  1. Does anyone know anything about the Nor Pac Hockey League (NPHL)?

Someone called me today about a kid that plays for the Seattle Totems in that league (Tanner Schulze). They thought that his numbers were just great and he should be looked at by the Sioux. I've never heard of the NPHL, so I was wondering if they were contenders, like the same level as the USHL and BCHL, or if it's a cupcake league.

  2. I would too, the year before Kangas had a .930 save percentage. I was noting a slight dip in play.

Indy is only 3 points out of 2nd place. Kangas averages nearly 40 shots per game. Indy leads the league in penalty minutes. Not quite like Sioux falls team he played for last year.

  3. That would make a dynamite duo right there. However, Malkin and Crosby duo is going to be something special too.

Interesting---#1 Prospect Frazee or walkon Parise? Very Interesting!!!

  4. No, because this is the gloating type version of the other thread... I don't know what gloating is supposed to accomplish.

If he's gone he's gone. I don't know of many here who thought he'd be back next year anyways except those optimists. And optimists suck :)

    Viva le pessimists!! ???

  6. Here's a projection if things go to heck in a handbasket. I'd appreciate it if posters here would correct or project their own idea of a contingency.

The contingency is as follows: Lost to the NHL are Smaby, Stafford, Zajac, Oshie, and Toews. Marvin and Prpich graduate. Bina, as an optimist, is cleared to play again.

We bring in Forney, Vandevelde, Zajac, Genoway, and Marto.

Genoway replaces Marvin (based on similarity between rolls as both can play forward and defense)

Zajac replaces Prpich (No real reason behind this)

    Forney replaces Stafford

    Vandevelde replaces Zajac

    Marto replaces Smaby

Because Oshie and Toews leave early, UND brings in Trupp a year early (this of course assumes that Trupp is graduating in May).

This leaves us one forward short (replacing Toews).

This does change the outlook on our recruiting picture, and I think Marvin would commit soon after this because it would seem that he could make a quicker impact with the Sioux.

Now, NONE of this contingency is that terrible to overcome UNLESS Parise leaves early. That would put us in a bind as Lamoureax wouldn't have a tested backup. Nothing against Walski, but I'd love to have a guy who can step in and not lose a beat (like we currently have for the most part).

John Murray, a Goaltender in the USHL, seems to be highly touted among uncommitted NCAA eligible goaltenders as far as the ISS is concerned. I don't know if he'd be eligible in the fall (he is a 1987 birthdate IIRC) or if Hakstol and company think Murray would be a good fit with the Sioux, but it is a thought...

I think we can recover nicely as long as we don't lose a goaltender. What do you all think?

  7. Local notebook: Kangas mulls Division I hockey offers

    Sat, Mar 4, 2006

Prior to playing in last year's Class AA boys state hockey tournament, Alex Kangas was barely a blip on the recruiting screen for most top-flight college hockey programs. Now he is almost a cinch to land a Division I scholarship.

The Rochester Century grad had a standout state tournament in goal in 2005. Now, after a stellar season with Sioux Falls (S.D.) of the United States Hockey League (a junior amateur league), Kangas is being sought by some of the elite hockey programs in the nation.

This weekend he is visiting Minnesota. He has already had a recruiting stop at North Dakota. He has also had talks with St. Cloud State, Michigan State and Boston College.

"My top two choices are North Dakota and Minnesota," Kangas said. "Growing up in Minnesota, you always want to be a Gopher. But I'm weighing my options; I have a lot to think about."

Both Minnesota and North Dakota currently are playing junior goalies. So Kangas might play one more year of junior hockey. Or, his decision could be altered if one of the colleges loses a goalie to the pro ranks.

"It's probably two years from now," he said of college. "But if one signs and goes pro, it would be next year."

Kangas is 18-6-1 in goal this season with Sioux Falls. He has a 2.02 goals-against average and an outstanding .930 save percentage. He was a league all-star and at the midway point of the season was rated as the 13th best North American goalie by NHL Scouting Services.

"It's kind of new," Kangas said of all the attention he's been getting. "It's a dream come true. Hopefully, it gets me to the highest level possible, hopefully the NHL."

  8. As for the Marto/Genoway thing... I don't see either one as a tradeoff for Smaby. Marto has more of an offensive upside (potentially speaking... and from what it appears, it will be in the form of assists) while Genoway has a flexibility of assignment (Lee Marvin-esque). Neither are physical defensemen.

I really wish we could have gotten Gryba. Oh well.

As for Thiessen... Thiessen would be great. Kangas (unlikely) would be good too. Whomever we end up with, I hope he doesn't turn a Siembida.

I like where we're headed at the Forward position. Landing Aaron Marvin would be really neat.

Here are a few Kangas links to the Sioux - he has played with a few of the current players with the Mn Blades - his dad coached former Sioux Jason Notermann in baseball to a State American Legion Championship. Sioux have a 50-50 chance to land him. He visits the Gophers next week.
