  1. I still think Eric Herbel from Bottineau is as good as any player in the state.

I guess I still stand by this quote. Many say that he doesn't deserve it but have any of those people actually seen him play. I doubt it. He is as good as the others so quit bashing him. Look at the team mate differential and that offsets the competition differential. Put him on RR or South or GPR and you would see the point totals.

  2. Here's an interesting nugget.

A UND alum who graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering was recently the subject of an article regarding NASA. This alum (Karen Nyberg) has been working at NASA for several years and is going to be entering space in the near future. I believe she is even scheduled to be on the next mission.

Not bad for the little engineering school at UND, huh.

  3. Just because that's the way it's always been is not a reason to maintain status quo.

Programs can be moved to other schools.

UND has well established distance education (only accredited distance learning engineering degree programs in the country). Nursing at Bottineau could go to UND, as could water technology (through UND's EERC).

Horticulture, wildlife and forestry seem to fit NDSU's mission. Move those there.

This state has 11 public colleges for 640,000 people. It's too much. Combine that with today's technology (on-line learning, UND distance education) and there's no need for a college in every other town.

Yes, this would seriously hurt Bottineau, and Devils Lake (Lake Region), and Mayville, and Valley City, and Williston. I'd take the last step and close Wahpeton too (one tech school in Bismarck with outreach space for the remaining campuses). But reality right now says we're subsidizing those towns with schools and we have an older, and older population trying to do it.

At first I'd say spend the money that was used on the campuses in those towns trying to spur economic growth there. But long-term those towns need to either do right things to survive or face the choices made.

Over the long term, "constitutionally mandated" or not, some of the schools in this ND need to be closed for the fiscal health of the whole system and state.

PS - I have direct relatives who graduated from 3 of the 6 schools I'd close. Don't think I wouldn't get punished for my plan.

The problem with this solution is not just the financial impact on these communities but also the financial impact on the students and their families. Many students are able to stay close to home, earn 2 years of education (toward a 4 year degree) and do so at a significant savings in comparison to attending UND or NDSU. The demographics at a school such as Bottineu's is significantly comprised of small town ND students and Canadian students. Many of these students are not prepared to attend a large university and would not be as successful in the large university setting. Myself for example, I attended Bottineau for 2 years and received an AS degree (while figuring out whayt I wanted to do) and did so basically for no cost. I was then able to attend UND and graduate with an engineering degree. Worked very well for me and my family. Your plan does not allow that to happen as easily fanancially. So maybe the result is a loss of students?? Just something to ponder.

  4. Bottineau 9? I realize they are a little more competitive this year, but you may be taking it to an extreme putting them up there.

It might be a little high but they just beat Mandan and Dickinson this past weekend. They haven't lost for a month, if they can continue it into Jamestown and Williston why not. Dave Hoff, Bottineau's coach, should be given some credit for Bottineau's improvement so I don't think it is all that overrated. They seem to be getting better as the year goes on.

  5. Well said.

Keeping and even expanding Mayville and VC is analogous to the small links in the chain telling the big links what to do.

Mayville and VC should be JC's in the same vein as Bismark, Williston, and Wahpeton. Minot and Dickinson should be teaching schools/liberal arts 4 years with no master's programs and no research. Maybe close down Lake Reigon and Bottineau but otherwise keep them as two year. Then NDSU and UND of course are the doctoral research centers.

Why would it make sense to close down Bottineau. Because it is in a samll community with an enrollment around 600? These are not good enough reasons for me. MSU-Bottineau has several ciriculums in horticulture, forestry, wildlife management, water technology that are not available in other universities in ND. They also have a nursing program that many rural students take remotely. Another issue involves the the financial stability of the college. To my knowledge the school is managed very well and is not having finanacial issues as Mayville is facing. I do also agree with previous statements that closing ofr these schools would be devistating to these communitites. Most of the small colleges are well supported by the community to help ensure their survival. The discussion of closing these schools has been ongoing for 20 plus years and I personally don't see it happening any time soon.

  6. In reply to UNDhockey 22:

The real question is how do we compare talent across the state. Have you seen Herbel play and compared him to others that are discussed in this tread? My guess is not. I have seen him play but not all of the others from GF and Fargo. I put it out here because most of you think hockey does not exist outside of GF or Fargo. I think there is a place for a west player in this discussion. And if you have not seen him play how can you say he does belong. As far as being selected to elite teams or being recruited here is what I know. Eric Herbel has been on the 88-89 selects with all the GF and Fargo players discussed in this topic. He played AAA midgets last year but came back to ND for his senoir year. I do know the Bobcats are talking with him not sure about various colleges.

  7. Well I'm not living in ND anymore, I have a question about the pt system in High School hockey.

Anyone heard anything about giving a team +2 for a win, but subtracting a point if they got too many penalites, or even 1 coach getting booted? Something to this effect, I heard it @ the bar so I took it with a grain of salt.

The person said they are doing this in Peewees and looking to move to the older leagues with it.

Is there any truth to such a silly rule? T them up, suspend kids for poor sportsmanship. But if one team scores more than the other team, there is no reason that the losing team should get to possibly come away with more pts.

In youth hockey there is a thing called fair play points. The winner gets its two points as normal but each team is eligble to earn an extra point called a fair play point. The team receives this point if they keep penalty minutes under 14 minutes (I think this is right but may vary from age group to age group). Have not heard about using this past the Bantam level.

  8. I may just be retarded, but I've been wondering this for a while. Why do they have 2 refs and 1 linesman for the HS games?? Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

The refing procedures are dictated by the National Federation of High School Hockey. This system is used nationa wide. I think alot of it is to keep the older officials in the game. One ref systems require alot of skating for the ref and many of the older officials can not keep up. Just my opinion though.

  9. Yes it was serious. That Century game was for 2 points. Also, I am pretty sure that Century had more than the usual number of Varsity kids playing. The game was for two points though.

By the way Century hadmost of there varsity playing. But when I first brought up this topic I was not taking about Bottineau being a team going to state, only that they havea very good player in Herbel. I see others talking about the players in the state and feel the Herbel kid should be mentioned with the other good players in the state. If anyone has seen this kid play I would like your opinionon his chances of going to the next level.

  10. Point totals are not always an indicator of how well one plays. In most years if you are able to put up 30 points in the West, that probably correlates to around 15-20 points in the East. Besides, all point scoring is a function of how your team plays and the opportunities that they help you create. If you put one of Fargo South's top 4 point getters and put them on West Fargo, their scoring output will decrease because his opportunity to score will decrease. The same goes for if you put West Fargo's top player on Fargo South. He's going to get more points. My conclusion- points do not always provide a solid testimony to the strength of a players skill. Sometimes they do, but in North Dakota High School hockey, they can also be very deceiving.

I agree that point totals do not always indicate a players skill level. You're indication about the point totals in the west not corrolating to point totals from the east is also fair but you must also look at the team mates one has. It is a lot easier to produce when you have a strong line. The Herbel kid from Bottineau is doing this without the benefit of alot of talent around him. Why is it so hard for everyone to believe that the West can produce a quality hockey player. This kid is as fast as anyone in the state and has alot of skill and hockey sense.

  11. No offense to bottinaeu but how bad would a team have to be to lose to them by six goals?

I cant believe you said that. Bottineau is alot better than previous years. Look at the scoring leaders and you will see the Herbel kid is at the top of the list and he is as good as the scoring total indicates. He is as fast as anyone in the state with a great shot. I just don't understand why you have to say such a thing.

  12. I know nobody cares about the West, especially the bottom half, but Bottineau will not be the bottom team in the West this year. More depth than usual (even have a JV team) and will surprise a few people. Look for them to finish at least 6th. Herbel kid was not on the team last year and is a heck of a skater.
