  1. I have to believe Arnason did not make it because of sentimental vote for Deichert. Arnason played much better all season than Deichert, especially at state. Deichert let in 2 soft goals and was probably the difference in the championship game. Also, how did the Seaburg kid from Bismarck make it??? Also, 8 forwards and 7 defensemen? Strange?

everyone knows that the all-state team is laughable. stop trying to figure out why some kids made it while others didn't. it's useless.

  2. I think that is the all tournament team. The all-state team was posted in the Fargo Forum. If I recall correctly, it included: Sean Deichert and Dan Wurden from Fargo South; Tanner Bombenger from Fargo North; Tyler Swanson from West Fargo; Jarret Galbreath, Ryan LaDoucer and Eric Meland from GFRR; Zach Miller from Grafton-PR; Kyle Everson from Devils Lake; Eric Herbel from Bottineau; Andrew Seeburg from Bismarck; Hendrickson and Nathan Stremmick from Minot; Zach Welding from Jamestown; Colby Rehak from Williston.

There was also a goaltender from Dickinson. I can't recall if Michael Hillman from Bismarck made it, but I thought so. I apologize if I missed anyone. This is from memory.

Hillman did make it. the other goalie was Kovacs from Dickinson.

  3. The West had a pretty decent showing this year. They showed some depth, playing in 3 close games. Ironically the only blowout was by an Eastern team who had been in the West up until this year (or was it last year). Bismark has some very good youth teams that should translate into some decent HS teams in the next few years. Also the population of Bismarck and Williston has been growing at a steady pace. More numbers typically equal better quality. Minot continues to have talented teams that cannot win when it matters. Minot probably has more alum playing college/junior hockey than any other school (currently).

Based simply on population growth the schools I would expect to field the best teams over the next several years are RR, South and Bismarck High. The only other school that should have increased enrollment is Williston.

Despite the juvenile posts by junior24 and other HS kids that post on this site, the West had an ok showing this year. In past years I would say that 6 or 7 East teams would be in the state tourny if they still did the East-West play in, but this year I think it worked out right. Fargo North, Central and WF were not much better than any of the four Western teams in the tourny.

i think that what makes an eastern team better than a western team is the conference schedule they play. I think Devil's Lake really benefited from the move to the east and became a better team playing a more challenging schedule against excellent (for the most part) opponents.

  4. Pretty good wrap up puck, with a few ommissions, but hey you admitted the bias, at least your honest...

the few late goals you were talking about for Grafton were empty netters, it was a one goal game up until that point

and although I agree that GFRR was the more talented team last night, the Coyotes played with more heart, and the Roughriders didn't have a lead in that game until the beautiful Vigan goal with 2:12 left in the game. that individual play won the game, add the empty netter and the #1 team in the state barely snuck by the #3 team in the west. coach malm talked pregame about rolling four lines and playing six defensemen, well Galbreath and Ladeucer played over half the game on the blue line and their first line was the only one that did any damage, so I'm not sure it was as lopsided as you think, considering that was our #1 team in the state.

Good wrap though, should be another great day of hockey. And I agree with alot of the other posters here, why do some of you from the east feel the need to validate yourselves by putting down other teams from your home state? does it make you all feel better? Oh well, what do you do, hope we have some good crowds at the Ralph today. Nothing better than watching the HS hockey state tourney on a Friday... well maybe the Sioux beating the Goofers, but its close.

the Riders are the #2 team in the state right now...that's why they played williston and not bismarck century...

  5. how can u bash the east when they never lose the first day of the tournament.

bismarck beat grafton three? years ago. it happens, that's why they play the games...I am an east sider, but agree with the west kids that the east rips on the west way too much. its fine to be proud but there are limits...

  6. I heard two rumors this last week. first at the North-Grafton play-in game, I heard that Narveson was going to transfer to Fargo South. I also heard recently that Galbreath seperated his shoulder in the championship game against South when he attempted to check Logan Doeden. Does anyone know if either of these are true and if Galbreath can play this weekend?

  7. A lot of attention being given to a team whose season is done, but I digress. Against the top teams in the state; North beat Grafton 6-5, then lost 8-2 and 7-0. Against Red River, North lost 3-1 and 5-0. Finally against South, North lost 9-3 and 6-2. I saw two of North

  8. You'd think the "best line in the state" by your claim could come up with more than 1 goal in 2 games to finish out the season. Klein, Bombenger, and Bekkedahl was a very good line of forwards. "Best Line in the State?!?!" That is a pretty tough point to argue. That's like saying, if anyone disagrees that Grafton's Top Line with Miller and Hills isn't the best line in the state, they should call the coach and get a game tape; Or is anyone disagrees that McDougall, Powers, and whoever skates with them isnt the best line in the state, call Coach Wilson and get his game tape..

It's actually McDougall, Doeden, and whoever skates with them, but that's besides the point I'm sure...

  9. South's goalie must have had a really bad game since he only had 20 shots. I think South is getting worse.

South is just a bunch of individuals. They don't play as a team at all. If they want to win games against good teams they need to rely on their teammates instead of trying to do it all by themselves. I think that is why it seems as if they are getting worse. Every other team is just learning to play with eachother as a team.

  10. Looks like the State might be a little down this year.

I disagree, Red River played Roseau tough. Roseau is a very good team, one of the best in Minnesota. Roseau is ranked 7th on this power ranking:

    http://www.ushsho.com/mnrank.htm

Also, the second best team in the state played a tough game against the second best team in Minnesota as well. I think ND did alright, and although didn't win, they represented themselves well...

  11. I think Wilson hit it right on the nose about the play of his team. I don't think either team played all that well last night. Red Rivers defensemen played a pretty good game and South's were a little shaky. McDougall isn't a physical player in the first place because he doesnt have to be with the size of the team around him. He was the only player that really stood out to me for South as he set up both of their goals and was a threat for most of the game. Wurden's an exceptional defensemen but i think he logs too much ice time and started making mistakes because he was bagged. I think South was the more talented team but worked very poorly together. Although Red River may be less talented they used each other very well to break the puck out and to set up opportunities. As I said before, neither team played as well as they could and i would expect a much better game when they play eachother at purpur on a bigger sheet of ice. All in all, it was a good win for Red River and a good lessen for South that they can't just rely on their talent to win games.

I disagree about McDougall. yes he is a good individual hockey player, I don't doubt that for a second, but very rarely have I seen him pass the puck in the offensive zone to someone in a better scoring position. I know he has quite a few assists this year and he assisted on both of the goals last night, but most of his assists are second assists from making a break out pass or winning a faceoff. His first assist last night was by winning the faceoff and his second was a very good pass from the defensive zone to Hooey. very rarely will he pass the puck in the offensive zone, but instead he will try to be a one-man show.

  12. To me it did not look like either team brought their "A" game tonight. The game was intense down to the final few seconds, with South pulling its goalie. At times the game looked choppy, with players throwing the puck blindly and dumping the puck or icing the puck for no apparent reason. However, there were times when I was very impressed. I liked Russel Crary. He worked very hard, and looked like he was a pretty solid skater, with good knee bend. Eric Meland made some nice passes but other than that he did not really stand out to me. Ladouceaur (spelling?) and Galbreath both played solid games at the point and were very beneficial to the Red River breakout. I love the way they wait patiently for an opening rather than throwing the puck up the wings a$$. Danny Wurden had another solid perfomance, it looked like he was on the ice every other shift. South frequently wanted to take the big slap shot and it rarely worked in their favor. I think the big difference tonight was desire. Red River wanted it more than South and it showed.

I thought Fargo South was very unimpressive tonight. Danny Wurden is a solid player but he and his other D mates looked like they just threw the puck around sloppily instead of making crisp passes...maybe Red River's forecheck was too much for them. I also noticed that Fargo South's lines were different in the third period; if anyone has any reasoning for that I would be very interested to find out.

  13. I dont care about there wins and losses, I think that you can not determine the best team in the state by non-conferences games like south against white bear or RR against egf. Yes, Fargo South's win against WBL looks impressive but they had 2 empty net goals and also WBL isn't as strong as they have been in the past. Now in the case of RR and EGF, i went to the game and RR could have easily won 8-2 but Alex Christenson played unbelievable as he usually does, also in a rivalry game EGF, GFC, and GFRR always play tight games. Now as far as Grafton, West fargo, and Fargo North, how do we know that RR wont blow out Grafton and North, and West Fargo is always a scrappy team so if i were South I wouldnt overlook them. But the only way we will know for sure is to wait for early january in Fargo. RR vs. FS , start making your travel plans its gonna be a good one.

tough to say WBL isnt that strong when they have a guy who has verbaled to the gophers...

  14. South dominated the game and they also had a lot of break-aways. North had no defense and really struggled between the pipes. Logan Doeden for south got ejected for a "checking from behind" penalty. The north player was lucky he didn't get hurt. Good call by the refs. South scored two goals while on that penalty kill. They were tons of odd man rushes. The only offense north had was their first line, scoring two of the goals. North started out ok with two quick goals answering right back from souths early lead, but south was quick to shut them down. Who had all the goals tonight? Anyone?

im not so sure that it was a good call by the refs. it looked to me like the north player turned his shoulder while the south player was going to hit him. its tough to stop while you are in the motion of hitting someone...the original call was a boarding call, but the north captain talked the refs into a 5 min major and a game disqualification. i would like to hear what NDPride would have to say because i imagine he was at the game...South was definately the better team tonight, no doubt about it.

  15. Sean Diechert is a great goalie and will definitly be a Mr. Hockey candidate. However, when will we see how good he really is? Last year he did not face many shots a game due to the talent South has on the defensive side of the puck, and when he did see shots, where were they coming from? Poor angles. In my opinion this could hurt Seans chance at Mr. Hockey if it is taken into account. The coachs may tip there hat to a player on a weaker team who elevates his teams play to another level (Everson, Bombenger, Hillman, Hills (GPR)). Just a thought. I have no idea who will be up for Mr. Hockey, as far as I can see it is wide open.

its still early and a lot of things can change, but its tough to say he isnt showing how good he is when he stopped over 30 shots against White Bear Lake...but that is just one game...true success needs to be shown over a compilation of games.

as an aside, my memory isnt that great so if someone could say the past mr. hockey winners and their respective teams along with how that team finished at the state tournament that would be great. i couldnt find anything on the internet, but i believe that most winners played on a team that finished number 1 or 2 in the state...

  16. You're just mad because you want all the talk in the message board to be about Grand Forks Red River. Not everyone who posts on this message board has the same hockey knowledge as everyone else. And when a parents sees his team string together three passes and put the puck in the back of the net and his sons team wins 5-1 it is only logical to believe that they will think they have an alright team. So he comes on the message board and types his or her beliefs about how their respective team will do this year. If it is far fetched someone will tell them in a polite manner or provide logical reasons as to why their statements may be false. Not come on here saying how brutal their team is and that the only talk in the message board should be about "the big three" from the East.

I would love to see a team from the West win state. I would love to see Wahpeton beat Grand Forks Red River. I would love to see Dickinson tie Grafton. Why? Because this means the state is improving. If we can get more and more teams competing with one another and not have certain teams or conferences dominate we are headed in the right direction. Improve the quality of play over the entire state so we can provide equal chances to move on to the next level as our counterpart across the river.

speaking of the counterpart across the river, south won tonight 5-1 against #9 White Bear Lake (two empty net goals). maybe the state of hockey in ND isnt that bad...
