  1. Herbst made the list of finalist.

I agree with 92,96. This guy has done a remarkable job. The five year rule can be a guideline, but if the committee is not simply going to find the best candidate then they need to get a new committee. If that happens to be someone with 3 years experience rather than five who cares? Smith needs to be considered long and hard. If that is done and there are others who are found to be better candidates fine. If they don't look at him because of the 5 year experience deal, then I am starting to understand some of the problems we ahve at UND.

Can they recruit? If they can't the 5 years means nothing. Can they communicate? If they can't, don't bother. Can they coach and have they shown the ability to succeed? Are they willing to remain a D2 coach if UND stays D2 and are they willing to bring the program to the D1 level if UND gets over their inferiority complex and makes the right move?

I would hope Bunning didn't make the offer to Herbst then retract it. That would indicate a real lack of class. I had heard teh same story and I ahd also heard Buning had a guy from out east he wants to offer the job to but I would keep that in the rumor category. (you rumor police don't get bent out of shape).

  2. Very disapointed.

I'm hearing Bunning is sort of just laying back and waiting for the finalist to be weeded out before making a decision. Roebuck did not want the 5 yr rule in place. But the lady is really taking control and let him know times have changed. Very sad if true.

If true, I am extremely disappointed. I had considered it a virtual sure thing that Smith would not only get a phone interview, but would be one of the finalists. I'm guessing the finalists will probably end up being Johnson, Jaskulski, Fuller and possibly Gillespie. Unless Rico or Herbst get consideration, I doubt anybody with ties to the area will be among the finalists. When's the last time that happened for a high-profile UND athletic department job?

I find it a bit ironic that if this "rule" were in place 20 years ago, Roebuck (who is on the search committee) would not have gotten his current job. It would be very interesting to know whether he agreed with Buning and Ralston on requiring five years of NCAA experience.

  3. It's common practice to let the new coach speak to the incomming recruits before letting anyone out of their letter of intent. It gives the new coach a chance to convince the recruit to come to school to play for the new coach, if the new coach wants to honor the commit. On every LOI it states clearly you are signing with the institution not the heach coach.

I would expect that if the kid still wants to leave after the new coach is named, the kid will be given his release to go any where excluding another conference team.

This happens quite a bit and I can only name one situation where the kid was not given his release and that kid elected to go to prep school for the year.

Shouldn't we be hearing about Glass and UNI soon, the job posting ended last Thursday I think.
  4. Miles was offered the job on Monday night without a doubt. He was told he could bring Todd as Director of Basketball Operations, but he would have to hire all new assistant coaches. He sat on the contract until his annoucement was made, they promptly hired another coach. I know all of this is true, I have heard from two different sides.

Also on the UND front look for Dryburgh from the Wahpeton school to reopen his recruitment this next week. He will stay verballed, but will see what else is out there. Word around Fargo is that he called UND's AD and the AD said things that didn't make him feel comfortable about what's going on in GF next year.

What's the difference between "had been in talks" and "offered the job"?

I know I'm word-smithing, but it never explicitly says Miles was offered the UNC-W job, just that he is staying at NDSU.

  5. Why would I make that up? One of the NDSU coaches told me that Miles had the contract offered to him on Monday and he was sitting on it until yesterday. The hang up was that the hiring was just for Miles and he would not be allowed to bring in his current NDSU staff. Maybe Miles just told his assistants this, but I find that hard to believe. Look at all the other information that I have providend, why would I make something like this up? And for the record your crazy if you think NDSU would have promoted within. Todd didn't get the St. Paul Concordia job and I find it hard to believe NDSU would have just went along with the same staff moving up.

Do you have a source? Otherwise, its just hearsay.

  6. Thomas and Mark are going to UND no matter who the coach is. They will both be heading to UND on the last weekend of the month when they will both be playing in the NDSCS alumni game in Wahpeton. They will then travel together to UND, where Mark can visit the campus in person. They are coming to UND no matter what, unless the new coach doesn't want them.

At first glance, this is very disappointing but I suppose it could work to our advantage in that a new coach may have the ability to bring in a couple of talented players with him. If all five of our open scholarships are not taken now, that would give him the flexibility to do so.

  7. I"m not here to defend Harry, because I have seen him play many times and think he will help out in certain areas, but I do want to make a comment about Kentucky Wess. they are just a former shadow of theirself since being hit with probation. They would take just about anyone who could play right now. The days of KYW dominating D2 hoops is over and will never happen again. They managed to only win 6 or so games last year and the administration won't give them what they need to win again, to scared of the program getting out of hand once again.

I'm not intending to denigrate Boyce at all since I've never seen him play, but considering the relatively high number of Mon-Dak players in the past who haven't lived up to their juco stats once they get to a four-year school, should we be skeptical of the impact he'll have at UND (at least offensively), particularly considering he was only honorable mention all-conference? Or is he being signed more for his defensive abilities?

  8. It could be very possible that his grades have improved enough to not have to go the juco route, but again I would be surprised.

I had heard Mertens was going the juco route also, but it's hard to explain why this would have been in the Herald a couple of weeks ago if he was so sure he was going to a juco:

  9. There are for sure two more offers to Juco players. One UND has a great shot at the other it's more of a long shot, but you never know. As for Mertens I don't think there is any real chance of him heading to UND, I have been told it's junior college all the way and that he is headed to either Lake Region or North Dakota Science.

Are all three offers to jucos/dI transfers?

  10. Oh I forgot to mention, Don't think juco players at Science can make a difference for your program? Ask NDSU what a different ball team they are now that Andre Smith decided to go there. He is like a man playing with a bunch of boys in the post at that level.

I was told he just didn't fit into what they were trying to do offensively, which is really push the ball and that really backfired on them as Ill St was last in the league in shooting, FT%, 3 PT%, everything. He had no character issues though, and that is always good to hear. He also put up solid rebounding numbers at Science, so he should help on the boards, as will Dryburgh.

  11. Well I didn't know it would get out very this quick, but yes Mark and Thomas both verballed to UND. Thomas had lots of D1's pursuing him and is a great young man and Mark is amazing. Not only did Mark lead the NJCAA national tournament in scoring (when NDSCS finished 7th in the country) but also pulled down nine rebounds a game and was named to the all tournament team. I have had two NBA scouts say Mark would have a chance at the league some day with has athletisism. Mark has unbelievable range from the outside and can dunk on it anywhere close to the rim. If he is close to the basket his will try to dunk it bottom line. He has many D1 offers and choose Illinois State because he had a very good visit. There was no problem offensively, he just stuggled on the defensive end.

Like I said earlier, don't count out Glass yet, he is still after two more players that would also make an immidiate impact.

I believe Kruse was a pretty sought-after prospect a year ago. Any idea why things didn't work out for him at Illinois State?

  12. Don't can't our Glass just yet, I'm hearing of some nice recruits who are seriously considering UND. A division I transfer and some immidiate Juco help. If these recruits come and UND can stay healthy should be a pretty big turn around in my opinion.

Please feel free to contact Gary Waters. He will be available once we get knocked out of the NIT. After making $5000,000 a year the last five years, he was asked to resign and has been given a $1,000,000 going away gift. In the past five years, Rutgers did not make the NCAA's, had a 5-35 road record, and our coach did not establish any relationships with coaches at the top New Jersey high school teams. In college, you have to be able to recruit very good players and you have to have good relationshships with high school coaches.
  13. Current coach of NDSCS Craig Irwin will get an interview for sure. He finished 7th in the country last year going 28-7 and has averaged 28 wins a year for his six years at NDSCS and has had them ranked every year. He is what is keeping NDSU in talent and the UND coaches seem to follow him around recruiting many of his players, like 6'10 Tom Dryburgh from Fordville. He also had two very successful seasons at MSU-Bottineau and is roebucks

    ' nephew.

This is my first BB thread and though I respect what Glas has accomplished it appears it may be time to move on.

Plus I love this type of speculation and c'mon, you gotta have some what-might-have-beens when you see what Mac is doing at UNI.
