  1. I agree especially about NDSU in the case of women's basketball.........................both programs are in need of an injection of fan interest, and that game would do alot for that. I blame Roebuck for it, as he (along with NDSU's AD Gene Taylor) are the last of the holdovers from the bad-blood of the DI moves for both schools. I think Gene has a real personal dislike for NDSU and genuinely wants nothing to do with them.

I could care less about SDSU. I think there is some sort of administrative embargo going on with USD due to the collapse of their deal with the Big Sky. They both would be nice because the fickle fans of Grand Forks are familiar with them, but in the long run, Creighton, Idaho, Duquesne, and Northern Iowa are better opponents coming to the Betty................

UWGB released their schedule and they have the Phoenix in Fargo on Nov. 11th and Grand Forks on Nov. 13th.

  2. It was on the road. USD is having a fairly nice season so far. Their schedule hasn't been as difficult as UND's, but they're 6-5 and have four dI wins, including two on the road. Northern Arizona has an RPI quite a bit higher than UND, so that was a pretty good win for the Yotes.

Bison fell in Flagstaff this season. Decent Yotes win.

  3. I think SoDakSt is the exception in terms of jumping up to the next level being immediately competitive. Aaron Johnson proven to be very adept at navigating the transition from DII to DI. And while it is understandable that regional school want to emulate the Bunnies success, folks have to recognize that more often than not, that's not going to happen and that it will take 6-7 years to do a successful transition.

  4. Gonzaga will make a lot of teams look silly. Their point guard is one of the best in the nation.

Not many teams will make the transition to Division One as seamless as SoDakSt. But it helps to play these tough foes as it gives your young players a chance to see what it will take to win at this level.

  5. How bout Mandan's coach Greg Amundson to coach at NDSU? He has a pretty good track record(6 in a row and 8 of 9) and it seems to be that he is a pretty good recruiter as well.

Maybe as an assistant. I imagine that the criteria for the had coach will be some affiliation with a Division One program.

  6. With five seniors leaving, and only two recruits coming in, the new coach will have some work to do. Even though the Bison legacy is considerable, if NDSU wants to recruit a firebrand coach, they need to come out with a plan to upgrade the BSA or build a new facility. That's the kind of show of support that is going to attract a coach to Fargo.

  7. The Bison women have improved alot since last season when they would have been lucky to finish in the top 5 in the NCC, but I still don't think they are ready to match up with UND women yet. When NDSU went D1 I thought their women's team would make a pretty easy transition but they skidded right off the track.

I think many folks (Bison fans and otherwise) thought that as well but I'm not sure if those expectations are realistic. Two successful programs that jumped from Division Two to Division One in the mid 1990s didn't achieve great success until almost a decade later. Southeast Mizzouri State, who lost to the Bison in the Division II national championship game jumped up the next year into the Ohio Valley Conference. Back then the transition period from D II to D I was two years instead of five. It wasn't until 2002-2003 that SEMO finished above 4th in the conference. Lately they've put in a good run in the OVC.

Portland State was a mainstay in the Division II national tourney in the early 1990s. They jumped to the Big Sky immediately upon tranisitioning to Division One (which is not a strong women's basketball conference outside of the Montana Grizzly), and only once have they finished in the top 5in the conference.

I believe South Dakota State's success is much more the exception than the rule for schools moving up to the next level. I don't know how much the Jackrabbit's YEAR ONE schedule of primarily Division One opponents played into being able to recruit strong players who were willing to help see SDSU through the 5 year transition. From a fans perspective, I think watching your team play Division One teams as opposed to a meshed schedule of Division Two and Lower teams in your first year of transition would be more exciting even though the team might lose quite a few games.

  8. Montana State Bobcats swing through the Dakotas this weekend. I'm sure that after playing both Dakota teams, a number of people in the area will be making a comparative "analysis" of how the Bison and Sioux fare against a common foe.

I think the Sioux women will do well against Montana State. Last year, they let the Bison starting center go off for a near double double. Kimbrough and Langen should have a field day.

  9. With the implosion that seems to be going on at Minnesota (multiple players transferring), I wonder what the odds are that a player like Broback could end up in the NCC for her senior year? She's officially left the program as of yesterday. I wonder how happy Roysland is? Granted, she only has one year left, but it sure doesn't look like the Gophers will be very good next year, and there seem to be some problems there.

Kelly Roysland is now the only Senior left with the Gopher women's basketball team. Liz Podominick has left to pursue her Olympic experience. Most say Broback is done with basketball but I remember the rumor a few years back that Roysland was interested in a transfer to UND. If she did so, she would not have to sit out a year. Has anyone heard anything?
