel sorry for Spirit Lake, their approval didn't come until after the settlement agreement. Just my opinion.

  3. Grand Forks grew 7.1% even with the base downsizing continuously over the last 10 years, I don't think that's bad at all. They have GF at just under 53,000 people now, I'm guessing we would have been around 60,000+ if the base would have been left alone, but it happened and now it will be going the other way...............to what degree I don't know, but up is better than down.

  4. Whats up Grand Forks County? Ten years and it gains 200 people!

    Newspaper article

The downsizing of the base over the years hasn't helped, but now that's hit rock bottom and is going to start going the other way, that should help. As for Grand Forks itself, I've often thought that our city leaders have no vision and they are content with stagnant to slow growth..............just my opinion.

  5. I would like to see better hockey state-wide too, but I don't think holding the state tournament in an inferior venue out west is going to help those western teams get better. It starts with the youth programs. Unfortunately I think the only way it is ever going to happen is if the western teams start traveling more. We're lucky here in the Fargo/GF area to have a lot of good competition within an hour drive in any direction, while they don't have that advantage out west.

I think state should stay at the Ralph as a reward for the teams that qualify to play in the best venue. However, I do not like that GF gets both East Region and state. I think now that Fargo has the UP Center they should host the East Region tournament. I've heard a rumor that state is going to be at the UP in a couple of years. If so, then GF should have East Region that year. I don't think the regional and state tournament should ever be held in the same city in the same year. Too much of an advantage for the teams from host city in that particular scenario.

I agree with you as far as Fargo/UP hosting the East region, but State? not sure I agree with this, UP (or is it called Scheels Arena now?) seats just under 5,000 right? they would be turning people away, not every game, it depends on who is playing, but there would be games where they would be.

  6. Oh I get it now: Expectations aren't met because people compare it to the Fargodome.

The Fargodome gets more big name concerts more often. Go figure a city greater than what four times that of Grand Forks. :silly:

There is a promise of concerts to compete with Fargo and that's exactly what it did and does. Sorry if you don't like those particular concerts especially when you compare them to ones going to Fargo or Minneapolis.

How many of these/those concerts had come to GF before the Alerus (and I guess after the old civic)? Zero. Only had the under 3,000 seat Chester Fritz or Hyslop Arena.

You might not have been one of them but people were happy to watch Britney Spears/Neil Diamond/Aerosmith/Kiss/Ozzy Osbourne/Black Eye Peas/Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (hosting 18,000 people not possible without the Alerus) in Grand Forks.

Did you enjoy Jake Owen and Bullriding the Alerus gave the citizens of Grand Forks the opportunity to enjoy not even a month ago?

Are you going to the Harlem Globetrotters? The Mens Show? Tim Mcgraw?

Again Goal fulfilled. Sorry it doesn't meet your Fargodome expectations.

Maybe you wanna have a list of what you consider "big name" concerts and what percent of them you think grand forks should be able to get on a three year rotating basis? :silly:

PS. Who is Page and Plant?

Yeah, if you compare Fargo's metro population to Grand Forks city population, big difference, but I know your trying to make a point here.

  7. I would have no problem in supporting the Spirit Lake Sioux Nation. They have been at the nickname's side this whole time. Now the Standing Rock thats a place I will NEVER go. I have nothing against the people (its too bad they were not allowed to vote) but to the tribal council who didn't give their people a chance to be heard thats where my problem lies. They are corrupt and that is reason enough for me to never thank them.

Bull! I've said it before and I'll say it again, where were they and why didn't they speak up before the settlement when UND said they had Spirit Lakes support and the NCAA wanted to hear it from Spirit Lake but they sat on the fence with no comment?

  8. 4:00 I believe is a good start time (providing it doesn't conflict with other sports) because a lot of people do work on Saturday's. I feel a later start time coupled with better quality teams coming to town (which will happen with the Big Sky) will mean a larger attendance.

  9. NDSU did what was best for NDSU at the time, just as UND did what was best for UND at this time. As for the two praises you are giving Kupchella, I'll agree with one of them, the fundraising campain, but not the waiting to make the move to DI, I still would have liked to see UND move at the same time as the SU's. As for Roger Thomas.........no praise. I had/have mixed feelings about the Big Sky, different time zones, travel, etc. But it was the right move to make and I am happy for UND. As for the Summit league and the MVFC, a football invite or even some kind of assurance we would get in the conference in the near future would have helped, but nothing. As for Tom Dupple, plain and simple, he screwed up in my opinion, he should have offered UND at the same time as USD instead of playing around with the nickname issue. What we were doing with our nickname and how we were going about it was fine with the NCAA, but Mr. Dupple put himself above the NCAA and said we had to settle the issue before the Summit would even look at us, that, ended up hurting them in the end.

  10. It certainly could be management, I just think GF is a pretty small market, (97,190) compared even to Fargo (200,102) to be looking for big concerts. Whatever concerts we get here, I feel lucky due to the size of the market.

That said, if we can't get concerts, (for whatever reason), there must be attempts made by Venuworks to get other money making events to the Alerus.

You wouldn't think that the size difference in the two markets would be that big of a factor considering that the two markets are only 70 miles apart and they feed off each other, but, I'm sure market size is factored in, they have to have something to go by.

  11. Does anyone know the approximate count of students attending football games at the Alerus? I'm still of the mind that student attendance would increase if the games were brought back to campus. Although the Alerus is not that far off campus, I think marketing for the game would be a lot easier on campus.

The best year at Memorial had an average of 9,150 in 1976 when the enrollment at UND was just under 8,900. UND's enrollment has grown 40% since then. Grand Forks has grown as well.

I myself would love to see football back on campus and I agree with you that student attendance would also increase, but, in doing so, I feel you would lose the climate controlled fans. Would it be a wash? not sure, but if I remember correctly, when the games use to be played at Memorial Stadium, the students stuck around a little longer and didn't bolt at halftime.

  12. I can't much argue with this.

I just hope the bleeding heart liberals that call themselves educators don't get too high of a say.

Now's the time students and alumni! Start flooding the administration with acceptable nickname suggestions! With "acceptable" being relative, surely.

UPDATE: I thought a little more about this and I think we should consider doing the following:

Make Spirit Lake an integral part of the nickname change process. Maybe they can come up with an idea that can help us keep something of the tradition?

    [/quote

    Why?

  13. Your usual teams are at the top, this season I would say the team to beat would be GF Central. Two losses this season, one to Apple Valley which I beleive they were outshot that game 27-22, the other loss was at Grafton, they lost 2-1 but outshot the Spoilers 49-15.......but I know shots on net don't win games, but it is a measure of how the game was played. Post season though, anybody can beat anybody. Grafton, come post season and state, they are always a scary team.

  14. I went over to Bisonville.com and read some of the things they are saying about Chapman resigning and surprise surprise UND is getting blamed by this because Joel Heitkamp is a UND supporter...2 people on the legislators were UND grads and they say Kelley should resign because UND has gone over in costs....Ok #1 Heitkamp and UND did NOT spend money on a presidental mansion for NDSU that was over budget by a million bucks they did not take a $22,000 trip to Washington D.C. I just can't believe they could say Kelley's over budget was close to Chapman's....NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!! Leave UND out of your problems NDSU...look at your leader not the campus north of you.

Yeah, I went over there (Bisonville) and was reading as well, they are upset and lashing out at The Forum/Amy Dalrymple, KFGO/Joel Heitkamp and yes, UND. Hearing them talk about Chapman The Great and how people were out to get him, how they won't read the Forum anymore or listen to KFGO ever again, it kinda reminded me of "Leave Brittany Alone" with Chris Crocker.

  15. According to UND, 12,287 is a sellout.

There are 18 suites--some have 12 seats, and some have 18 seats, according to the Alerus Center web site. If it's like the Ralph, there's room for a lot more people in the suites than just the 12 or 18, but the the web site doesn't give a total capacity for the suites to my knowledge. The web site still lists football capacity as 13,500. It doesn't seem like the disparity (1213) can be entirely attributed to the suites. It's possible that the standing-room areas behind both end zones may be included in the 13,500 number, although I have no idea if standing-room tickets are actually sold.

The e-mail from the Alerus Center that was posted on here a while back (thought it might have been you that posted it UND92,96), regarding seating capacity, I remember them saying in the e-mail that UND does the official attendance count at the Alerus but that UND only controls the bowl seating, it has no control of the suites or the standing room only. So, not sure if they are included in the 12,287 sellout or not.

  16. Question.....................The end of January the Herald had a piece about the Alerus Center and how Steve Hyman, the Alerus Center Director, would like to see 31 million spent on the Alerus Center over the next 21 years for updating and improvements. What I found a little surprising is how there was no mention or plan for adding more seating to the Alerus Center. Why wouldn't they want to address this future problem and try keep their largest tenant, UND football? I'm a little curious.

  17. I'm not saying this is set in stone, but I have good sources (both from GF and Fargo) that believe that the state tournament will eventually rotate between the REA and UP Center. I'm not sure how many more years the REA has the contract for this, so it still will be a few years off...and I'm sure things could change in that time. Also, not sure if it would be an every other year thing or not. Just reporting what I've been able to find on this subject.

Well, if true, it makes no sense to me. For years Grand Forks could never get the class A or class B basketball tournaments because we didn't have the facility/seating to hold them. Now, that isn't an issue anymore and they would award the hockey tournament to Fargo and the Urban Plains Center knowing they would be turning fans away?

  18. From what I've read the money isn't there right now for the addition without hockey, so trying to fit hockey into the plan doesn't seem logical. The Urban Plains facility could bid for the hockey tournament and probably will at some point.

Your argument about South Florida football isn't exactly the same as NDSU for hockey. USF started playing football in 1997 as a I-AA program, moved to I-A in 2001 and joined CUSA in 2003 and then to the Big East, a BCS conference in 2005.

Are you advocating that NDSU play Division III hockey for a couple of years, become a Division I independent and then get some breaks and move into the WCHA in 8-10 years?

The East Regional yes, but the state tournament? I'm not saying that they wouldn't bid for it, but if that happened and they were ever awarded it, people would be turned away. The Urban Plains Center holds 5,000 people, state tournament draws between 6,000 - 9,000+ depending on who is playing, not sure the state would want to be turning people away. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  19. I was a little uncomfortable when I read the headline, but less so after reading the whole thing. It sounds like less than 25% of this guy's duties will be guarding Chapman & guests. The bulk of his duties will be acting as a liaison between the campus and city police departments and the president. With the increasing size of the university and the addition of the downtown campus, I can see where a security presence is needed in Old Main; not for protection, but for communication. If that individual happens to be trained and licensed to carry, it makes sense to also use him in those cases where light security might be needed. Most home football games see Hoeven sitting next to Chapman, and Chapman is normally mingling among business, city, and state leaders when he attends basketball games. Why not have a single security guy close by just in case? Of course, the guy chosen could stand to lose a pound or twenty and could also use a new wardrobe.

I don't know where the UND campus police department is located in relation to administration, but at NDSU, they are quite far apart. Maybe UND doesn't need this sort of position yet, but if the downtown campus that Kelley is talking about comes to pass, they may need to reevaluate. After Virgina Tech, things like this are a small price to pay for the ability to react quickly, correctly and effectively in a crisis.

Is this the norm though at colleges and universities to have a police/body guard for the university presidents? I haven't heard of it till now.

  20. Why do NDSU guys call us the "trucks" or "firetrucks"? Thanks, I am just curious.

Because "we have hockey?".... J/K, I hear that "hockey" line all the time. It was started in Bisonville a while back and I believe it was in regards to changing our name and what we should call ourselves.

  21. I didn't see the show last night--are you saying this was a one-game contract in which UND presumably got a small guarantee, or just that SE won't be coming to GF next year (but will in a future year)?

It sounded like just a one game contract.
