No use debating this but there will always be coaches who dislike other coaches or schools. I doubt that their not being considered for this job will alienate them to UND. But it may........

I am not sure what you mean by "UND calling on those programs to get recruits". I am not arguing your point, I just don't know what you mean.
[uND-Williston and Whapeton (Olson,Irwin), are both junior colleges. Thus UND recruits from junior colleges. Not so from Mayville, hence the 2/3, 2 out of 3.]

[it is an interesting thought my fellow Sioux, but I am going to go out on a limb and say that your last paragraph is not in the realm of possibility. To put Bemidji State in the same breath as a destination for a coach is just not feasible. Look at the tenure of the past 5? coaches at BSU vs. UND. UND is a destination, BSU a possible stepping stone to UND.
I know as a fact that 1 possibly 2 of the applicants at BSU were going to be assistants on the staff of one of the applicants at UND.
As for as Smith, Olson, Irwin, are concerned, it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall when the UND calls on those programs 2/3 to get recruits. Considering none of the 3 got interviews at UND.

I'm willing to give Jones a chance. My big concern was the apparent demotion, but supposedly there is more to that story which mitigates things somewhat. If Mac and Jake vouch for him, then that's enough for me to give him a fair shot to prove himself. I'm not a big Alford fan as a coach, although I liked him a lot as a player, so the fact that Jones was an assistant (apparently a ways down the totem pole) on Alford's staff is not, in and of itself, all that impressive to me, but Jones is the new coach and deserves the support of the fans.
It will be interesting to watch what happens with the Bemidji State opening. I have a feeling one of the coaches not selected for an interview at UND could get that job (Smith? Olson? Irwin?), which will make our games with them the next few years quite intriguing.

First, as a Sioux fan, Grand Forks resident, and basketball supporter, I want to wish Coach Jones all the best of luck and congratulations to you.

Bottom line will we have a new Coach Today, if we do I hope everyone can get over their objections thaqt they have had, and rally behind whoever it is and give them a chance to see what they can do. Who knows what can happen.
[i agree whole heartedly about supporting the new coach. Bleeding green has never meant looking to an outsider and than flipping a coin to choose the best of 3 bad options when so many better exist and even applied from what we see.
"Who knows what can happen", That may be the Title to Bunnings and Ralstons new management book. Would that make Roebuck a Ghost writer?

[believe it is just his college degree]
[does anyone know who had The General, Robert Montgomery Knight, Coach, as a reference? Did he get an interview?]

Lowe is required to have his masters for that position and will be finishing his work on it this summer. At least that's what the talking heads on the radio were saying.

[Good morning Sioux land! I think I'll go to the doctor today, I'll pick the one that has never held the scalpel before. Think I'll have my house built today, how about little Tommy next door, he does well with Lincoln Logs.
Can anyone tell us where Jones got his head coaching experience? I for one am going coockoo for cocoa puffs thinking that one of these candidates that are being interviewed might be driving the same bus that the 2 past legends drove (Coaches Gunther/Glas).
Anyone go to the forums besides me? Jones looked like a hall of famer compared to the recent high school coach interviewed. Just not a Sioux hall of famer. Lets not SETTLE committee please. Go get someone.]

LOL...that was funny.....along those very same lines, if Ben Jacobson had applied, now the head coach at Northern Iowa, he does not have his masters, so he would not have had a chance to get this head coaching position, would there be public outcry then....even more than now i would be willing to bet!!!!
[NC State (Div. I) Past national champions (Dickie V.) just hired Sidney Lowe. Coach Lowes highest level of education: High School Diploma!
Guess the Smith and Stewart should have stopped at high school.

For the love of God, somebody please get through to Buning and get him to call Craig Smith for an interview. Has anybody else ever been to Mayville? Have you seen the town? If you can recruit and build a nationally competitive team in Mayville, think of what you could do in Grand Forks. He's had 10 years of experience in college basketball in this region. He's been to 4 National Tournaments and 2 Elite Eights. As a head coach he's been to a National Tournament every year and he has an Elite Eight appearance already... Too bad he doesn't meet those brilliant preferences, though... Too bad for UND...
[it will be sad 747, you think of the potential candidates in our back yard, Smith, and from our own yard, Stewart, both winners by the looks of it, and yet no interview given by a committee made up of "whose yard?/]

Does anyone else find it ironic that the MBB job is a Masters requirement in it, yet Gene R. does not have a masters?? So with these requirements if Gene applied....he would have been screened out?? Something is wrong with this process!
[May be hollow, but a resounding echo/]

Have you seen his resume. For those of us who have not, what can you tell us?
Why does everyone think that it is such a "step" from one level of college basketball to another?
Mary College is a Division II school is it not?

Why do people get all excited about Mike Boschee? He's been mentioned a couple times. As a head coach his record is 24-52 at a lower level college. Sure he's a local boy, but so are coaches Dave Vonesh, Todd Olson and many others who played for UND. These coach's records as players should play a minimal amount in the interviewing process. Boschee should hold off applying to a larger school until he can put together at least one above .500 season in the lower ranks.
As far as Pete, I went to school with him at UND and am glad to find out where he and Julie landed. As good a friend as he was in college, I still don't know if I could give him complete 100% support for this position at this point in his head coaching career when comparing him to some of head coaching careers of the other applicants. Maybe someday, but not today. I could see him as head coach at Mayville, Wahpeton, Minot, Mary, etc. first in the near future. I think he'd be taking two steps up the ladder instead of one at a time. I could see if his record mirrored Roebuck's, but Roebuck had won a couple national titles by the time he interviewed at this level... at the same time recruiting and coaching another sport (baseball).
I would agree that if they're going to interview the 3-4 that they picked, I don't think Pete or Mike are any less qualified and could be brought in. Obviously the committee sees something I don't when looking over the applicants. I doubt the committee will be done interviewing after these initial candidates... or at least I hope not because I'm not overly impressed.

[it is my understanding that the new head coach at Bemidji was going to be an assistant at UND had another candidate got the job.]
